A bit of UESP history

Post by Josjie »

Consider yourself lucky because a few years from now, this [&@%!] (edit: holy [&@%!] I forgot UESP has a [&@%!] swear censor. Too bad) can only be seen in a museum or you will have to buy the limited editon "History of the UESP forums" book, sold only at auctions for millions of dollars.

Due to a nostalgia overload and my inability to fall asleep, I have decided to write this topic. If there ever is a book like I just described, then this is only a very small part of it, so don't expect too much. My memory is also failing me a bit. I must have suppressed some stuff regarding UESP haha.

This forum started, if I remember correctly, somewhere around 2006. Or at least when I joined this forum, the oldest guys were from 2006. You might notice some people on this forum, especially members who have been here for some years and have a few thousand posts, talking about the "good old times" or the "golden ages". Well, back in 2009 people said that when they talked about 2006-2007. And I always said 2009-2010 was the golden age. I see now what an utter fool I was so don't worry, I won't fall into the same trap again. I'm nostalgic, sure, but I make myself no illusions that the forums were perfect back then. People who say things like that should really just quit the forums and move on with their lives because they're only spreading negativity around.

So, where were we? One thing you should know, is that Vivec's Tears was the most awesome person on this forum. And no I'm not saying that just on the offchance that she'll read this. Okay, she probably will, because I might just send her the link to this topic for lulz hehe.

Random fact. UESP was once using phpBB version 2. I see the forums are still using phpBB 3 and a version 4 doesn't even exist. Some things never change.
Anyway, for a good while we prepared to make the transition to version 3, which changed quite a lot. Most of the features could only be seen by us, the administrators, but there was also a shiny new lay-out. One change that a lot of people didn't like is that we decided to not let posts from the non-game forums (such as General) count towards your post count. This was actually pretty funny. You see, there were a lot of guys that ONLY posted in the General forums. So they suddenly went down from their very prestigious, ego-stroking 2000+ post count to something around 200-300. I also dropped a few thousand posts.

The reason why we did this was simple. We wanted to encourage people from helping others in the game forums, back then that was mostly Oblivion. So we only wanted those posts to count. It still amazes me a bit how people care so much about their post count, but it worked. People became a lot more active in the game forums while before that, all the cool guys were hanging around in General and some questions would be left unanswered for hours/days in the game forums. Maybe some people will argue that the forums died that day when we made this decision but I would probably still stand by it. The size of your post count doesn't matter, what matters is what you do with it ^.^

So yeah I was an admin once. I won't talk about any of the personal stuff with the other admins/mods out of respect for them, but there was a time when I was the only admin left. For a few months I was literally the only moderator on this forum. My luck would have it that at the same time, I had to face the most epic invasion of spambots that made Thermopylae seem like a cakewalk. Visiting these forums a few times a day just to remove dozens of threads, kick all those spambots and also reply to posts and messages even started to affect my high school grades (don't worry! I ended up pretty well, if I say so myself). Fun times.

All that happened between February and July. I think it was 2010 but I'm not sure. Cannot really be bothered to check my post history, sorry.

It was around August, let's assume 2010 then, that I assembled The Avengers a new moderator team and someone else had the brilliant idea to introduce lesser slave subordinate moderators called Tea Party mods. Oh and I'm just kidding with the adjectives, you guys are amazing. The idea was that these TPM's could do the 'smaller' moderator activities like editing/deleting posts and replying to threads, while the administrators took care of bigger issues (mostly boring stuff like updating the forum rules every year just for the sake of it or messing around in the admin panel when no one was looking). If I just gave away secret intelligence regarding the powers of the TPM's, please don't kill me.

So we got a big new team and when everything was running I left at some point, don't really remember why. I think I just missed the old guys/mods too much.

