Re: The TES Roleplayer's Thread

How many times can one misread Livia as Lydia? All of them, apparently.

After some fiddling, I finally got The Ruby Game Part 3 typed out and I'm working on typing Part 4.
As for the actual writing, I've finished Part 5 (The Hidden Blade) and added an unplanned part after that. The new Part 6 is now Broken Scapegoat. No doubt Vulom wanted revenge on her chosen scapegoat for doing something she hadn't counted on, so... She hasn't had the chance to do anything like that in a long time.

The Ruby Game Part 3:
Dragons in the Night
Spoiler:
Resting was not possible. Throughout the day, I was visited by members of the Legion who were stationed in the Imperial City. Most of them sought military advice; I gave advice only to those whose minds held no trace of Thalmor influence. It was a great opportunity to locate more Thalmor spies in the Imperial City itself. I identified one suspect… A Legate known as Adran Maryn. He was an Imperial of around 45 years old with golden hair and pale blue eyes; ordinary, if it weren’t for the fact that he seemed to be struggling against a great deal of fear… The fear of being discovered and losing his family. He was being forced to supply information to another spy positioned in the city. If he failed to comply, his family –a wife and four children- would be executed one by one. A common Thalmor tactic.

Nothing could be done about him, though, and I simply went about my business. I was left alone when evening arrived and, with nothing more to do, I retired to my bed for a few hours of rest. At midnight, I would rise once more to hunt; it had only been a day, but all that talking had… Left me thirsty.

For a while, my dreams were dominated by thoughts of the hunt; I chased my prey through darkness, catching them one by one and draining them dry. It continued like that until I arrived at the Imperial City. The Temple District, to be exact. The stone form of the Avatar of Akatosh –huge, with a head more than twice the length as that of an ordinary dragon- dominated the center of the district. Its wings, even though they were held at a sharp angle and not entirely extended, still stretched far enough that they passed over the wide streets surrounding the ruined temple and reached out to the houses on either side. The tail went over the soot stained wall of the temple and coiled neatly around it once. Its body, covered in the heavy armor plating of all other dragons, was slightly hunched, creating a bend in its form that led all the way to its open maw.

The stone cracked as I looked at it; streams of dust fell away as the Avatar of Akatosh began to move. His mouth closed and he pulled his wings in, dropping back down onto the temple. The head turned to look at me and I could sense a shadowy presence scrutinizing me from the other side. He stared for a minute –one long and mildly uncomfortable minute- before he returned to his centuries long silent scream of victory and pain.

I awakened suddenly and with a feeling of curiosity; the statue had moved. Why? It was almost as though Martin wished to speak with me. I got out of bed and, after putting on my armor; I shrouded myself with an old chameleon spell and transported myself out of the tower. There was no sense in disturbing any of the guards; security in the city might be lacking, but it certainly wasn’t in the tower. There was no shortage of palace guards. Outside, the only people around –beyond the usual lazy guards- were those drunkenly stumbling to their homes. I ducked and weaved around the drunks and eventually made my way into the Temple District itself.

Unlike the rest of the city, some of the stones of the Temple District were still stained by the smoke and fires of the last assault of the Oblivion Crisis. The cobblestone streets had been repaired and the burned trees replaced, but… The ruined Temple of the One and surrounding area had been left alone out of respect for Martin’s sacrifice. Stones from the blown out roof lined the ground around the rest of the blackened building; above the shattered walls stood the Avatar of Akatosh.

I opened the door to the temple –why the door was still there when there was no roof I wasn’t certain- and approached the old statue. The presence behind it –now palpable in my waking hours- shifted; he was watching, but hesitated to speak. Or perhaps he was being held back by Akatosh. I cast my spell and reached out.

“I was wondering how long it would take for you to try and contact me. You’ve felt my presence in your dreams for months and you’ve only just come,” he paused, “I’ve been watching you for quite some time now. You… And everything else. For 250 years.”

“Why? You defeated Dagon and restored the barrier so that Oblivion could never threaten Tamriel again. You completed your purpose. Why linger?”

