Working with and for Google, now that's exciting. I'm an honors student myself, majoring in Accounting. It has gotten to the point where getting lost in paperwork is a hobby to me now.

I am going to take an opportunity and be a little ignorant: what does an upper divison Accounting major study?
Like I legitimately am not aware.

An upper division of Accounting, you mean the honors? Those 'major' related classes are the same, but general classes we take earlier in our college life are the altered classes. Like English, etc.

The Accounting classes are the same as anyone would take at the college.

Yeah I just don't know what constitutes an accounting class.
For example, higher level CS courses cover topics such as Operating Systems, Programming Languages, Networks, Compilers, etc. etc.

Ah! Forgive me, I must have misunderstood your question. We learn everything from accrual accounting to cash accounting, reconciliations, systems both periodic and perpetual, how to prepare and present all manner of financial statements for both small companies and large organizations, preform cost accounting equations, and more. It really is incredibly deep.

Kind of what I expected. Are you enjoying it?

And forgive me for being a little unresponsive for the next 30-40 minutes, I need to drive to Home Depot and get some new lights for my room.

Aye, been doing it for a while now. It can make me a wee frustrated at times, but it's a labor of love. I'm probably heading off for the night myself in a few minutes, so I'll talk to you later. Have a good one.

Aw man, an internship at Google is the dream at my university ("Cali or Bust" is a popular mantra), at least in the CS-related co-op programs that make up a stereotype-worthy portion of our population. (I'm in Computer Engineering rather than CS, but that still means I'm shooting for software jobs). Do you know so far what projects in particular you'll be working on?

What university do you go to? Is it in the US?

I'll be on a team which I admittedly don't know much about. Like what I've been doing at Amazon, I'll be working on a Google internal platform (which services other teams in Google, not customer facing) which has a Java service as its major component. The project itself is actually confidential, and I won't actually know it in detail until I get there, but I know the team owns a website with a Dart front-end and some sort of Java backend (which is the service IIRC).

Service architecture is more or less my jam, I live it up. For some odd reason, I feel too at home in a Spring application and I love to think about the intricacies between the relationships between the service and its clients. How does your API look? What kind of speeds do your guarantee your customer? What changes can you make to improve those speeds? And so on and so forth.

Anyone in CS can work towards an internship at a Big N company. If you're curious, I can talk at length about it.

I'm at Waterloo in Canada. We have a co-op system where (for certain programs, including all Engineering and CS-related stuff) you go from school to co-op every four months in alternating terms, and there's an official job board that receives postings from all kinds of companies, big and small. So lots of students every term actually do end up working at Google, not to mention Microsoft, Facebook and other big names! (I applied to a couple this term, including Google, but I wasn't really expecting to get anything back, haha. They get hundreds of applicants, and usually only have a few dozen spots if that. Maybe in a couple years towards the end of my degree... though I'm quite happy working at smaller places, which has been the story so far.)

If you want to, I'd definitely be interested in hearing how you got your internship there, and/or how you got your previous job at Amazon. Did you have anything extra or special in your application, or a contact beforehand? What sort of prior experience did you need?

I think I kind of cheated. I go to school at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo for CS; I was initially CPE but switched to CS.

My first year I applied for some 1st-year programs but didn't hear back, so I spent the summer at home. My second year I was enrolled in a Data Structures class and had something of an oddball professor. They couldn't teach but were easily impressed by things which looked good, and by chance I was good at doing that. On the first lab assignment (first week of school) he sees that I commented my code which looked the same as my friend's next to me, and asked me point blank: "Would you like a job at Amazon?"

So it turns out that Amazon has a small software development office downtown in San Luis Obispo (which is not a big town at all) and knew at senior software developer working there at the same time. He forwarded my resume to that engineer who recommended me for a Junior Dev position and I went through 6 interviews to get it (2 on the phone, 4 in person onsite). Since I got I've been working, part time during the school year and full time during the summer. I learned later after I started that Amazon in town just really looks at Java knowledge, and interviews a lot after that -- so I probably didn't need the rec to get in there.

So when it came to working on my resume I kind of cheated by getting it padded so much. It's been a good place, but I applied to Google when the app opened this last September and they got back to me a month or two later. A month or so after that, I had two phone interviews, was accepted, and then they took ~10 weeks to find me a host inside Google. I'll be leaving Amazon come June, but I'll regret it a bit.

For the interviews, I studied a bit into logic, data structures, and some other programming problems. It's stressful but not something you can't prepare for.

My avatars are either usually ironic political leaders or anime girls. I think an Ace Attorney villain was it once, and I actually think that I may have used Sephiroth as my first.

Leroy, why does that seem just as befitting to who you are? Pointing at [&@%!] and making [&@%!] cool?

Pointing at [&@%!] and making it cool would actually be a great super power but only for vanity. You own the market at that point and shallow humans will follow you. I'm pretty vain as it is so maybe that's why it's befitting.

In other news it's eggs over easy and sausage time.
