Copying save files
I started playing a game (Rhem 4) on pc last year, but I want to play it on a different computer.
I had the game installed on the 2nd pc (laptop), which had a few saves from someone else on it. I deleted these saves (in-game), and uninstalled the game. Then I copied the entire Rhem 4 folder in the Program Files(x86) folder, from the first pc onto the second.
However, when I click on the game it is just recognising the original incarnation of it (still had the few saves until I deleted).
I can load the game up from the portable hard drive that i copied the game over from, and then I can load up the .dxr save files, but they are temperamental. If I could somehow save the game onto the C drive and not onto the E drive version, that might work, but that's not possible in-game, and when I copy the .dxr files onto the C drive, all it does is open up the original game again. I feel like the laptop needs to be completely clear of any trace of the original game that was on there, but other than uninstalling the game (which visibly removes the files), I don't know what else I can do.
I can display all the files in that would help.
Cheers.

Re: Copying save files
Could you do a fresh re-install of the game onto the second PC and then copy just the save files across?
Sounds a bit like the first uninstall wasn't totally clean and there's maybe some old registry entries or something confusing the version you've copied over.
Edit: Another thought: if the re-install won't 'see' the copied files you could try playing the game for 5 minutes, save your progress then exit out and copy one of your old saves over the save the game just made. (i.e. delete the new file and rename the old file with the new file's name.) Bit of a long-shot but who knows.

Re: Copying save files
I did a cache clean to try and wipe out any residual leftovers, but it still remembers somehow.
If I copy the files to desktop instead of the Program Files(x86) folder, I can load up a save file that has been brought over, but strange thing is, it loads up in the location you saved in, but even though this is a later location in the game, it doesn't load up any of the items that I'd collected, nor does it have any of the 'settings' that I had to set for solving the puzzles throughout the game. So it's just loading the location data and nothing else by the looks of it.
The game disc is also being a berk and won't do anything when i click on the .exe. install.
If I can get it to re-install, I will try your idea with the save file copying over.
If that doesn't work, looks like I'd have to either restart the game, or load up the save but then have to go back and collect items and things (which is basically the same as replaying).
Thanks for the help!

Re: Copying save files
No I hadn't seen that - I left it for a good while and you're right, it does load up.
Unfortunately, it still remembers the old information. I even deleted all of the 17 save space files (which did get rid of the memory of the old one) but when I copied my saves that I wanted, it went back to loading the old stuff.
I'll tinker a bit more, but looks like it won't cooperate.
Thanks, Tim.

Re: Copying save files
Something from the old files must still be knocking around somewhere then.
Somewhere like
C:\USERS\log_in_name\APPDATA\ROAMING\ ... RHEMIV ... ? \DPOT
C:\USERS\log_in_name\APPDATA\LOCAL\ ... RHEMIV ... ? \DPOT
C:\USERS\log_in_name\APPDATA\LOCAL\VIRTUALSTORE\PROGRAM FILES (X86)\ ... RHEMIV ... ? \DATA\DPOT
Or something similar. You might need to turn hidden files visible for a moment to look in AppData.
Or maybe you could do a search on C: looking for DPOT folders or *.dxr or something?

Re: Copying save files
Earlier on I did do a search for .dxr files and it came up with three of them in the USERS (just like the first one you listed), but when I went to the location, I got as far as the login name and then there was no AppData folder, which puzzled me.
I didn't know about files being hidden though. I will have to try making them visible and see how that goes.

Re: Copying save files
If you put:
windows explorer show hidden files folders windows 8
(or whatever OS you're using) into Google it should tell you what to do.
This is a puzzle though, from what I could tell from a quick Google search you should be able to just drop your saves into the main save game folder and that's it... Edit2: Not quite as easy as that.
Edit: might also be worth taking a look in AppData on the PC you got your old saves from. If Rhem4 splits the save data for some reason then you'll need to copy across both sets of files. If that doesn't do anything then you could repeat copying the entire game folder over, only this time copy across the hidden AppData Rhem4 folder as well.