“I would have joined my father and his fathers in death, but… I wanted to see what happened to Seryna. Akatosh granted me that last wish by binding me to the statue. In a way, I regret it… Watching a friend suffer while I couldn’t do anything… You wouldn’t understand that. You understand the concept of suffering, having felt it yourself in your early years and used it to break your victims, but you cannot understand what it’s like to watch it happen to a friend you loved dearly. Just as a friend, mind you. Please don’t go there,” he had sensed a sarcastic remark beginning to form in my thoughts and silenced it before it could be heard, “In my death, though, I gained memories that had been lost in life. Specifically the incident where you were sent back in time. That had ceased to exist –to us- when you returned to the 4th Era. It was a curious experience and I’ve come to understand some of the more cryptic things you said to me. And to the others… Watching Seryna grow into the warrior you referenced was surprising. She was brought to me starving and weakened to the point of near death after the battle for Kvatch. In the few months I knew her, she became one of the strongest fighters I had ever seen. She followed that path through the trials of the Arena, to her rise as the Divine Crusader, and her eventual fall as Sheogorath. I’ve been watching you and the Empire since her death. Now I wait to see how this will all play out. I might be tied to Akatosh, but I cannot see forward through time. He hides that from me.”

“You’ll be waiting for many more years, then. This isn’t going to be a short conflict. I expect it will take close to 50 years to reunify Tamriel… And who knows how long it will take to topple the Dominion.”

The presence of Martin Septim became clearer as he pushed further into my mind, “I’m aware of that. Is your only motivation for doing this the fall of the Dominion? No… You seek power and control. I can feel it in you. I saw you defeat Alduin. In a way, I find it amusing how similar you are to him… Even to some of my own ancestors. And myself, in my younger years.”

“We have the blood of dragons in our veins. Or had, in your case. The dragon blood and dragon soul do wonders for one’s personality. Dragons seek power and have an incredible will to dominate. It’s what gave the past Emperors their power. Some were… Better than others. The traits, though, are stronger in me than they were in your own ancestors.”

“Yes, and that makes you the key for what is to come. I have been trying to get your attention because I have a message… You are what Tamriel needs now. You are the only one with the power to reunify the land, as you already know, and you will be watched and judged by all the Nine. Especially Akatosh. What you do reflects on him as well.”

I couldn’t resist laughing silently to myself, “I care not for the Nine. I never have. I am a vampire, Martin Septim, and that will never change.”

“And that will one day be your downfall.”

“I know, but I will never truly be defeated. Disappearing is a talent of mine.”

“That is about as clear as your body at the moment. Know that you are being watched and judged, Vylanis Korathil.”

He withdrew. I couldn’t help but hiss at his use of my previous name; I hated that name and hearing used again brought back some of the fury of the past. My curiosity satisfied, I left the ruined temple and switched into hunting mode. The occasional guard wandered by, but they weren’t paying much attention; most were likely thinking about returning to the sheets of their beds or drinking wine with a good meal. They wouldn’t notice anything.

The Temple District was, unfortunately for me, home to some of the richest people in Cyrodiil (the situation in the Talos Plaza was similar). These people were usually fat, lazy, and made horrible snacks… Not unlike High Chancellor Quintus. I scanned through the houses and failed to find a single decent target; it was either a nobleman –or woman- or one of their servants. My choice was between a guard and searching another district. The guards, at least, maintained a reasonable level of fitness.

A guard it was, then. The ones patrolling the streets were out of the question; they wore a heavy armor that restricted access to their necks. It prevented decapitation in combat, but it proved annoying for the occasional thirsty vampire. I would have to feed on one of the day guards as they slept in the barracks. More difficult than the average target, but I was thirsty; it burned like fire through my blood, threatening to disrupt my concentration. Now it was more vital than ever that I kept myself well fed. I needed every bit of my mental capabilities. There would be a great deal of political maneuvering in the coming weeks… Or months… Or years. However long it took.

