Jarl of Falkreath won't talk to me (Hearthfire)

Post by Lavellan »

So I have a pretty fresh character (level 9 or so), and she recently got a letter from a courier to talk to the Jarl of Falkreath. I went there, and I was able to finish up a bandit quest for them (it's a misc one I got from the inn), but he won't talk to me about the letter he gave me. I went and did some favors for the townspeople, hoping that might trigger something, but nothing. I know if you have a lot of fetch misc quests you can't take his quest on, but I have hardly any misc quests - let alone ones of that type (most of them are stuff like speak to the leader of the companions, etc. and there is like a grand total of 10 of them).

I have no idea why the conversation isn't triggering, I've never had this issue before. I really want to be able to buy a house though, so this is really annoying me.

Thought I'd also mention that it's not related to the Dark brotherhood story. Never even joined it or did any quests relating to it, so I know that's not the issue either.

Receiving the letter means that you get to skip the weird radiant quest and go straight to the bandit one, so having conflicting quests isn't your issue.

If you've gotten the reward for killing the bandit chief, then you should have Siddgeir's favour. Falkreath is a notoriously buggy hold though. I'd recommend trying to become thane (which is easy to mess up) and see if that fixes things. You might also seek out the steward in case Siddgeir has already granted you permission to buy. Worst case scenario, you can side with the Stormcloaks and replace him, but it'd probably be easier (and less racist) to just go buy one of the other two Hearthfire plots.

It's not the right bandit chief. I got a quest when I was lower level (before I got the letter) from the innkeeper. I already did Ill Met by Moonlight and I did a few things around the town to help people (Runil, the ashes, etc) so I guess my best bet right now is to chop wood for Hert and hope that triggers the Thane questline... But it probably won't, since I didn't kill the right Chief. Unless it overwrote it and gave it precedence, I guess... But... no idea.

edit;
I sold wood to Hert, picked crops of Mathies, delivered the ashes to Runil, found Runil's journal, completed Ill met by Moonlight, and did some light theft for Dengeir. Right now I'm not exactly sure what else to do :/ Nothing is bring up dialogue either Sidgeir or Nenya. They like me enough, apparently - I can take things around Siddgeir's house - but nothing will bring up dialogue with them. I know it's not Dark Brotherhood or radiant quest related, so... I'm kind of at a loss... Really sucks since I can't just do console commands since I'm on the xbox 360 too... augh. I guess at this rate I'll have to loose atleast 10 hours of progress, if not more.

What do you mean it wasn't the right bandit chief? That sounds like Siddgeir's quest is the problem.

iirc if you have any 'Kill the Bandit' quest still in your quest list then it may block picking that new one up.

As a matter of interest if you make the 'Talk to the Jarl' quest active does it actually point you to the Jarl or somewhere else?
Apathy is on the rise, but no-one cares.

Because it was a bandit chief assigned to me by Valga, the innkeeper, not Sidgeir. It was a radiant 'bounty' quest, not the one that he gives you to earn his favor.

Seems like it's an issue that he can't actually assign me to any bandit camps - I guess I cleared all of the bandit areas he'll assign the quest to, so since there is no where for me to fix, he can't give me a quest. This goes back to pretty much the beginning of this character save file... I don't know if I want to wait 30 days for everything to reset or not. :/ I can always do other things in the game, but I don't know exactly how long it'll take for a month to pass by in-game.

Only 12 minutes of waiting.

A really grueling 12 minutes, lol. I just did it since I wanted to make sure my game file wasn't somehow 'broken'; I went back to my old save file since I really didn't want something like that logged onto the stats, lol. Really lame you can't trigger the quest and automatically have a random bandit area respawn, though - I guess it might be jarring if you just cleaned that place out and it was that particular one, but who knows, maybe that bandit camp had some people out and about for supplies or something. :S

I really just need a safe place to store all of my crap so I'll probably just to the Morthal one and get that plot of land and eventually go back to Falkreath. Wish I had my console already, then I could just force a reset. P:

Anyways I appreciate the help. :)

Jarl of Falkreath won't talk to me
Have you tried sending him a voicemail saying you're sorry? I find that tends to work

*Sorry, could not resist XD But ya, either of the two other plots of lands ought to do ya better, what with less bugs and regular flow of unwanted visitors at your doorstep :wat: Good luck with building the house!

Did you try talking to the stewardess, anyway?
