What is Farengar Secret-Fire's problem?

Post by Daemos Avetorii »

I've always wondered why this guy has such a chip on his shoulder. Why he is so disrespectful to... Well basically, non magic users.
Why is he that arrogant and haughty? Did something happen to him? I find it rather infuriating. I agreed to deliver Frost Salts to Arcadia, and he said something about that task of the menial nature it was was more suited for me. I doubt there is a DB quest in the game that has you kill this miserable jerk. :P But that would be nice.
So, bluntly put. What is his issue? O.o

"Disdainful mage" is a common stereotype, it's not like he's the only one. Poor social skills + immense learning + magic powers = serious superiority complex. Being trapped in a castle full of Nord warriors during an age of unprecedented magical ignorance is only gonna exacerbate that. Or maybe Farengar is just an [&@%!], who knows.

That sounds at least credible to believe. Ty for your input.

Farengar is an intellectual who's been forced to do work in the service of people who can't even come close to understanding his craft. That really gets under peoples' skin. There's a reason why if you know exceptionally intelligent people in real life they tend to try to chum it with other exceptionally intelligent people; it's because otherwise everything would be boring. This is a guy who's probably been studying magic for his entire life, he's chosen his field, he loves his work, and his boss quite frankly has no idea what he's doing here or why.

Then This Guy show up, someone who's just gifted with magical powers without the struggle and toil that it took to get to your level, and that just [&@%!] you off even more. This Guy carries news of a dragon on its way. Finally a chance to use the magic you've been studying all of your life! Finally your pet project has been validated! You get to see a dragon up close! You'll never have this chance again! And your boss tells you to stay in the castle while the Dragonborn sorts it out. You hate this guy. Who does he think he is, stomping in on your territory and getting all of the good work? You hate your job. Why did you get stuck in this position? This is so not worthy of your talents, the years of study. Your mind is being wasted, and you can feel it withering away with every stupid question or odd job that comes by.

Wow, I almost feel bad for killing him now.

There's plenty of people in the game who are made to try to [&@%!] you off. You can either ignore their petty disrespect of your position as Dragonborn, or you can smash their idiot heads in with a hammer. Either way, they're just another stick in the mud.

Except for the essential ones, in which case...dammit, dammit, dammit, dammit, dammit...
Big raims, big taims.

A boy who Listened to someone who could quite possibly be the Night Mother goes and assures you that nobody would miss him, should you ever be in need of getting a certain key to a certain door.

Close enough.
Baurus: Our job is to get the Emperor out of situations like this. Though I'll admit, things aren't going exactly to plan.

Casandra: At the moment, the deadliest weapon at my disposal is a goblin's head on a stick. I'd be worried if this was the plan.

I recently did that quest. It is Mephala who speaks through the door. :)

Basically, Nords don't like mages as a result of the Oblivion Crisis being caused by mages and the Great War involving an entire alliance of magic users based in the most magically advanced province. As far as they are concerned, magic is for cowards and hypcritically, they will use enchanted weapons. It's not surprising Farengar has a chip on his shoulder. His entire skillset is looked down upon apart from the College of Winterhold and Winterhold being a glorified ruin doesn't do mages of Skyrim a favour. The Dragonborn, either he doesn't really care for Akatosh and views himself as a better mage then someone with the soul of a dragon or he has taken the "Oh, screw you." approach to everyone.

That and he isn't entirely smart. I mean, the dude does the one thing most Nords won't do without an axe, sword, maul, swords, greataxe, spear, fists, beard, mead, meadshapedaxe, axes coveed in mead and takes a blood sample from a er... rather questionable place of a certain dragon. I hate to think what would have happened if it was Alduin that was in that situation.

Most of the NPCs using the Male Even-Toned Accented voice are [censored]-nozzles.