I slipped into the shadows –even though I was almost entirely invisible- and crept along the streets, following the curve of the outer wall until I reached one of the guard towers. The door was locked (as only the guards had access), but it opened almost immediately with a stronger opening spell. Most candles and lamps were dim, but a few still burned brightly; guards sat at tables, chatting and eating their first or last meals of their days. The beds were in the next level. I kept even my breathing silent as I opened the trapdoor and entered the guard quarters.

The day watch snored in their beds. It didn’t seem as though a single one of them was awake. I approached the closest one –a younger Imperial man with hair the color of rust- and ensnared him with my vampiric magic. There was no time to waste; as soon as he was under my control, I bit him. I could taste the alcohol in his blood, but that didn’t matter nearly as much as a person so sweet I felt ill. I could never understand how some vampires could like that. It was disgusting.

As I pulled away, I felt the gaze of another guard piercing through me. The room was dim to mortal eyes, but it was possible that he could see the two punctures in the man’s neck. I turned to face him –an older Imperial with greying hair and silver eyes- and latched my powers of illusion onto him; he was forced back to sleep. When he woke, he would think that it was just a dream. Hopefully he wouldn’t question it. I healed the man I had bitten and immediately transported myself back into my quarters in the White-Gold Tower. The chameleon spell fell as I sat in a chair in front of my desk.

My guards were sleeping in their beds. I could have simply fed on them, but it wouldn’t have been nearly as entertaining. But now that I had fed… I didn’t have anything else to do for the night. It would take a week or more for the full Elder Council to be summoned. The next day would likely involve more meetings with both the military and the odd politician. I shut my eyes and fell asleep once more.

Old habits wouldn’t work for what was to come. Even an old vampire needed to change to hide her condition. Sleeping during the day was no longer an option (unless I feigned ill, but that would attract healers and that was something I did not need); I needed to blend in with the rest of the mortals. Through… Perhaps sleeping in bed would have been a better place to start.
Part 4 (The Heart of the Empire) should be longer. And more interesting.
Part 5 is even longer still. More than 20 pages, though it's mostly a long criminal investigation with a few moments of the humor that showed up in earlier parts.
Part 6 is currently being written. It'll end with an execution.
Parts 7 and 8 haven't been started yet. 7 will probably be another short one (Vulom bribes her chosen replacements for the Elder Council and they deliberate on whether or not she should be Empress). 8 will most likely be short as well. It will probably end the moment Vulom is crowned.

Yes, I actually read something. It's a miracle, isn't it?

I haven't felt like reading in longer than I'd care to admit. Maybe working at a library is messing with me. I dunno.
See, I've been trying to read ASoIaF for ages now, but I'm still on the first book because I just can't be bothered to read anything.

Tell me about it! It always amuses me when people tend to assume I get to read a lot because I handle books all day, but no such luck.

Anyway, it's nice to know that I'm not just telling stories to the virtual Void here. I've been wondering lately...

I still check this thread from time to time, but truth is that it's turned into a cesspool of abandoned stories. This thread was started as a way to showcase people's characters and different roleplay strategies, an inviting place where we could all share the different things we're doing with our characters. Life came back here when there were roleplay discussions happening, but then folks started dumping their stories here and no one else came back. Just my 2 cents, but I see that as what gets in the way of other folks joining in because not everyone writes.

I'm able to play Skyrim 1-2x per week if I'm lucky and I don't write fanfic anymore, so that's another reason why I haven't been posting on here. I've got some interesting things happening in Felina's game...like...she's about to sacrifice Onmund to Boethiah and there's a whole fun story to that. But I don't want to write a story about it, so why post here? Until now...since your Void comment (Finn) touched my heart a bit. Sylmirie is building a house with Aicantar and Lieth is treasure hunting with Marcurio. I'm also in the process of trying to get the last few game awards but it's taking me some time.

How about if we had a dedicated TES Creative Writing / FanFic thread?
Or maybe rename this thread for FanFic and then 'reboot' the RP stuff in a fresh thread?

In the past I considered offering some feedback about what I've read on this thread but decided against it on the basis of this being 'an RP thread not a Creative Writing Critique thread.'

But then that's the real question.
Is this now an RP or CW thread? And would people be interested in (hopefully) constructive discussions about writing style etc?

