Re: General Discussion
I could join the other Irish Hip Hop greats such as:
-
-
-
I'm drawing a blank, I can't think of a single Irish hip hop artist. I like plenty of hip hop and it's hardly unpopular in Ireland but I can't think of any of Irish origin.
Oh wait, I just remembered terrible Hip Hop people in my Secondary School made.

Also, my own Hip Hop alias: DJ Know-it-all.
Though in reality, Hip Hop is probably one of those kinds of music that I really enjoy but totally unable to make.

I actually get disoriented and slightly anxious when I'm in a place with no visible mountains. Symptom of growing up next to the Colorado Rockies I guess.leroybrown wrote:Also we have no mountains. This may sound silly but to me this is somewhat annoying. The first time I saw a (what I consider to be) legit mountain was in Germany and it had a waterfall which made it even more unbelievable. Seriously, come to FL, it's literally completely flat as far as the eye can see. It's really weird for me to see otherwise.

Re: General Discussion
I remember the first and only time I went to Florida. It's burned into my memory because it was so surreal. We arrived right after a hurricane had hit, and we got on a shuttle to go to Disney World, and I couldn't help but notice that all along the highway there were destroyed houses, debris everywhere, highway signs ripped out of the earth, mass destruction. Then we got to Disney World and everything was pristine. It was almost like we'd crossed into some kind of No Hurricanes zone. The janitorial services there must be working super hard.
Florida got hit by another, more minor, hurricane while we were there. I watched it briefly from the hotel room. It's kind of strange being a pane of glass away from torrential winds and downpour and not being able to feel or hear it. Just goes to show that humans are stubborn enough to adapt to any conditions.

Re: General Discussion
When I went to Florida as a kid, it was in the middle of winter, so cold that they were closing schools here (windchill of at least -30F/-34.4C). The morning we left, my sister accidentally spilled some coffee on my dad's suitcase and my mom quick pulled a Kleenex out of her pocket to wipe it off but it was already frozen in less than five seconds. 'Course, they had a cold front while we were there, so it was maybe in the low 60s: we still thought it was nice considering the temperatures we came from, but we had to laugh at how the weatherman on tv said, in total seriousness, "Brace yourselves, folks, we may have frost tonight."

I used to think it was cute when southerners started talking about how cold it was, but I know how you guys feel now that we've had Californians laughing at us for complaining about that earthquake a couple of years back.

Re: General Discussion
I have a strange desire to visit one place in the future: Bulgaria. According to what I read in Arms and The Man, it is a very beautiful place. I might get some inspiration to write my book and the description of a mountain.

Re: General Discussion
Are you [&@%!] still talking about FL?! (I'm totally digging the delusional feeling of being the resident authority and the attention that comes with it)
If you were to add up the hours of how long FL had freezing temps every winter it would be about 1-5 hrs total (extremely conservative estimate), for the entire winter. On our cold nights the temps will dip to just about freezing for like 30min or so but that is somewhat rare. And when they mention the frost it's generally for gardeners like me to protect the plants.
I'm this way if there's not a beach nearby. I know the cardinal directions w/o thinking on it but if I'm away from the beach I generally need a few seconds to make an estimate.VirtualWeasel wrote:I actually get disoriented and slightly anxious when I'm in a place with no visible mountains. Our definition of 'torrential winds and downpour' are vastly different. Also FL could be nuked multiple times on a monday and Disney would be open on a tuesday. We're gonna get your money dammit!Crawldragon wrote:I remember the first and only time I went to Florida. It's burned into my memory because it was so surreal. ...yeah that's totally true. What water is to the wicked witch of the west (or those aliens from signs) is what cold weather is to us. By cold weather I mean any weather that doesn't produce mirages.Alarra wrote:When I went to Florida as a kid, it was in the middle of winter, so cold that they were closing schools here (windchill of at least -30F/-34.4C). Whereas in England err....
I think this is my que to back out of the topic due to what we define as cold being nowhere near what Florida, WI and Alaska defines as cold. And Bears. We don't have bears. Alaska does.

My family goes down to Florida every year. We've got a condo on Gasparilla Island, which is really quite lovely. Beautiful beaches. Though we did happen to go down one year during lovebug season. And as someone who does not particularly enjoy bugs, I can say that it was absolutely awful. They were everywhere.
