Re: Races that ought to be playable (plus suggested abilitie
Lots of historical stuff happened in Shadowfen. The region is steeped in Ayleid and Dunmer history, it had an entire Travels game dedicated to its main city, and the Argonian race was almost ended there by Dominion meddling. Combine it with the highlands we see in Murkmire, coastal regions like Thorn and Lilmoth, and the impenetrable interior jungles, and you've got yourself a pretty reasonable overworld. Black Marsh wouldn't be just 'swamp' any more than Skyrim was just 'snow'.

Re: Races that ought to be playable (plus suggested abilitie
Yeah, but much of Black Marsh is covered in erratic amounts of wetlands that would make a player inclined to just play as the Argonians. Not that playing as Argonians would be a bad idea, but it wouldn't be so fair to the other races, which can drown in water or succumb to various poisons/diseases without enchantments/potions/etc., and really, they should add mainland Morrowind, or at least a part of it, to a game set in Black Marsh in order to even out the playing field a bit. It'd make sense, seeing as the Argonians invaded it shortly after the Red Year, and we don't see much of mainland Morrowind in TES III: Morrowind outside of the cities of Mournhold and Sotha Sil.legoless wrote:Lots of historical stuff happened in Shadowfen. They were saying the same thing about Skyrim--nothing but a bunch of snow and mountains, so why wouldn't you just want to be a Nord?

Exactly. Skyrim is covered in racists, why not just play a Nord? Morrowind is legitimately a more difficult game if you play anything but a Dunmer. It's not a new theme. Besides, why would wetlands be limited to Argonians? Grab a waterbreathing ring and some Resist Disease potions and you're ready to explore the meanest part of the Murkwood.

Political/Racial disputes =/= A natural ability that determines whether or not you can survive in a certain environment where others can't. If they make a game set in Black Marsh, they'll probably have you do a lot of swimming/diving, and a race that can just breathe underwater in a province that's mostly smothered in swamp-water as it is would just take a big chunk out of the difficulty and make the Argonian race seem overpowered.legoless wrote:Exactly. Not even Morrowind and Skyrim made the Dunmer and Nords immune to Fire Damage/Frost Damage respectively. They just made them resistant to it, as in they could still take some damage.
It's like putting a race in Morrowind that can levitate for 1000+ seconds as a Racial Power. Or a race that can just be brought back to life every time it was killed (which I'm sure is why we haven't seen Dremora, Golden Saints, Dark Seducers, etc. be playable in a TES game yet).
Trust me, the only way this would be remotely fair is by Nerfing the Argonian's stats (cutting their immunities to 50%, etc.), incorporating mainland Morrowind (which has volcanic/mountainous terrain, where constant Water Breathing doesn't mean squat) into such a game, or going back to TES III's rule about Argonian's water breathing ability just being a spell you had to cast (which I really wouldn't want to see happen again).

Re: Races that ought to be playable (plus suggested abilitie
From what I've seen of Black Marsh from ESO, it looks more than varied-enough to be a viable setting for the next game. And, what...? Both Oblivion and Skyrim (and certain DLCs for each) had some measure of diving under water for large amounts of time (especially in Oblivion and its "Knights of the Nine" DLC). Did you complain at that point at how "unfair" it was to be an Argonian in those games? Argonians were already "nerfed" in Skyrim by having their resistances reduced to just 50% for disease (fairly useless in comparison to the other resistances).
Sounds to me like you just don't like the idea of Black Marsh and are just making excuses as to why it shouldn't be a viable setting

Re: Races that ought to be playable (plus suggested abilitie
If, for some reason, Bethesda went back on their more recent design choices and brought back underwater combat and exploration for a game set in Black Marsh, and if they decided to lock large amounts of the game content behind said underwater excursions, then they'd offer all characters a way to breath underwater. But they wouldn't do that, because underwater stuff sucks if it's not presented in moderation, and also because Black Marsh really isn't that flooded. It has stagnant pools and sinking ruins, not vast inland oceans and flooded underground passages.
I'm actually pretty into the idea of seeing an independent Fourth Era Argonia. No Dunmer slavers, no Empire, only the trees vs the Dominion. The Hist remember.

I've been partial to the Nords since Morrowind, but I think it'd be a neat change in pace--and probably a great chance for Bethesda to flex their technical muscles--to actually visit Argonia/Black Marsh. I'm already stoked by what I've seen from their other baby that's arriving in November for the current-gen, so I can only imagine how far they'd be able to push the current envelope in a place with wild forests/jungles, exotic life, etc.

