giving Followers/Allies equipment...

I'm sure this information is around here, but my searches don't quite turn up what I'm looking for.

is there a way to give gear to your followers? I saw something about forcing them to equip a more powerful weapon than the one they have ...but how do you give them one to begin with?

And can you actually get them to wear armor?

Sorry, I did search for this stuff, but didn't find anything.

I have never known or heard of a way to do this for Xbox360, but perhaps someone has modded it for the PC version?
