At the moment I'd say Fallout: New Vegas is the best introduction to the series but yeah, Fallout 4 may well change that. I'm sure you could just start with Fallout 4. Like, Morrowind is my favorite Elder Scrolls game but I'd recommend people start with Skyrim or Oblivion and not Morrowind.
---
Pre-War America wasn't that great and I wonder how much of that we'll see in the pre-war parts. On the surface things may have looked nice but underneath it was pretty terrible. Horrible authoritarian and corrupt government, invading Canada, resource shortages, Chinese-American Internment, New Plague, etc. I wonder if we'll see any of that in the pre-war parts. The Sole Survivor does seem to living in a pretty nice neighborhood so it's possible that we won't. But you know, if we end up talking to people about life before the war (like I imagine we will) I hope we're able to say that it was hardly a fabled 'golden era'.

I'm worried I'm going to have things spoiled on me, I've been avoiding news about the game but I won't be starting it until a few days after it comes out and even then, I'm not planning on rushing through it. From what I've heard people are already posting spoilers in the internet.

I don't think I mentioned it before, but it's cool how the default male character looks like Albert Cole who was one of the three default characters in Fallout 1. Check it:

Thanks- I was going to ask which one is the best to go for as a starter. Was NV after 3 (release wise)?
I wouldn't start with 4, as I don't have any of the consoles that it's available for and I don't like playing on PC, and it's also too pricey when it first comes out.

New Vegas looks good though -and can get the Ultimate edition for the 360 for £9.99.

And even if the great war didn't happen, chances are, we would still end up with a wasteland. The US had exhausted almost all of it's resources during the America-China war and it would have most likely resulted in a massive civil war. Hell, it may be a good thing that everything got nuked instead of a civil war. At least, there was a chance of survival.

Tis a nice touch regarding Albert Cole(who, is implied to be the canon Vault Dweller) but i really hope this does not mean that Bethesda has looked at past games gone, "hmm, chuck that in for nostalgia" without thinking about what it could do to the lore. Hell, Fallout 3 should not have happened according to the Fallout Bible on account of DC being reduced to well, nothing. I disagree but Bethesda failed to show what DC should have been after being nuked to hell. Kinda mixed about the whole Boston not being nuked thing. Hopefully, Bethesda hasn't turned it into Skyout. Yeah, i'm partially concerned about 4 due to various reasons.

Also, Deathclaws are said to be just as deadly as their 1 and 2 counterparts. Basically, lightning bruisers. Tis a good thing but i really hope the "Oh, by the way, here's this gun that reduces them to jokes" gun is not back as Deathclaws should be the enemies that make you soil yourself. Even if you are armed to the teeth and are a walking tank, they should be your biggest threat.

Probably keep an eye on the Vault to explore everything that is revealed as i'm not too fussed about spoilers for 4. Mainly due to me er.. not being that confident in Bethesda's story telling abilities. Don't get me wrong, they can tell stories but Skyrim's was a bit of a letdown and kinda lazy. The main quest that was.

New Vegas is a spin off, Aarah but it is worth playing. It's far better then Fallout 3 and whilst it is a bit of a sequel to the original games, it's more or less it's own thing. It is fairly buggy and it does crash.

New Vegas and 3 are both fine to play, play either of them first it doesn't really matter. But I'd recommend playing both of them before playing Fallout 1 & 2 (and play Fallout 1 & 2 in that order, 1 & 2 are more closely connected.)

To me calling New Vegas a "spin off" is like calling GTA: San Andreas a spin off. I mean, it's just a sequel that wasn't numbered.

I totally agree with Kerr. The easiest way to get introduced is New Vegas, then FO3, then I'd do tactics.

JUST watched the trailer. I got chills. I'm so freaking excited! This should keep us all busy until TES6 comes out lol.

yah if we do see the skeletons of the dark side of the pre-war era such as the internment camps it'll probably be at the edge or corner of the map or even underground. I thonk you're right aomeone will ask us about the before times and we can answer like when moira brown asked us about life in the Vault

I doubt it as i think Bethesda doesn't want to do that much in the pre-war world and just wanted to reuse the concept from Van Buren. I am interested in seeing what's left of Van Buren has been used in 4. New Vegas used a lot of Van Buren and modified it. Sadly, it seems that Ron Pearlmen is not the narrator. I mean, none of the trailers have had his voice and it is wrong on so many levels. He is part of Fallout just as much as the Vaults are.

For Prewar America, i do hope that we get at least one or two days of interaction before the world goes to hell. Just seen the trailer and er...
Spoiler:
i think it's the Lyon's BOS that's in Boston. Which means, the Jedi of Steel. YAY! :-/ Nothing against the concept of a BOS that takes the codex and shoves it in the trash in order to help the wasteland but considering that 4 takes place mere weeks after 3, it is very questionable to why Lyon would send a large amount of BOS to Boston. I mean, yeah, it's filled with all sorts of tech but with the war with the Eastern Enclave, i'm certain that their main priority would be cleaning up the remains and figuring out what to do with the wasteland next. Should have set it a few years afterwards at least so that we could find out via rumours what the DC wastes have done.
I fail to see why some people are claiming that the graphics are crap. They are not and look amazing. Hopefully, 4 will be just as jam packed with content as New Vegas was(including all the add ons). If not, that is a bad show from Bethesda. I also hope that there is a damn good reason why the Sole Survivor knows how to use Power Armour and that they don't take the Skyrim approach of "oh, ye'r a wizard 'arry" and give you it within the first quest. Yeah, i disliked that Skyrim handed you Dragon Shouts within the first few hours as it did not feel that i unlocked my true potential. Just felt like i was just checking in and going "Hi, i'm the player, can i have my shouts now? Yes? Cool."