No, this thread stays as a roleplay thread. In the past, I created a thread in the Arts section where people could go to post their stories and receive feedback. The thing is that:

1. This is a gaming forum and although we welcome the sharing of people's creative projects, most users are interested in gaming and the discussions pertaining to that.

2. Giving feedback on writing is not easy and people's feelings can get hurt easily. Feedback is a serious thing because giving the wrong advice can potentially lead someone down the wrong path in their writing.

What I'd like to see is a return to what this thread was intended for, which is discussion of roleplay strategies, etc. People are welcome to post their creative writing projects, but I believe dumping them off here without bothering to engage with others has been the #1 selfish reason why folks just don't come back to this thread anymore. I've received multiple complaints about it, so I'm not just b-sing this.

I used to write all the time but i took an inspiration to the head and dedicated all of my time building a shrine to Talos. Got arrested for stealing sweetrolls and got beaten to death by the Imperial Guards for nudging a small axe. [&@%!].

Joking aside, i've been in this thread during it's darkest hours where no-one seemed to read the stories of others and it turned into "READ MY STORY! I WON'T READ YOURS!" thread for a while. It really [&@%!] me off that none of my stuff was being read. Then life happened and i've not played Skyrim for almost a year now. However, i do feel that the thread's original purpose was hijacked and turned into a showcase of fanfiction galore.

I work with a bunch of other people who are watching DVDs, reading, and listening to audiobooks constantly. I have no idea how they do it.
Like... There was one girl a few weeks ago who took out two stacks of books nearly two feet high each. I don't know if she made it through them all, but if she did... Damn. I can't even make it through one book right now. Never mind how many were actually in that girl's stack.

Then the only obstacle preventing people from posting is themselves. Don't write? Then start a discussion. There's no problem with that. Just as long as stories are still posted in between, since I consider them a major part of the roleplay itself (especially when what happens to/with the characters is impossible in-game). If that stops, I'll have no more reason to post.

It probably doesn't help that quite a few of the people who used to post here are no longer active on the forums themselves, though.

But... If you want us to say what's going on with our characters right now...
I got forced to restart a week or two ago. Vulom VII and Narji II are the only two I've got now. Both the same characters as they had been before, really.

At the moment, I'm only working on Vulom. Normally, I use a combination of stealth, one-handed, and destruction while playing her. This one, being a lower level (I'm leveling normally instead of using the old Scroll of Perfection mod to avoid some issues with Timing is Everything), is relying heavily on a combination of stealth, one-handed, destruction, and restoration. It's fairly effective so far, but once she has reached her designated level 0f 116 (requires each skill to be reset once), she'll probably abandon restoration in favor of her preferred combat style. One-handed blade + Vampiric drain/summons/other destruction spells.

Quest-wise, she is working on doing the Companions stuff first. That was where the damage showed itself first with the original Narji, so I'm going through it first just to make sure everything works properly. So far it seems to be working okay, but I don't quite trust the game yet.

Unfortunately, I haven't played Oblivion in a while (beyond testing some flora mods), so I don't have anything to add for Frea (currently doing some Fighters Guild stuff) or Seryna (who has run out of things to do).
Haven't played Morrowind in ages, either. I don't even have a decent character for that. I've never been able to create one I find interesting.

You're missing the point. If all people are seeing are stories dumped off that no one else comments on (as Dov stated above), then the atmosphere feels unfriendly and people won't post.

No. I see the point. It's just that, when nobody is commenting and posts are infrequent, it feels empty. Empty isn't unfriendly on its own. It's only unfriendly if you think of it as unfriendly. Otherwise, empty is just empty and there's opportunity there to start a discussion or whatever else you want to do. If somebody else sees it and posts, anyway.

Wow, that comment of mine seems to have stirred up a hornet's nest... which may yet turn out to be a good thing, who knows?