I'm getting tired now so let's put an end to this for now (who knows, if I get some responses and you guys like it, I might write a part 2). Let's end with some random facts, did you know that:
- UESP once had no subforums for the category General? There was just one General forum, which was a total mess.
- No one ever reads the forum rules (okay some people do). I never did, until I had to rewrite them. Hell I enforced rules in my first weeks as a mod that I had never read haha. Maybe I'll go to hell for that.
- Apart from the Elder Scrolls Online and Skyrim forums, UESP looks EXACTLY the same as when I left it. Except that I don't see my name so often anymore next to the stickies. There goes my ego haha.
- The Competition of the Month was started back when I was a mod. Along with the upgrade to phpBB3, the general subforums, the new post count etc. all these changes were meant to a) create a stronger connection between users and the forums, so they stick around and b) encourage people to be more active (especially in the game forums). Anyway, I'm really glad to see that the competition of the month is still pretty active.

Anyway. I'm not back, I just have some extra free time this summer but after that I'll probably move on. And I would like to end by saying that I'm happily surprised that these forums are still so active and to the current admins/mods: keep up the good work. You might not get the recognition for your work that you deserve but secretly everyone here is damn happy with you. The forums couldn't exist without you.

Great history lesson! Thank you for sharing, Josjie! I hope you'll come back with more stories and facts! It's always great to hear where things came from.

Really, this touch of history is refreshing from the usual 'back in my day' rant, and to that I am grateful you shared such a tale.

Anyways I knew plenty on those random facts, but never of the great spambot invasion>_> I do hope for a sequel to this history, including the details of why TPMs are pink

Heh, thanks guys. Maybe it wasn't entirely clear from my OP, but when I said that UESP is exactly the same, I meant that as a good thing. Even something as simple as our phpBB upgrade got a lot of mixed responses (although most people loved it). I'm glad in all those years the different mods/admins mainly kept the forums going and no one has changed it completely just to fit his personal tastes. You know, I was half expecting this messed up lay-out with a background picture, purple text and whatnot. Glad that's not the case.

And believe me, I know what you mean BetaB17 about those rants. Especially during our upgrade and before that (when the forums were, well, sort of dying) we got a lot of posts from old members that were basically rants 2-3 times as lengthy as my OP. They were often insulting/patronizing of the moderators. and complaining that the forums sucked now.

Also, I tried to spice up my OP with some jokes to make it a bit more fun to read, since it is so lengthy. In case I came across as an arrogant prick, let me be humble by saying that what I've done for these forums is long in the past and wasn't really anything special. I just enjoyed moderating these forums for a time and the result of that is that they're still alive, which is of course mostly thanks to you guys (and previous mods).

You want to hear a story? Look at the title and your coins— you're fully ranked now. Grand Master. This wasn't always the case: last October they tweaked the ranking systems because, in all the years after your great post-count purge, only two people ever made it passed 4000 official posts and earned the Guardian rank.

The rankings were changed around the time I would've become the Third Guardian. Would've is the operative word— they changed it less than a week before I hit 4000.

I'm not bitter. I made sure all my swords were cleaned, oiled and sharpened shortly thereafter, but it's not like I've learned where anybody here sleeps at night.
Baurus: Our job is to get the Emperor out of situations like this. Though I'll admit, things aren't going exactly to plan.

Casandra: At the moment, the deadliest weapon at my disposal is a goblin's head on a stick. I'd be worried if this was the plan.

The decision to update the title system was done speedily simply to make sure you could not reach the old guardian rank, Dark. Simply because I knew you would never get over that.

The forums officially date back to November 22nd, 2005. Which is a few months before the approximate date of the UESP's tenth anniversary. That was ten years ago. The UESP is a legendarily long-lasting website on the Internet at this point. I'm quite scared of the idea that we're going to celebrate a thirtieth anniversary, that's an incomprehensibly long time in web years.

Wow, I knew you're name was a major one in the history of this lovely forum, but daaang, I can't imagine fighting off all the spambots by yourself. Thought that would explain the origin of my most posted in thread. http://forums.uesp.net/viewtopic.php?t=16289 (I haven't in a while, but I haven't done much of anything on the forums lately.)