Still wish Traits made it in and if all the perks are special based, i bloody hope they have not gotten rid of useful perks from previous games just so that we can have perks that are a bit naff.

Anyway, back to Pre-war america, it was [&@%!]. Spoke out against the government? You're a commie and we will disappear you. What's that? you hate the war? Commie! etc.. Ok, maybe i'm a bit wrong but Pre-war America was pretty much the worse place to be. Then there was Vault Tec who conducted experiments on their populations in the vault apart from a select few which served as control vaults.

Also, i really hope Boston will not be shown as 20 years after the great war like DC was.

Well, the focus of the game is...the Wasteland. But they are giving us a taste of pre-war America, and you don't need several days of exposition to do that. Your house, your family, your neighbours, maybe a newspaper and a TV announcement, that's more than enough to get a good sense of what it's like before the world goes boom.

Spoiler:
...No, it's really not that farfetched that it's a completely separate branch of the BOS, and they can quite easily be traditionalists. The Institute is an organization that has considerable influence over the Commonwealth, and they rule through technology, and force. It's natural that ANY branch of the BOS would be opposed to their rule. "This campaign will be costly...But in the end...We will be saving humankind from from its worst enemy; itself." That sounds very traditional Brotherhood, to me. Mankind can't be trusted with their gadgets and toys, so we're going to save them from themselves by blowing some up, and taking the rest for ourselves. And plus, Lyon's Brotherhood isn't something that should be repeated. Okay, one branch went rogue to achieve noble ends, awesome. But it's the BROTHERHOOD OF STEEL. New Vegas' was spot on. If the Commonwealth Brotherhood has some few quirks, okay, that's fine. But for them to be a carbon copy of Lyons' group, or a part of them...Bethesda won't do that, because that'd be truly horrible writing.
Yeah, I'm getting tired of hearing that its graphics are crap, or worse, that they're "the same as Fallout 3". :P I think this generation of gamers has gone blind from staring too long at their AAA shiny ultra realistic graphics, on their top of the line, steroid-enhanced PCs. Yes, the graphics aren't quite as good as your mindless shiny shooters, but there are so many reasons for that. This has been in development for years. And the game is broader and deeper than a few samey levels. Huge open worlds can't have *the* best graphics, or your processors would explode and set fire to your house.

...But seriously, "as bad as Fallout 3"? What the hell. I'm glad many people have made side-by-side graphics comparisons, and said "you guys are idiots".

Getting very excited, though. Only a few days! My birthday is on the 9th, but honestly, do you think I give a crap about that? I'm going to be saying "yeah, kay great thanks, can I go to bed now? I want it to be the 10th."

Regarding the BOS
Spoiler:
I can see them being the outcasts if it was set years after 3. It is a bit far fetched that an entire chapter's worth of BOS split from Lyons as i think, they were struggling to keep enough men and women in the field in their fight against the supermutants. I have heard speculation it is the midwestern BOS and it would be surprising due to the semi-canon status of Tatics. However, i doubt they would risk sending men to Boston unless they have managed to conquer the midwest and rival the original BOS in terms of men and firepower. It's good that the BOS are being the BOS instead of Jedis of Steel this time around but if Bethesda turns them into Jedis of Steel that happens to hate the CommonWealth because of it's tech, that will suck. New Vegas got it right. Hopefully, it'll be a bit like the Mojave chapter or the western chapters instead of the eastern.
How the hell did someone think it's the same as Fallout 3? In fact, that is beyond stupid. It's like saying the Witcher 3's graphics are the same as the Witcher or Skyrim is the same as Oblivion. Plus, graphics, graphics never matter in open world RPGs unless the open world RPG is crap. Then it's just shiny crap. As you said, it's been in development for many years and chances are, Bethesda realised that the PS3 and 360 could not handle it thus dumped them in order to get more out of the modified creation engine and just trying to make the best fallout game they can. No doubt, a ton of graphic mods will be made within a month or two.

I think open world games can have the best graphics if everyone doesn't mind 1 or 2 frames per decade followed by your computer going "WHAT DO I DO!?" followed by the machines rising up against us and beating us all up for our bottle caps.

I have no idea when there will be time for me to sleep, eat, WORK, exercise, feed the animals, etc. once this game comes out. And btw, those deathclaws look meaner than in the other games. I can already see myself screaming when getting chased by one (because that's what you do, right? run away and throw grenades at them, right?).

Eating is really the only essential one, and you can eat whilst playing. And you can get someone else to feed the animals.

Nope. You fight them with everything you got then have a lot of accidents when you realise that they were the baby deathclaws. The real ones are behind you and Bethesda used the Cliff Racer logic by having them spawn randomly and in large groups.

yeah that's interesting because it means they could (or not) do something with the shelter app too. at the very least they probably considered access to the mini games and even a quest around them.

Unsurprisingly my phone that couldn't run Fallout Shelter can't run this. But I'm sure I'll get a better phone eventually, when I do they'll be two of the first things I download. Sure it's more of a novelty than a useful thing but it is neat.

That is pretty radical. If using that doesn't pause or halt the game in any way, I'd probably give it a try. That being said, my screen may be a little too small to use it effectively.

Are any of you going to stream at all? I'm not going to get it anytime soon (I have a Vostro and a PS3), but I'm not opposed to watching some Fallout 4.
