Re: A skyrim remaster? Discussion.
The remaster is kinda crap news. I mean, i suppose it's good that people can play Skyrim on the X1 and PS4 but PC? erm.... Does Bethesda forget that most people tend to mod the hell out of their copies and probably have a better looking Skyrim then the remake? Kinda a bit pointless imo.
Regarding Bethesda's style, yeah, it seems to be open world customisation. Not that there's anything wrong with that but it shouldn't be the main feature of a game.
I would have liked an Oblivion remake. If there is any game in the franchise that needs all the help it can get, it is Oblivion. Can not stand the leveling system. Oblivion with mod support or Oblivion using the Creation Engine would be nice.

No mod that can change the game to 64-bit, AFAIK. That alone is probably worth it.

A feature that may entice me to get this on my Xbox One is if it has the voice command support for the Kinect that the 360 did. Otherwise, I'll take my free upgrade on PC and be happy.

Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing how this remaster will pan out. I'm honestly not buying the criticism that this somehow detracted from the development of TESVI. That said, an AU$279.95 for a collector's edition that includes only a statue is just insane, although that seems to be on EB Games rather than Bethesda.

The fact it'll be free for PC users is the tacit acknowledgement that PC users already have what they're trying to sell.

That's... interesting. I wonder if it's official or if EB Games are producing those shrines themselves.OblivionDuruza wrote:That said, an AU$279.95 for a collector's edition that includes only a statue is just insane, although that seems to be on EB Games rather than Bethesda.
Very true, but they could just as easily have neglected to publish it on PC. I'm sure there'd be a lot of rage if PC players were denied the "complete" version of the game, even if it's just a couple shaders.Dark Spark wrote:The fact it'll be free for PC users is the tacit acknowledgement that PC users already have what they're trying to sell.

Would have been nice if Bethesda had released the source code for PC. As it stands now, Beth practically announced a 64-bit patch for PC, and some improved backwards-compatibility for consoles.
I'm just kind of nonplussed by it all.

Re: A skyrim remaster? Discussion.
I think my only real gripe is that, IMO, it would make more sense to release a remaster a bit later in Skyrim's lifespan, a couple of years after the next game is out. That way it'd be like a return to a classic: people who'd played the guts out of VI could take a break and delve into a fresh-faced update of an old friend. And people new to the series with VI could experience V without going back to 2011 graphics. Like, imagine if they'd announced an Oblivion remaster last night. Wouldn't that be awesome?
Start the groove.

Seeing as i don't own Skyrim on PC, it would not be free for me.
But as for the free upgrade? It kinda comes off as a "Yeah, we know. Here it is." thing from Bethesda. Still, if they were going to remaster any TES, should be Oblivion. Although, a complete remake would be better. Morrowind would be nice but Oblivion was kinda erm... very flawed.

Re: A skyrim remaster? Discussion.
I think that remaking in general was stupid, but the easiest one to do is Skyrim, since the engine is new-ish and decent, and it can actually be polished up graphically with little ease. How would you want a remaster of any other TES game? You'd have to update most everything. Lights, shaders, textures, meshes would presumably need a small degree up updating, I'd assume that some of the people wanting complete remakes of older games, at least based on inferences from conversation, want a game comparable to Skyrim, which would require a long time and a lot of manpower, compared to something that already basically already existed as an in-house proof-of-concept for running Creation on the new systems.
Would Bethesda move a lot of copies of a remake of Morrowind? Probably yeah, but it's definitely a lot of work when there are other projects to work on.
I'll hand to Bethesda that the Skyrim: Special Edition does look pretty good, despite my initial disinterest in a remaster. I guess I'll get it, because I only own the PS3 version and wanted the PC version eventually anyway. It does look significantly nicer than the old version, although I'd sink mods into it straight from the get-go and it'll probably end up prettier with someone else's mods

Re: A skyrim remaster? Discussion.
Before anyone goes off on the typical banshee rant about "Why not Oblivion?" we need some context about why this was made. It was developed as a next-gen test to pave the way for Fallout 4, since Skyrim's engine and Fallout 4's engine are essentially the same. It was basically a homework assignment that's getting a slick coat of paint and a release date. It made more sense for them to remaster this than a ten year old game on an older build of the engine, for what they were trying to do
Monsters are bred in labyrinths, labyrinths are bred from walls. There is a reason the Giants choose to remain nomadic rather than follow their shield kin the Nords in building permanent settlements. The Tower is the beginning of all walls.

Re: A skyrim remaster? Discussion.
Yep. It's literally a copy and paste, change a few bits, increase bits in certain areas job. Still, releasing it on PC is kinda a bad move or would have been if they didn't do the free upgrade. I doubt it will sell well on PC because well, look at the mods. Have heard that many people have gotten graphics that make SKyrim look amazing and graphic mods are often popular.
Still, would have been nice if they had a team redoing Oblivion. That said, i rather have a complete remake of Oblivion due to how flawed it was. Crap dialogue system. Combat is erm... so so, leveling system sucks etc.. But that is why i shall get it on PC when i have a gaming one.
Mods. A bazillion mods. Followed by it summoning Mehrune's Dagon to crap all over my day when that happens but still.

Stop right there, criminal scum! You have been accused of butchering an already butchered meme! That's willful desecration. You can either pay the fine, or be hauled away to the stocks!
I'll admit to not playing Oblivion as much these days, though that's mostly because I've beaten it, and am working on the other games. Right now that's Morrowind, before I go back and try to do the same to Arena and Daggerfall.
Gods, I'm almost not looking forward to either of those.

Re: A skyrim remaster? Discussion.
So I misinterpreted part of the original announcement, and have now learned that the "free if you own all DLC" thing does not apply to consoles. My odds of buying this remaster just took a steep plummet. Not so much because it's not specifically free; I understand that the reasoning behind making it so on PC doesn't apply to consoles. But my reasonable-price range for this, before it was announced, had a maximum of around 30-40 dollars. Skyrim was worth $60 the first time it came out; I'm not willing to pay the same amount now that I've already played through it and then some. I still want the upgrade, though, so I'll be on the lookout for sales, and hope that it somehow drops below $40 at some point.

Re: A skyrim remaster? Discussion.
It will sell reasonably on the consoles as there will be people that sold their copies when they got rid of their PS3/X360 collections. But PC? Can't see it doing too well. It will just be people that want it on PC and don't own it or people that don't know about mods. Can predict it being cheap in 6 months time on consoles. Think it took that long for it to happen last time as well.

Except that the PC version is getting bumped to 64-bit, so the potential is immense for modders to do incredible things with the game that just weren't possible before.Vendetta wrote:This was just released, Just a port for xbox one and ps4.

No sign of any survival mode, but old mods are likely compatible so you'll be able to play Frostfall or whatever.umber hulk wrote:waiting for confirmation that some version of Survival Mode will be included, but looking forward to it either way.

Re: A skyrim remaster? Discussion.
yeah, kind of a shame. F4's survival mode works pretty great, the way it's balanced, and the save system, add the edge I've always wanted, if an equivalent doesn't turn up in the next elder scrolls i'll be bummed, and this just seemed like a good opportunity to test it out, but maybe it's not workable.legoless wrote:No sign of any survival mode, but old mods are likely compatible so you'll be able to play Frostfall or whatever.umber hulk wrote:waiting for confirmation that some version of Survival Mode will be included, but looking forward to it either way.