Re: Races that ought to be playable (plus suggested abilitie
No, that's not the same thing. There was LOADS to Oblivion that didn't involve swimming or diving, and it was extraordinarily easy to get your hands on a spell, potion, or enchanted item capable of giving you Water Breathing. And that's not going into the permanent enchantment glitch, which can make your character all kinds of over-powered and give the Argonians and their natural water-breathing power a run for their money.House of the Wolf wrote:From what I've seen of Black Marsh from ESO, it looks more than varied-enough to be a viable setting for the next game. Besides, the Argonians in Oblivion are too awesome to hate.
That's not true at all. I'd absolutely LOVE to see a game set in Black Marsh. However, I'd also like to see a game where you actually play on mainland Morrowind, and don't just pop in and out of one of its cities. So why not a game where both Black Marsh AND mainland Morrowind are used as the setting? I mean, they share a border with each other, there'd be a huge variety of terrain between the two (not saying they were lacking variety to begin with, but still), and there's lots of history between the two provinces. All of these would provide countless gameplay opportunities, so why shoot that idea down?House of the Wolf wrote: Sounds to me like you just don't like the idea of Black Marsh and are just making excuses as to why it shouldn't be a viable setting
Anyway, we're getting off-topic. This thread's meant to about playable races, not areas we'd like to visit.

I agree. Same rule goes for the Daedra. I just can't see it being done in the right way.Pilaf The Defiler wrote:Eh, personally I'd hate to see any more Dwemer besides Yagrum appear, or for the Akaviri races to ever be depicted. Some things should remain mysterious.
I wouldn't mind being able to play as a goblin. But I'd say I'm pretty happy with the current races atm.

Re: Races that ought to be playable (plus suggested abilitie
Honestly I started a Dremora character for Skyrim recently (mods ftw) and it's been pretty fun - now whether they should be playable and how that would be incorporated would be another story. Perhaps if/when they die they are returned to Oblivion instead of a standard game-over? I don't know, it sounds cool in theory but in practice it would probably be very lore un-friendly and impractical to implement.
As for the Akaviri races honestly even if we set sail to Akavir in TES VI I don't think that they should be playable (yet), reason being that IF (big if) we're going to Akavir then WE are the aliens visiting a strange and unfamiliar land, it would be weird to start a game as a new race only to be constantly regarded as an "foreigner", "outsider", or "newcomer" by your fellow Akaviri unless of course Bethesda released some in-game books that explained in the years between Oblivion and TES VI that some Akaviri people migrated to Tamriel in small numbers and wound up settling in some places.
Snow Elves should remain unplayable until they get their race fixed or the supposed lost or hiding clans come out. Same goes for the Dwemer except they should never become playable, instead I would rather the new games delve a bit further into the history of their culture, religion, hierarchy, sciences and disappearance.
Maormer, I think out of all of the above mentioned races that it makes the most sense for these guys to finally become playable. I mean Tamriel is a huge place and I sincerely doubt that ZERO Maormer wound up settling among some of the coastlands or seaside states of the continent?
Imga, what give with them? Make them playable already, heck just give them an appearance already same with the Sloads unless we're to believe that N'Gasta was the only Sload in existence.

Re: Races that ought to be playable (plus suggested abilitie
Well Dawnguard set it up for the Falmer to be playable in the next game, but I'd rather the Maormer be playable instead of the Falmer.
While not a race, I have really been wanting to play as a Draugr. Frost and poison resistance, weakness to fire, and their special ability could be Unrelenting Force.

Re: Races that ought to be playable (plus suggested abilitie
I'm lost on all of these lesser-known races (bad memory + lack of research = cluelessness), but I've always thought that it would be cool to have a game that takes place back when the Dwemer were in their golden days. There could be a questline focusing on the struggle between the Dwemer and the Snow Elves, maybe?
But I'm pretty happy the way things are.

Re: Races that ought to be playable (plus suggested abilitie
I'd like to see a game about Yagrum the last Dwemer. He's so badass surviving the disappearance of his race, a lot of wars, Corprus disease; staying alive after meeting Nerevarine, near-destruction of the Vvardenfell and much more. He should get his Dwemer shotgun and crowbar, Dwemer XVL-1456 and the rest and go kick some ass under the magical-radio guidance of his old pal Divayth Fyr who will provide magical support, summoning and recon from his hideout. Because they're outta gum!
Just imagine how badass and old style it would look. Spider-legged last Dwemer with a magical headset on which Divayth instructs him, and a shotgun in his hands running around killing elves, humans, daedra, dragons, liches, giant tentacles and other monsters. Not sure about humans and elves though, most of them are friendly.
And then, after you complete the game once as Yagrum, you'll get to play the same levels from Divayth's point of view, telling Yagrum what to do and providing support.

It's hinted at that other pockets of uncorrupted Snow Elves survive and may soon establish contact to help cure the Betrayed and/or face the threat of their apparent plan to take over the surface world. Depending on the time jump involved for TES6, I wouldn't even be mad if they added playable Falmer.AngryNord wrote:Really, how?Leckan wrote:Well Dawnguard set it up for the Falmer to be playable in the next game,

The time in TES foes on, and the prospect of those living in it becomes much worse.
On a brighter note, I'd like all khajitti moon phase sub-races in new official TES.

I don't recall the term "soon" ever being used.
