Did anyone else find Alduin easy?

Post by Cassandra »

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone else found Alduin really easy to beat. I was expecting a super challenging boss fight and stocked up accordingly, but in the end I didn't use a single health potion and the battle only lasted about 2 minutes.

I'm just curious if anyone else found this.

btw, I was playing a sneaky archer-type class on normal difficulty.

I honestly don't remember, but I had done a ton of side quests and guild quests already. But wouldn't Alduin level with me?

Yes, but leveling can only do so much. Alduin starts with a base of about 2200 health and to double that you would have to be level approximately level 170, while in the same time span your health would increase by possibly 170 times not to mention getting better equipment, etc,.

But yeah, he's kind of a pushover, especially for higher level players.

I find that if you do absolutely little to no side-questing, and only do the main questline on the first two difficulties (Novice and Apprentice) he is a rather easy kill. Adept and above, he gets a bit trickier and requires more skill.

He wasn't super easy, but he definitely wasn't a lady.
Monsters are bred in labyrinths, labyrinths are bred from walls. There is a reason the Giants choose to remain nomadic rather than follow their shield kin the Nords in building permanent settlements. The Tower is the beginning of all walls.

I made a mod that made Alduin uber powerful and overpowered. I never really rebalanced the mod, so Alduin was insane. To give you and idea of just how powerful he became, he did 20x the damage on basically all his attacks and had over 32,000 health. This among other things. Even with god mode, high stats, improved Sovngarde heroes, and toning him down a bit, he still took like 30 minutes of continuous whacking to kill. I also had DCO on as well. I made the mod wanting a dragon god of legend. I succeeded, horribly.

Yeah, Alduin wasn't very difficult. Although I've only played Skyrim on whatever the name for the Normal/Medium setting is. Last time I played Skyrim I killed him in two hits because I was using Mehrunes Razor.

Oh boy, was he ever. That fight had a lot of potential, but he didn't even have any new tricks, and it's made even more humdrum by the fact that you've already beaten him once. Very cool aesthetics, it's awesome being in Sovngarde, but the "World-Eater" shouldn't get easily thrashed (twice) by the first level 23 orc with an elven warhammer that comes along. I've played through a couple times, but the actual fight always seemed really anti-climactic.

They dropped the ball with Alduin. Having it be a 4 on 1 battle with him was a bad idea and i feel that the heroes should have died. Maybe, Alduin eats him after you first kill him. By that, i mean, he lures you into thinking it's an easy fight then throws you back with the mother of all FUS RO DAHs, eats all 3 heroes and the real fight begins with him using all the shouts, having an incredibly high damage threshold, magic barely scratches him and getting close is a high risk, high reward tatic. And that's with him being shouted out of the sky. Without the plot shout, he should literally be invincible in Sovngarde and maybe, over time, the shout starts becoming less useful to the point where he laughs at you.

Bethesda doesn't do end bosses well.

Why would he be difficult? Your character was born to defeat him and put him back in line. The out of place situation would be Alduin being strong.

From the lore anyway - gameplay is a separate issue.

Being born to defeat the world eater just means that they have the tools. Alduin should have been the toughest dragon in existence and not get beaten like a mere normal Dov.

8. IQ: 210.
9. Voice Acting: Christopher Lee.
0. Trademarked in the name of: ProphetDragon.

10. Rename it as: THE MOTHERBLEEPING BLEEP BLEEP YOU, YOU THINK THIS IS DARK SOULS? NO, GOOD, THIS IS THE REAL [&@%!] ALDUIN!
11. Patch in Alduin the controller destroyer, have him kill your dog, your family, your friends if you lose.
12.Get sued.
13. Make an announcement about TES:The musical friends.
14. Regret the Alduin incident and accept fate as turning TES into kiddy games.
15. THEN STRIKE BACK A DECADE LATER WITH A HARDCORE REBOOT! MWAHAHAHAHA!
16. Profit.

You do realise he has a perk that makes him take double damage from the player, right?

Did not realise that but still, anything then "Let's gang up on the world eater" is better. Hell, i know i should stop mentioning it but the Dark/Demon Souls series could teach TES how to handle dragons. Dragons Dogma did a wonderful job with it's dragons. TES did not. :(

I'm going out on a limb to assume TES has lackluster bosses, in general, because it still derives heavily from D&D. Even with an advanced engine and so many improvements to gameplay (admittedly at the cost of depth) it still retains the stigma of a pen-and-paper RPG in a video skin. The story is huge, endlessly branching and robust. The climax? Well, it's there, but since there is so much fluff around it so as to deliberately let it up to the player to not necessarily see it as the conclusion, it just kinda sorta happens and you move on. But this really is the greatest strength of these games and what sets them apart from everything else out there. You never have to face Alduin at all, if you so choose.

That makes sense. I suppose that I'm just used to hard end-game bosses from other games. Dragon Age: Origins, for example. With a poorly planned out mage and an under equipped party, that final boss fight was torture.
I'm not sure if anyone else has played War in the North, but it also had a terrible boss fight. Though it doesn't have any excuses. It was just terrible design.

Spoiler:
But that's not how DnD is played. You set up storylines that have definite ends, so that your imaginary tale feels real. Sure, my world is a living world and I don't railroad my players into a specific questline, but that doesn't mean my campaigns are anti-climactic. The world is still carrying on with its business when they've beaten the BBEG, but when they finish a campaign or a storyline, the climax is climactic. The players and the story we're making deserve it, and by God I'm going to give it to them. I don't know what your DMs did, but I'm sorry that they never let you drive a huge railroad spike of a nail into a storyline's coffin.
An observant fellow higher up in the thread noted this as well, but TES can very much do boss fights. Dagoth Ur is still one of the top boss fights I've gone up against. Then there is Almalexia and Vivec. Hell, Umaril the Unfeathered was pretty good too.

Honestly, I feel like it was rushed to completion. We see this evidenced in other storylines (Civil War, Companions), and I believe even the MQ was nowhere near where TES' magnificent storytellers wanted it to be.

Edited for clarity and grammar.

This is why I'm perfectly happy with them taking as much time with VI as they need. Let us have both an engaging story and boss along with the beautiful scenery.

On the original topic, yes, I found Alduin easier than I was expecting (heck, I had more trouble with some of the random dragon fights, especially the double dragons,) and certainly not as fun as, say, the boss fight of Dawnguard (I still need to do Dragonborn.) At least we got a climactic boss fight this game, unlike in Oblivion.