This thread has always been a hybrid combining roleplaying discussions with storytelling/creative writing, and TBH it's been mostly the latter part which drew me here. I like roleplaying, and I like discussing the way I roleplay with other people and vice versa, but writing is what I love, and it was this thread and the awesome stuff people posted on it which inspired me to write fiction again after a long time, so it's kinda natural to post it here. That doesn't mean I'm not interested in discussing any other aspects of roleplaying, quite the contrary - I quite enjoyed the short 'renaissance period' on this thread last September which saw a lot of discussion about this and that and everything, and I surely never meant to deter anybody who doesn't write from posting whatever they feel like sharing here.

Maybe this thread would be best served by taking the creative writing/fan fiction part of it somewhere else - whether to Dohva's thread in The Arts (that would be this one, right?) or a new one (let's call it, I dunno, Tales of Tamriel or some such) - , so roleplayers who don't write could reclaim this one and do what they want with it? Thoughts?

PS.- Dohva, you've been thinking too much about sewers and cesspools lately, it shows in your metaphors.

The one thing I don't like about The Arts subforum is that it's even less active than here. Maybe creating a new thread (I do like the sound of Tales of Tamriel) would bring some more activity to it. I dunno. Depends on how many people are interested and right now... The count is at two who would post stories. Maybe more.

An issue I have with that, though, is that it would have to be a spot more for the sharing of stories than the critiquing of them. I don't like doing that, and I don't like getting it. I don't mind getting comments, but I don't like critiquing. Maybe you can ask people to critique it if you want them to, but that's a territory I don't want to go into. I'd rather just have a spot where we could share stories and talk about them (like in the past here where I've asked about, say, a coronation ceremony, or things that might happen to Narji in the wild).

I've been posting my stories on ElderStats as well, but I doubt anybody actually pays that much attention to the journal feature.

Mauin, no one has mentioned critiquing stories or bring to an end people posting their stories. All I am saying is that yes, people drop off their stories here and then don't even bother engaging with others. I could easily mention names but I'm not about to cause drama and we'll just leave it at that, although I'm sure you'll find a way to argue with what I'm saying.

I like (some) of the stories posted on here and agree that this is the right thread for them. There is no need for anyone to stop posting their roleplay stories on here, but let's not be surprised if a 100% focus on that has alienated others from potentially joining in on the fun.

So no, don't stop posting stories but yes, it's probably a good idea...if you want more folks posting here...to engage with others and not only think of yourself and share what's going on with your characters in other ways besides posting stories. Just a suggestion.

And to lighten the tone, Felina is getting ready to send Onmund to his death. The temptation to hurt him iss too great and she's about to break. Not sure how this sacrifice will go but maybe she'll get some power out of this.

PS: Finn, if my thoughts are about cesspools and sewers then it's your fault. :P

Well, as for myself, I like having my stuff critiqued and I like critiquing others' stuff, but I realize that's not everybody's cup of meat. Having a spot to share stories and talk about them on an immanent level (i.e. about what happens in the story rather than how the story is written) is fine by me, but to be blunt, Mauin, to the extent that's happened here in the near past we've mostly been talking about your stories with very little feedback at all from you, and that gets frustrating after a while.

Anyway, OT: What has poor Onmund done to deserve being fed to Boethiah?

Finn, he really hasn't done anything. Felina is being plagued to do it...like spiritually plagued is the best way I can put it. Who knows if she indeed will go through with it once it's about to actually happen. We shall see.

FWIW, I write my Elder Stats journal entries as a way to keep myself in character and to entertain my other Skyrim-playing friends (which includes those on this forum). Creative-writing-wise, I think my journal entries are more developed than the average "What I Did In Skyrim Today" post, but that's where I post the links because I don't want either to give or receive critiques ("LOL" and "That was cool" comments are always welcome), which was the impression that I formed for this thread.

I also think there's a meaningful distinction between writing detailed fan fiction that develops characters outside gameplay and writing post-hoc justifications for characters' actions in gameplay, but I don't know where I'd draw the line.

Indeed, I think the WYDIST thread has turned into a receptacle for a lot of pure roleplaying which would have done fine in this one - that's not just you, Gbaji, there's other people too who like to give thought-out accounts of their roleplay. I'm guilty of this myself, my posts over there have grown longer and more elaborate over time and a few of them probably could have been material for this thread (the story where Marilyn and Serana cured their vampirism with a dragon attack in the middle grew out of a WYDIST post which got just too long and unwieldy).