Re: Copying save files
Good idea.
So I got the hidden files up and deleted them, then copied the AppData files from the first pc over, but alas, still no result. I still just end up in the right location, but with non of my items and non of the puzzles completed.
I will just have to open up the old laptop and clean it out and/or get a new battery, as I don't really want to start the game from scratch.

Re: Copying save files
Just wondering: is the DPOT folder full of text files (like 1a.txt, 1b.txt, pref.txt) and are you copying over those as well?
DXR files are supposed to be some sort of interactive animation media so they might be the game itself in some way, with your location in the game referenced (by saying which DXR file you're currently 'in') inside the b.txt files. Then your items and puzzles solved might be inside the b.txt file. And possibly settings might be in the pref.txt file.

Re: Copying save files
Iirc, there was just one text file in the DPOT folder.
As for the files copied over, I copied the entire Rhem 4 folder, so it included everything in the game.
I only indentified the .dxr files as the save files because there was the right amount corresponding to the save spaces, and when I deleted them and tried to load up the 'autosave' it asked for specific .dxr files.
When I added just the one dxr that it asked for, it loaded up, but if I then moved to different locations, it would then ask for a different dxr file, so it does seem like the files link to locations or something (it loads up in the same spot I saved as well). I have no idea where it is storing the data for the items collected and puzzles solved though. The loads always act as though it is the start of the game, with the exception of the location.

Re: Copying save files
Based on what you've been saying I'd have expected there to be some txt files in the AppData DPOT folder. It sounds a little like it's getting the DXR from Program Files(x86) and the txt file from AppData.
Still, if you've copied over both Rhem4 folders, the Program Files(x86) and the AppData one and it still doesn't work then I don't know where to go from here...

Re: Copying save files
Nope, me neither.
Never mind, it's a good excuse to sort out my old laptop I suppose!
Thanks for all the advice you gave - can't say we didn't give it a fair bash.

Re: Copying save files
Okay actually I have one more idea, if you fancy taking another shot at it.
If you do file searches for:
autosave_b.txt
1b.txt
pref.txt
Does that bring up anything that looks Rhem4 related? Specifically anything outside of those two directories you've already copied over? If you can, doing the search on both PCs and comparing the results might also be useful, especially making sure any locations on the two PCs match up properly. It's possible your two PCs might be using different locations in AppData or something.
I ask because I found what is supposed to be a Rhem4 save game online and it contains lots of text files. First few lines look like this:
You have the DXR reference there and presumably the rest of that stuff is items and puzzles. Gotta be somewhere on your PC, right...?

Re: Copying save files
It worked!
You know what though, my bad, because earlier you mentioned looking in these locations:
C:\USERS\log_in_name\APPDATA\ROAMING\ ... RHEMIV ... ? \DPOT
C:\USERS\log_in_name\APPDATA\LOCAL\ ... RHEMIV ... ? \DPOT
C:\USERS\log_in_name\APPDATA\LOCAL\VIRTUALSTORE\PROGRAM FILES (X86)\ ... RHEMIV ... ? \DATA\DPOT
I realise I overlooked checking the Virtualstore folder, and also got too caught up in searching for .dxr files at the time.
And all the text files (that looked just like you posted) were all in there. So apologies for dragging the problem out longer than it needed to (and almost leaving it when the answer was right there).
Thanks so much - now the game can be played on a laptop that doesn't feel like it's going to burst into flames.

Re: Copying save files
So if you copy across all the txt files and the dxr files from your old PC to the new PC that should do it.
Hopefully we have not broken the current install of Rhem 4 with all of this folder copying! Give it a go. If the new Rhem 4 turns out to be a bit glitchy then I think a quick bit of re-installing and surgical file copying will sort it out. Still, cross that bridge when (if) we come to it.

Re: Copying save files
Yep, I already copied it all over and checked it before I gave the news. Seemed to be working just fine. I've not looked over the whole map, but from a quick walk about, everything looks ok and is functioning as it was.
