Right. I haven't played Morrowind but according to my findings in Skyrim, Amalexia, Sotha Sil and Vivec murdered the Chimer king in order to become immortals but got the dissaproval of Azura soon after the deal. She cursed the Chimer and made them the Dunmer. Okay, I got it.
What I don't get, however, is how Azura became a benevolent being in the eyes of the Tribunal. She cursed the Chimer, made them the Dunmer and they praise her instead of tossing her with the likes of Molag Bal and Sheogorath... How and when did this happened? What did I missed? Thanks...

Re: Azura and the Tribunal (Question)
Well actually it's more complex than that. There are many conflicting stories about what happened on Red Mountain, but nobody knows for sure.Red Guardian wrote:Right. I'm pretty sure Azura was worshipped long before that whole thing, so it made more sense for them to assimilate that section of faith by saying Azura was the precursor to Sotha Sil.Red Guardian wrote:What I don't get, however, is how Azura became a benevolent being in the eyes of the Tribunal. Overall I think it was about changing as little as possible; everybody liked the status quo, so why try to change everything?

Re: Azura and the Tribunal (Question)
Keep in mind, the three main Daedra in Dunmeri culture are pinnacles to their believes n way of life <_< Each of them in some factor made them who they are, more so than any other Prince. And even then, much of the Daedra worship has been wilted by the Tribunal Temple despite how entrenched they are to their very belief. Regardless of what story you believe, certain facts remain: Nevar was killed, the Tribunal dared to gain divinity via the heart, Azura cursed all of the Chimer, and as destined her beloved Champion will see to betrayal is met with demise.
Read some of the info relating to events or quests in ESO on the Maulborn, it may shed some light upon the relationship between the Tribunal temple(& the Tribunal in center) and those aligned with the Daedra(even the 'Good'). It's interesting what one of the possible crimes that led to a dunmer son's death

Re: Azura and the Tribunal (Question)
The Tribunal mantled the three Good Daedra in a way. Sotha Sil replaced Azura, but the Temple still paid its respects to Azura for her importance to their Chimer ancestors. Under old Temple doctrine, the Good Daedra were the 'Anticipations', and were simply filling the place of the true gods of the Tribunal until they ascended. After their fall, the New Temple returned to worshipping Azura as a 'Reclamation', re-assuming her original role which had been overtaken by a well-meaning but foolish and egotistical mortal.
You should also bear in mind that the Dunmer concept of 'good' is a little weird. I mean, they view Mephala as a good guy.

Re: Azura and the Tribunal (Question)
Morrowind's dev team had at least one Comparative Religion major on it, and one of the things people like this brought to its world-building was to incorporate real world religious traditions into the game. In this case, assimilation of older/conquered faiths into a new one. When the Tribunal/ALMSIVI inherited the "keys to the kingdom" as it were, and the status of living god-kings, they became overlords of a proud people with a very long religious and social history. So, instead of trying to do away with all the old ways, the Tribunal wisely chose to keep almost all of the Daedric traditions of the Chimer in the new Dunmer Temple. Yes, Azura possibly cursed them, but the Dunmer didn't know that. Sotha Sil, the wise old wizard, spun them a yarn and made them feel proud of their new 'blessing'. Azura was kept as a great Ancestor Spirit - not to appease her or out of a sense of guilt, but because the subjects of ALMSIVI were descended from people who worshiped her. It was a matter of convenience as well as mythic numerology.
Monsters are bred in labyrinths, labyrinths are bred from walls. There is a reason the Giants choose to remain nomadic rather than follow their shield kin the Nords in building permanent settlements. The Tower is the beginning of all walls.

Re: Azura and the Tribunal (Question)
Azura is their chief diety I guess so most religious peiple would pribabaly believe that a deity must not only bless but also punish.
She pribably also played a role in the chimer migration to the morrowind through the proohet veloth. So she coukd be their deliverer.