'Sup?

Obviously we need to start counting general posts, then I'd have enough to be Grand Master for sure. Or I need to win the CotM again, speaking of which, it's amazing that it's been around so long.

dark spark! Nice to see you're still around.

You know, I guess it never occured to me that I wasn't fully ranked before, so it didn't grab my attention now. Don't really care what I have tbh, but I can see the reasoning behind changing it.

Those were good days. I do miss Vivec's Tears and all the old members that's no longer here.

I remember when this forum still used phpBB2. If I'm not mistaken you guys upgraded to phpBB3 not long after I joined, if memory serves me right.

I can't speak for VT but I talk to the old crew from time to time on steam/email/skype/whatever and they're all doing good. I want to meet some of those folks one day. Did a lot of growing up back then and a lot of my posts reflected that. Kinda funny how much one changes from early 20s to later 20s.

The only thing that [&@%!] me off about the old crew/mods (joking here, calm down) is there was a point in time where someone was accepting a mod position at another forum and they wanted to be banned from these forums, ya know for the whole bad boy image. He/she threatened to break the rules if he/she wasn't banned immediately. My idea was to take that persons profile, ban them, give them the 'mod colors' and basically give the person a UESP version of a good conduct medal. Then take that account and make an overly dramatic post as to why they're leaving the forums. They (the mods) wouldn't do it! What the [&@%!] man how funny is that?! Joke, wasted.

VT is doing good. Dunno about the rest.

I guess I wasn't a mod when you submitted your request because this is the first time I've heard of it.

Tbh, I would still decline if I were a moderator today. While I like the joke, I feel it only brings you down to that person's level and I try to avoid doing that as much as possible (talking about real-life here, I'm no longer a moderator for any kind of forum). You could receive a lot of backlash for that (he/she might create other accounts) or if that person has issues IRL, you could only make it worse for him/her and I have too much of a conscience for that. Yes it's childish to demand to be banned but I would've just given him his wish and be done with it. Sorry to again deny your request

As a dude who joined in approximately 2011 (my 4 year anniversary is coming up in October) who got to see some older forum goers on their way out (Matt, Duruza, Eltee, where are you guys?), this topic is a great look back to the before-times and I love it. I've grown to love this place and it's nice to see where it comes from.

There are many origins of the Dovah. Some say that he simply came to be after someone spilt their skooma into the dried leaves of a tea. Some also say that he is from that other wiki and they will be burned for their sins for suggesting so whilst others claim that he is just the Dovah and may or may not be compared to the Joker in terms of backstories.

Or he was a lurker for several years before joining UESP during the active period and slowly watched the regulars at the time become less active then made his mark on UESP before slowly becoming the biggest and silliest UESP supervillian of this decade.

Or he is the physical manifestation of Sheogorath's coat.

Okay, TLD, that's fantastic, but this is about UESP, Jos and his stories, not tales of whimsy. :P

You were already a member when it was set up. I think Trampy set up an unoffical one back in 2011, then some point (2012 I want to say) it became official and you could access it from the top of the forum.

It was kind of strange when I had the realization that I'm one of those older users that everybody knows.

Union's correct for the most part, lets try to stick to the topic(s), okay?

I've been meaning to ask, how did the first TPM came to be, why pink, and why Tea Party Mod instead of Mod in Training. As a mod myself, and having been a pinky once b4, I understand the inside jokes n customs but non so about the origins

Hmm, I vaguely remember the creation of the TPMs but not really the reason behind the name, it's been a long time.

Ditto, but I think at the time tea references were made similar to how folks refer to sweet rolls. That being said, that was a long time ago and I'm really not sure. There may be a tea thread somewhere? Dunno.

I miss r. He needs to get back here and challenge musicman to a guitar-off. Man would that be sweet.
