looking for a book

Hi!
I'm looking the name of a book of a story of somebody who was learning from a master. He was a great sneaking thief. his master wanted to steal something from a witch, as a final lesson. he says he wanted to cause a distraction so that could be done. so he created a plan where his apprentice had to be in a specific time and place to do it. he needed to climb up a tree and wait for the witch and her acolytes to come to perform a ritual around it. I can't remember what was the role of the master in that plan. but the apprentice reach his hand to the witch to steal it from her, but was caught. He saw how the master was stealing that object, so he realize the distraction was himself.

May I ask what significance this book holds?

yes, of course. It is for a narrative class i'm taking (i'm studying to be a librarian). I have to tape myself telling a story and i thought why not some story from a book of Skyrim. I like a lot of them, but i choose this one. I think i nailed it ;-D
