Rent a bed dialog is "broken" in my Mod-ed install
I am either turned away from, or literally unable to, purchase any bed for a night. By unable to purchase, I mean that when I click "yes" when they ask if I want to rent a bed, they just ask the question again and again (like "yes" was being mapped to the "rent a bed" dialog). It does not take gold, and none of the beds become legal to me. This problem has happened in Old and New Ebonheart, the Foreign Quarter, Balmora, and a couple other places that I am forgetting off hand. But it's not location specific it seems.
It occurs to me that this might be because I am being hunted by assassins in the night, and somehow the NPCs know about this and do not want to attract the dark brotherhood to their establishment (a completely legitimate concern to be sure). But again, I don't know why the assassins want me dead. The guards started me on a quest to go find out, but I am too low level to take on the dark brotherhood at this point so I am reluctant to embark on that quest yet. But, the broken "yes" option makes me think there is something broken.
I installed Morrowind from Steam (could not find my original discs and didn't mind repurchasing). So I have Bloodmoon and Tribunal, which are also new to me. I would be happy to provide a list of my installed mods and patches, if someone could tell me the easiest way for my to obtain that information (this is my first modded play through, so I might need a little hand-holding). From memory, I installed the MSGO and all associated patches, the less generic NPC mods, Morrowind Alive, and Tamriel Rebuilt. In case there is an important incompatibility here and something had to go, I would be most willing to let go of TR since there is so much to do just on the mainland, and the places I have explored on the other continent have been uninhabited anyway.
More context, if it helps:
------------------------
Recently, I noticed that many inn keepers were telling me that "they don't like me staying there" and to please leave. This strikes me as strange because I am playing a pacifist character who has done nothing to offend anyone. I do not steal, and the worst thing I have done is taunt a couple "commoners" (probably added by Morrowind Alive) without quest relevance into fist-fights so I could train hand-to-hand... I tried to calm them and restore them, but sometimes they would not relent and twice I killed these NPCs, but since they attacked me first (taunted them into it) this happened right in front of guards and no one said a thing.
So, that struck me as strange. Now, I've found places that will offer me a bed, but if I tell them "yes", I want to rent it, it just loops back on them asking me if I want to rent a bed, and they pose me the same yes/no option again. If I click no, they say "come back if you change your mind" and that's that. None of the beds in the inn become legal for me to sleep in.

Less generic NPC has dialogue edits, but might be something else. You can make a little fix yourself too. As for their not liking your staying there, raise your disposition with them. Buff personality, charm, flatter etc. Your race matters too, inkeepers are bigots.

Re: Rent a bed dialog is "broken" in my Mod-ed install
Thanks Marisa! Was the personality buff the "little fix" you had in mind? Something I failed to mention was, I have been grinding speech craft with this character since the beginning. So, at this point (personality ~70, speechcraft ~90), I get people's disposition into the 90's (stubborn ones into the 80's) before I begin any real conversation or trade. These people who reject me have virtually maxed-out positive disposition towards me. So I don't think the problem is sensitive to the NPC disposition. A good idea, though! I'll think about the LGNPC patch, but it doesn't seem like that would, on it's own, account for the "broken" yes option. But of course it might...
[edit] I also tried wearing nicer clothing. I am playing a monk, so I tend to keep him in common clothes/robes. But if I change into expensive clothing, I am still turned away (and the "broken" dialogue persists).

Personality , speechcraft , clothes and race on my install does not make them to turn me away when i played with orc barbarian with 5 speechcraft , 30 personality and first clothes. I am pretty sure that your mods conflict or they install went sideways or your game install gone badly.

Re: Rent a bed dialog is "broken" in my Mod-ed install
Thanks for that. Does anyone have advice for backing up saves and installing fresh from Steam, if that is what it comes down to?
A friend of mine pointed me to Wrye Mash as a tool for getting a birds-eye view of my mod situation and seeing if there were any incompatibilities that could be worked out. However, that didn't seem to want to run on Windows 10... it's an old python app that was written for Python 2.4 with tested compatibility with 2.5, to give a sense of just how old...
Are there more modern, actively maintained tools for managing mods? (Maybe I should start a new thread... or maybe someone can point me to an existing one).
Really appreciating all the feedback!

Re: Rent a bed dialog is "broken" in my Mod-ed install
I was thinking of disposition since certain responses depend on the disposition, and then someone messed up one of them.
But not so glad to see it was not this issue. Applt a hotfix yourself: load up all mods you've got enabled into CS and look up bed dialogue entries for the loop. If it's not there, look up respective scripts.

Re: Rent a bed dialog is "broken" in my Mod-ed install
Unfortunately, since I am running the steam version, I do not have the construction set. If I can find my old discs, then I'll give that a shot, but otherwise I cannot hack anything myself.
Are there any open-source versions of the construction set at this point?

I could possibly upload a copy of the CS to give to you. Just PM me and I'll see what I can do. It doesn't need any discs, at least on my machine.

Re: Rent a bed dialog is "broken" in my Mod-ed install
I am so new to the forum, I do not think I have PM privileges yet. And to be honest, having never used the construction set (at least not in the past 10 years) I don't think that's the route I would like to take right now.
It sounds like I might just have some mis-behaving mods. The mods I am using are so popular that I am sure it's a quirk in the way I installed them, and not an issue with the mods themselves. I'll try a clean install when I have a few hours and report back if the problem clears up (or persists).
I appreciate the offer, KingFeraligatr!

Re: Rent a bed dialog is "broken" in my Mod-ed install
Something has definitely broken the dialogue chain here: the "yes" answer to the question has either been deleted or moved to an invalid location in the chain (possibly below the question). Most likely this was caused by a mod conflict; with (at least) two dialogue-heavy mods (LGNPC and MCA) it's not uncommon for something to get screwed up.pdpain wrote:I've found places that will offer me a bed, but if I tell them "yes", I want to rent it, it just loops back on them asking me if I want to rent a bed, and they pose me the same yes/no option again. My advice would be to start the game with no mods, then add the mods one by one and see if and when the problem re-occurs. Another option would be to cross-check all your mods for conflicts using a utility such as TESPCD (Plug-in Conflict Detector).
Fixing the problem would likely require the use of the Construction Set. The CS doesn't play nicely with the Steam version of the game; apparantly a mod is now available which allows it to do so. It is also possible that changing the mod load order would fix/avoid the issue.
