My last camera was a cheap Kodak EasyShare CD82 that I got at Walmart at a Black Friday several years ago, and a a couple months ago my dad gave me the Samsung ST72 that he'd gotten free as an anniversary gift from work. In both cases, these are ~$100 cameras, and they don't seem to handle light and color as well as I'd like, no matter what I change the settings to; my ipod takes better pictures aside from it being really low resolution.
What I'm looking for, with a price limit of about $500:
- I don't want to deal with lenses and so forth. I want a nice point-and-shoot that has presets (landscape, sport, fireworks, etc) that you can optionally use; my mom has an Olympus from about 2005 that we really like that does that. (Not sure what model. I'd borrow it for my trip, except that it takes Olympus memory cards, which are a non-standard size and only go up to 2GB, and it records videos in a weird format that seems to have compatibility issues with things.)
- Either SD or SD Micro cards. The card I want to use right now is a 32GB micro SD and I have an SD adapter for it so it can fit into either size.
- The ability to use standard batteries, not specially-sized rechargeable ones. That's one downside to the Samsung from my dad: it has a rectangle-shaped rechargable lithium-ion battery specially made for the camera/brand. That's great for just being around home and maybe using the camera for an hour or two; I can just plug it in and recharge it for a while afterward and not have to keep buying batteries. Not so great for being on vacation, using the camera all day, not being around an outlet to charger it, and needing to put in new batteries NOW.
I don't know much about what's out there, or what to look for in a camera. Any tips on camera-buying, and any brands/models you'd recommend?
