Nope!

Hint #1:
Spoiler:
I can't tell you what category (person, thing, etc.) the answer falls under since telling you the whole truth would make the answer painfully obvious.

Nope, nope, and nope.

Getting a bit closer, but even the right answer is only halfway there.

That's hint #2.5, here is hint #3:
Spoiler:
There's another way to look at it, maybe this arrangement will help:

If you need me, I'm close at hand,
A kind killer, but only on land.
What I say is not what I mean,
Nowhere to go, nothing to glean.

The red lines refer to one concept and the blue to another, while the purple could apply to both. HOWEVER! Both concepts are covered by one answer.

This is not the right answer: Ancient Dragonborn.

Just an indication that you clogged this thread :) Better hints needed.

Okay, okay. Here's hint #4, doubly hidden for your protection:
:
Spoiler:
First, hint #3 again:
likelolwhat wrote:There's another way to look at it, maybe this arrangement will help:

What I say is not what I mean,
Nowhere to go, nothing to glean.

The red lines refer to one concept and the blue to another, while the purple could apply to both. HOWEVER! Both concepts are covered by one answer.
Hint #4: Red is an NPC and blue is a class of spell. Purple refers to the fact that the NPC does not move from one relatively small area AND that the spell is not a projectile.

EDIT: The third line refers to a quirk between the name of one spell and its category (the latter is the answer), but it may be too obscure so feel free to ignore it until you are sure you have the answer.

No. The specific spell referred to in line 3 is a Restoration spell, but the 'class' of spell that is also the name of this NPC spans several magical schools. Therefore the one answer referring to both class of spell and NPC.

Nope. The spells and the NPC have nothing to do with each other except for name.

1. If by 'class of spell' you mean Novice - Master levels, then.

Skyrim has two named NPC's featuring those words in their names:
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Arnskar_Ember-Master
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Dawnguard_Novice_Hakar

Other NPC's names feature words: Quartermaster, Thrallmaster, and Dockmaster.

Other random npcs with those words are named according to "Class, Level"
Conjurer/Necromancer/XYZ Mage Novice/Apprentice/etc.

2. Restoration spells with damaging effects (to fill the 'killer' part):
Sun Fire - Apprentice //469ft range doesn't exacly fit "nowhere to go"
Poison Rune - Adept
Stendarr's Aura - Adept
Vampire's Bane - Adept
Bane of the Undead - Master

All of the above fit "What I say is not what I mean," (maybe without Aura).

3. Matching spells and npcs:

-Bane of the Undead - Arnskar-Ember-Master/any local Quartermaster/etc
-<one of the adept spells above> - random Adept Conjurer/Necromancer/etc

4. The only ones from point 3 that aren't intended to move from one area:
- Arnskar - just a blacksmith form Ragged Flagon who has nothing to do with spells.
- Quartermasters living in some military camps.

Both are related to Bane of the Undead - Master level restoration spell. You kinda ruled it out a few posts ago. Quartermasters fit better into the actual riddle.

If that is not an answer, then nothing really is.

Is the answer: Rune(s)?

Musings:
Hidden:

What I say is not what I mean,
Nowhere to go, nothing to glean.
Npc parts of riddle for the Thieves Guild member Rune
'You need' (He asks 'what do you need?')
'Kind' - (He is set at 'no crime' and is 'unaggressive')
'Nothing to glean' - (He doesn't know about his origins)
'Nowhere to go' -(He just hangs around The Cistern mostly)

Spell parts of riddle for the spell Poison Rune
'Close at hand' - (Just a spell or one that you have to cast relatively close to you)
'Killer, only on land' - (It does damage, and runes have to be cast on the ground)
'What I say is not what I mean' - (It's a restoration spell but does damage)
'Nowhere to go' - (You can cast a rune a certain distance, but it's not a projectile)

Yep! Your reasoning is right on point. (I should mention that the DB can't glean anything about Rune's past either, and the 'kind' line was meant to refer to how nice he is to you as compared to several of the other Guildmembers.) Your turn, Aarah!

I liked the hints, llw! They were a riddle in themselves, which made it even more....riddley!

New riddle:

In the kingdom of bones,
where the little people dwell,
You'll be swept off your feet,
find something special as well.

In a fable not disclosed,
You must get up to five,
A dangerous path,
But you'll always stay alive,

Which choice will you make?
I wish no one to know,
You'll be quick on your feet,
If you share with this foe.

Are the little people Rieklings?
To see the world in a grain of sand
And heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour.

Yes they are, because the answer is Black Book: Untold Legends in Benkongerike.
Hidden:
1:1 line meaning:

In Benkongerike (norwegian translation)
where the little lovely rieklings are
there's a tight tunnel leading
to a room where you'll find:

Black Book: Untold Legends
It has 5 chapters (with third being optional)
As you journey through Apocrypha
death only sends you back to Solstheim.

You have 3 reward options: bard, merchant, butler
Hidden knowledge should remain hidden
Each (even if you didn't mean it) choice can make you faster: stamina regen, selling junk-swords, or
forcing poor dremora to carry your useless belongings.

 great riddle as always, Aarah

Re: The Unofficial Skyrim Trivia Game!

You are correct, Walker Jones! The exact answer was the Secret Servant option of the book rewards.

'Swept off your feet' was reference to the word wall giving you a word of the Cyclone shout.
'I wish no one to know' was the word 'secret'
'You'll be quick on your feet, if you share with this foe' was making you less encumbered by giving items to the secret servant to carry.

Your turn, WJ! :)
