Skyrim crashes on save

I have been playing Skyrim for about 2 years, after almost 4 of playing Oblivion (every quest in every expansion), and have generally had no issues. But for the last month or two (I play on a random schedule) I have had a problem I had not run into before. Every once in a while I would try to do a save (full, quick or auto) and the game would crash. I found some instructions about dealing with (see below) and that worked 2-3 times, but today it just keeps crashing.

I tried running the instructions below a couple of times, going backward through my full saves until I found a place that I hope is safe (and lost 1/2 a quest in doing so), but I am concerned that it might happen again. So, if we think we understand how to fix it do we understand what causes it ? Is there something I can do to reduce the probability of it happening ?

Instructions:
1. Load an older save (as long as it doesn't have CTD on save glitch, then load it)
2. Create a NEW save (through pause menu)
3. Type in player.kill in the console menu, which can be brought up using ~
4. Load your latest save (the one that had CTD glitch)
5. Type in player.kill
6. When it loads back up, Try saving (I usually just use quicksave)

Do you have a lot of save files? Sometimes an excessive quantity of saves can cause problems.

I had about 65, so I deleted about 40, and disabled "save on" anything as well. But when I played it still crashed on Quicksave. So I did some trial and error to find a save that I might be safe with. It means losing about 6 sessions worth of play, but if it doesn't crash it will be worth it. So could the number of items in my inventory be a factor as well ? I never sell anything, so I have a very large inventory.

I'm not sure if having a lot of items in your inventory causes any problems. Could do.
Do you have a lot of items lying around that you have dropped, like in a property you own?
Are you also using any mods?

Don't really have anything lying around, it is all stored in a property. And do have a couple of mods, but most of them have been in place a couple of months. I did go thru some trial and error to find a save that seems to be stable, so I am going to keep track of what I do and see what happens. I might sell off some of my inventory as well.

GOT IT !
It appears that if at some point I die and get revived, any save or load after that point will crash. If I exit and then restart the game is fine. So I guess I just have to die less often.
