Crash City, Population: Me

Post by Tingz0r »

Oblivion: Steam Digital Deluxe Edition
Windows 7 64-bit

If there's an obvious, well-known way to get this game to run without crashing that I'm too stupid to find, please share it. Otherwise, see below for a list of everything I've tried...that I remember.
Hidden:
Lowering the graphical settings
Disabling all unofficial mods
Using the unofficial patches
Applying the 4GB RAM patch
Using Operation Optimization
Running as administrator in Windows XP compatibility mode
Stroking my facial hair
Disabling autosave
Deleting everything and reinstalling the game
Big raims, big taims.

Did you try deleting the .ini file? Are you using the same save each time or does it crash even on a clean save?

Guess it's too late to recommend an upgrade to 10, unless you wanna be sneaky. I've found it runs Oblivion better than even Vista.

I deleted the .ini file in my documents. I've tried with multiple new saves. Most of the crashes occur during cell transitions, especially outdoors.

I downloaded my free copy of Windows 10 to a disc, and I'm not going to put it on my current hard drive. I'm not going to use it until new and amazing games start coming out that require it, if that ever happens.

Have you tried turning off the music?

For some odd reason, having the music playing would cause Oblivion to freeze up after a few minutes on my XBox 360s. You might be asking yourself "How can that possibly apply here?"

I asked myself that same question when I encountered this very same problem across two or three different XBoxes and two different editions of the game. Change the console hardware: same problem. Install the Game of the Year version instead of the Collector's Edition? Same problem. Version 1.0 to the last official patch? Still there! In each and every case, turning the music off kept the game from crashing. I dunno why, as this defied sensibility.
Baurus: Our job is to get the Emperor out of situations like this. Though I'll admit, things aren't going exactly to plan.

Casandra: At the moment, the deadliest weapon at my disposal is a goblin's head on a stick. I'd be worried if this was the plan.

This is actually working so far. Thank you. I'm only crashing on exit, now.

I'm so glad I originally played this on PS3. I honestly don't think I would have gotten into TES if I tried playing it on PC first, not with all these stability issues and stupid stuff like accidentally clicking outside the window in full screen mode, the terrible lockpicking controls, sluggish menu navigation, and no real gamepad support. Mod support is the only thing saving the PC version.

Now it's crashing when I spend too much time outside or when I get too close to an Oblivion gate and the weather changes.

I just want to play the game...

I'm running Windows 10 and it crashes frequently on it.

I have the game (GOTY Steam version), all the Unofficial Patches, a couple of big texture packs (QTP3 Redimized 1.3 & Bomret's for SI), HGEC with some other texture mods for the character (Vaniila Eyes Addon, Luchaires HGEC Body Seem Reducer, Natural Faces) and DarNified UI installed.
I'm also using OBSE (and several OBSE plugins), Wrye Bash (for the Bash Patch), TES4Edit and TES4LODGen.
Most anything else, especially if the mod had an esp would cause frequent (anywhere from at launch to 10-15 minutes into the game) crashes and the "Oblivion has stopped working ..." message to appear.

(I'd list my LO but I got so frustrated yesterday (after several weeks of trying get it working) I gave up on it and deleted all the Oblivion game, Bash and NMM files.)

I tried reinstalling, running in compatibility mode, "coc center" for 72 hours to allow all scripts to run out, no auto saving anytime.
I made sure achieve invalidation is running.
While stroking my facial hair is comforting, sadly it didn't help.

I've read where it's a problem with the way NMM handles the BSA time-stamps.
That the only way to mod and play is with OBMM.
Or that TesModManager was the way to go.

I used OBMM in the past and had lots of mods in, up and running fine.
Couldn't even get it to launch the game this go round.

Good Luck!
I hope you find the answer(s).

I only use OBMM, but it doesn't even matter because it acts the same with or without mods.

I guess I could try disabling all sound and see what happens.

I tried one last thing.

Installed Oblivion and the add-ons from discs.
Reinstalled OBMM and added a few other things.

Might well be. I've played moderately modded Oblivion dozens of hours on my current Win 7 64 PC, and it has crashed only a few times. I installed it from the disc provided in the Anthology package.

Another one might be hardware, namely GPU. In previous computers I had ATI cards, and if I remember correctly, Oblivion used to crash more (weaker CPU might also have a hand in that, however). Seeing how Skyrim had serious graphical problems with ATI cards (thankfully fixable via mod workaround), it looks like ES games don't like those much. With my current Nvidia card there are no problems. Don't know if Tingz0r has ATI or Nvidia in his PC, though.

I have an AMD Radeon HD 7850, and I'll easily admit it's the most problematic graphics card I've ever used, but I just can't justify spending money on an upgrade right now. It's probably the weakest component to my setup, too, and definitely the first thing I intend to replace when I can.

Other specs:
i5-2500K 3.30GHz CPU
8GB Kingston DDR3 RAM (with room for more)
Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 motherboard
Big raims, big taims.