Good point, and an argument for having a dedicated fan fic thread IMO. Not sure about the line myself - for me the former sort of developed naturally out of the latter, but not everybody's that obsessed with their characters.

I could discuss it with the other mods, but when the subject has come up in the past, we have all agreed that this thread is appropriate for posting fan fiction. My original statement wasn't made for people to stop posting their fics here. It was simply--simply--an observation as to why more folks hadn't been posting.

Dohva, I wasn't questioning whether it's appropriate but whether it's wise, considering that the predominance of fiction may be what's scaring people away. Don't get me wrong, I don't think you meant to stop us from posting stories (which would be a strange intention from you of all people), and I don't want to kill or mutilate your baby. I love the idea of this thread as a place for all roleplayers to share whatever they feel like sharing in whatever form, and I'd like everybody to be able to do whatever they dig here without feeling under pressure to do something they don't or meet some standard or any such crap. That said, I do agree it would be nice if everybody posting here showed a minimum of willingness to look beyond their plate and interact, or we don't have a thread but just loose isolated strands.

But maybe we should debate less about the thread and talk more about roleplaying. I still can't get over Felina being about to sacrifice Onmund. What you're saying about her being 'spiritually plagued' (by whom? Boethiah?) sounds intriguing - I sense a story there which I know you're not going to write, but could you elaborate a little more?

It made me think about whom (if anybody) Marilyn would sacrifice to Boethiah (Mari I chose Lydia, but that was a wholly different animal on another planet, and Mari II isn't even Thane of Whiterun). I could see her teaming up with a stranger expressly for the purpose, but to betray an actual friend or anybody she's been together with for a while? I don't think so. She doesn't make friends easily, but once she has she's fiercely loyal to them (which is why being betrayed by people she thought on her side, like Mercer and Astrid, hurts her so much the more). The only thing that could top this would be her commitment to Sithis and the Night Mother - now that would make for a delicious conflict, if she were to carry out a Black Sacrament on somebody she considers a friend. :Twisted Evil:

Finn, she didn't go through with it. She just couldn't. Instead, Marcurio received the sacrificial fate. Felina has wanted revenge on him for ages and she loves her husband too much to betray him in such a way. She went home and spent time with him and their children, and she sort of snapped back into it. Why was she about to sacrifice him? Well, she found Boethiah's shrine while alone, and the daedra sounded intriguing. In learning more about her, Felina wished to know her, and you could say that she was then...like...demonically plagued. :wat: So then, Felina found all sorts of things wrong with Onmund and their life, and it just spiraled towards her taking him to the shrine. But as he was about to get sucked in, she pulled him away in flurry of tears.

Good?

She chose Marcurio because he embarrassed her in front of Onmund after they were married (I did a few stories on Marcurio's reaction to Felina & Onmund moving to Riften with their kids). So, being the alluring seductress that she is, Felina was able to get Marcurio to trust her with a hope of gold and adventure. May his soul be plagued forever in Boethiah's realm.

Astrid is a fool and Felina always despised her, so there was no loss there in that one. Marilyn sounds much more kind lol.

Great movie scene! Yep, I'm satisfied, thanks.

Speaking of Astrid, the reason Marilyn took so long to see through her was because she had a considerable crush on Astrid - which is btw how I 'found out' that she's a lesbian in the first place, way back in the first playthrough: her player found Astrid's voice quite alluring, and the idea of the Dark Brotherhood neophyte pining in unrequited love for the superior she's fated to replace (and in consequence being jealous like hell of Arnbjorn) added a dynamic to the DB quest line that was just too tempting to ignore... at least until Astrid made the mistake of driving out Cicero, which Mari couldn't forgive.

That's super interesting and I totally didn't know that her sexuality wasn't made clear to you to begin with! That's some real roleplay right there. :) Hm...I'd like to know more about how she treated the werewolf then. You know what's always fascinated me about taking my character through the DB story line? I always wondered what life was like in that sanctuary (which is ultimately what drove me to write a story of my own about it but that's another matter). The Falkreath sanctuary was such a dreary yet intriguing place. Who else has Mari had a crush on? Serana is the only one I know besides Astrid now.
Finn Wolfshorn wrote: at least until Astrid made the mistake of driving out Cicero, which Mari couldn't forgive.
Absolutely. Felina loves Cicero more than anyone else in the Brotherhood family. The Listener and Keeper have the two most intimate positions within the family, and Astrid's selfishness pushed Felina to the edge. I can remember it now: she entered the Dawnstar sanctuary to find Cicero with Onmund because she was afraid of what she would find and couldn't handle the stress of Cicero having been dead somewhere in there (although that's not what happened at all). When they finally found the jester, she knelt down by his side and tried to heal him. It was then she realized that Astrid was the one who must die, and Sithis delivered that opportunity for her to fulfill.

Arnbjorn and Mari detested each other from the get-go, and when he told her "I'm a werewolf, I like killing people, and I love Astrid" she read it as a clear warning: "Hands off my wife". The thought that Astrid let this brute... do things to her drove her nuts, and she was mighty glad that the couple had a separate room to themselves so at least she didn't have to listen to them. Arnbjorn's disrespect towards Cicero and Mom didn't endear him to Mari either. When she found him wounded outside the Dawnstar Sanctuary she was sorely tempted to finish Cicero's work and off him, Tenets or no Tenets (indeed I did but had to reload as killing him set Meeko and Shadowmere at each other's throats because of faction stuff). Instead she gave him directions to the local alchemist but also told him she couldn't care less whether he made it there or not. I like to think he understood quite well that she had been at the brink of killing him and restrained herself, so although she did nothing to help him he did owe her his life and knew it.
Dohva. wrote:Who else has Mari had a crush on? Serana is the only one I know besides Astrid now.
Well, the first time around I didn't give much thought to her lovelife beyond Astrid and Serana, but Mari II has been a lot more active. Quite early in her career, when she was new in the Thieves Guild, she had a fling with Sapphire (whose name just calls for something sapphic to happen) in the aftermath of hunting some bandits together which led to both of them getting drunk on the bandits' leftover mead and sharing a bedroll. Next time they met in the Flagon, however, Sapphire acted like nothing had happened between them, which puzzled and hurt Mari quite a bit. I'm not sure of the reason myself (except for S. having too recorded little dialogue, that is) - maybe she'd just got carried away by the booze and was embarrassed afterwards, or she wasn't ready for a relationship because of issues, or she feared to become the subject of guild gossip; most likely all of the above. Later, when Mari became Guild Master, I imagine Sapphire kept her distance to avoid looking like she was using their past connection to advance her standing in the Guild. However, when Mari found out about Sapphire's family she and Serana took Sapphire on a trip to Solstheim to meet her dad, and they've been good friends ever since.

Apart from that Mari has had long-time on-and-off affairs or 'friendships with benefits' with Saadia (Kematu had the rights of it about "a more... base need" ) and Lisette (because of her dialogue: "You should think about staying the night... Feel free to make requests!" Yes I know it's not meant that way, but couldn't resist). She also had a little crush on Muiri, but nothing came of it. But Serana is her One True Love, the first and only one she'll stay faithful to.

She also has a few female friends without benefits, in case you were wondering - Eola and Lisbet, for obvious reasons, but also Endarie of Radiant Raiments, who is sort of a kindred spirit in her snarky attitude. I imagine they resonate well on that wavelength, and whenever Mari is in Solitude they'll share a cup of tea, poke fun at each other and enjoy themselves slandering everybody else.

Wow, so...Mari gets around, eh? ;) That's quite the detailed romantic life. Maybe it's a Bosmer thing in general, since Lieth is the only one of my characters that's had more than a handful of romantic interests. All before Vilkas, of course...except for the whole Talvas thing but I think she's learned her lesson.

Sylmirie has only ever romanced with Aicantar and Felina with Marcurio, then Onmund. Leaving Marcurio at the altar was a hilarious moment since she married Onmund a week later.
