Today I found a note in the basement of the Bruma Fighter's guild reading:

"Head north good an hour or so.
You'll see a group of dead trees.
Head northeast until you come to the water.
Follow the shore upstream.
His house is close by.
Watch out for bears."

I'm still looking for whatever this points to.
Thoughts or ideas? I'm open to suggestions.

There are several such notes. As I recall, one is in the ghost ship in Anvil, one is in Lake Arias Caverns. There is a UESP wiki page on the various notes. I think it says they don't lead to anywhere, but check to make sure.

I agree with Chicken Slayer; in many houses there are various notes (such as shopping list etc), but they are pretty useless. The one that you indicated makes me think it was meant for a quest. There are some quest that have been canceled during game development, for example, there is an Ayleid ruin near Blankenmarch, (a village north of Leyawiin) which has on its inside some trolls named Azhklan.
Or Nerastarel's house, which is occupied by undeads and furthermore there isn't even a clue about who was Nerastarel and why his house is filled with undeads.
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Unmarked_Places there is a place named Dark Grove, in which there are dead trees that may be the ones that the note mentioned.
There is even a river near to the east, but the only house close to it is Drakelowe, which is inhabited by a woman, and the note refer to a "his".

Today I found an unusual cave with savage trolls, ogres and to my surprise a Minotaur! I looked it up on the wiki and saw it was quest related. Luckily I had the difficulty set at low and had the finger of the mountain spell.

Nonwyll Cavern north of Chorrol. It is a nice cave to clear out early and revisit because the monsters do not respawn and many of the chests have high quality loot that does respawn. It was definitely a brown shorts experience when I first found it, still wet behind the ears from the tutorial.

Finger of the Mountains is an absurd spell! I got it in one of my playthroughs when I was about level 35 and it's the least cheap (in terms of magicka) spell in the game.

It's a good spell at level one when the game makers expect most people join the guild. Why they made it leveled, I don't know. Probably just to screw with people, or maybe for emergency use against the Dunmer ghost pirates in the nearby cave.

Last Night I FINALLY completed the main quest of Oblivion, and in turn, perfected the game on the Xbox 360. This also marks the first time I've ever completed the main quest of an Elder Scrolls game. Kinda sad really. Don't get me wrong, it's nice to actually finish one, but at the same time, I don't have anything left to strive for...

Which means its time for a NEW CHARACTER! WOO!

Still, that oh-so-epic fight against Mehrunes Dagon wasn't really that epic. I snuck around the buildings and didn't even come close to the giant freak. Really, it was so easy to do... well, if you call the dozens of dremora and minor daedra trying to rip my face off and eat it easy.
Oh for the love of little green tomatoes...

Oblivion isn't the classic Es game, in which you're the hero of some prophecy (aside from being mentioned in one of Uriel's dreams). You're the deuteragonist - at least in the main quest-, helping Martin to eliminate the Mythic Dawn and prevent Dagon's plans.

I recently finished a playthrough at 100% completion. Or at least it would have been 100% if not for the fact that I couldn't manage to hunt down those last 3 Oblivion Gates. I only managed to close 57 out of the 60, and for the life of me, I could not locate the remaining ones. I used the map on the wiki of possible gate locations, and I used the "tmm 1" console command, but it still seemed like I had already closed every single gate that appeared. I know there's a glitch that sometimes prevents the game from crediting you with the full 60, but I thought this was fixed in the Unofficial Patch. Regardless, my character was completely maxed out and I'd finished every quest, bought every major piece of property available, done everything and found everything the game had to offer.

So I started a new game, and this time I'm doing things a little differently from usual. Destruction and Alchemy, which I rely heavily on, are no longer major skills. The reason I kept Alchemy as a minor skill this time was to allow me to max it out without being forced to level up. Cash is short in the early game, and selling potions gave me more than enough income. This actually let me earn enough money to buy the upgrades for Frostcrag Spire to activate the two altars. So I was using custom spells to complete the Mages Guild recommendation quests themselves. I made Mercantile a major skill this time, which isn't normally advisable, but I also got the Toggleable Quantity Prompt mod, which makes it much easier to sell items one at a time to quickly raise it.

I go around collecting and purchasing all the empty Grand soul gems available. Every 8th day, I make sure to convert them to Black soul gems. For me, the easiest location to reach is Fort Istirus, since it's right off the road that goes SW from Skingrad. I made a 100% Chameleon suit very early on, but since that makes it too easy, I switched to a Shock Shield suit instead.

I'm doing the Shivering Isles early, like around clvl 4. One of the most frustrating quests for me last time around was The Museum of Oddities. Most of the items were easy to grind for, but the one that kept eluding me was the Sheogorath-Shaped Amber, since it has only a 1% chance of appearing in amber limbs and stumps, which don't respawn. Fortunately, I found the ideal place to look for it: Knotbone Chamber. I save outside, run in and quickly search the four amber containers (which are clustered closely together) and if I don't find it, I reload. There are two additional amber containers in the third section, Knotbone Juncture, but I'd already found the unique amber I was looking for.

I'm planning to make my character a vampire later, and planned her out accordingly. But not until I max out the stats and skills for which vampirism confers a bonus.
One thing I never understood about Alchemy is how you're supposed to chew diamonds, unless you're Kanye West.

I did a thing today :D

I really don't play Oblivion that often (in fact I've never beat any of the quest-lines) but today I actually did a thing!

Alright onto the story: The other day I started a new character to wander about and explore dungeons. After wandering through quite a few places a managed to collect a couple of weird statues, so I ask my brother (he has played a lot more Oblivion than I have) what I should do with them. He doesn't have any idea what they are, but he says I should go around the cities and see if anybody wants them. So I start at the Imperial City, Talos Plaza District, and lo and behold the first unlocked door I go through is the right one! I do a few more missions and, long story short, somebody gets zapped; I get a cool helmet; and I complete my first ever string of quests in Oblivion. :D

I actually have played little bit of Oblivion recently. I created a bard, imperial named Livia (I forgot what I gave for last name). She's escaped the sewers and is now trying to earn some money in the Imperial City.

Today I created my first real roleplay, I mean I've done a paladin roleplay and other such things but never really had a backstory, anyway: Draken Illythyril, Drake for short, Dunmer born adopted by Altmer Nobles of the Imperial City on a political trip to Blacklight, after his true father was Assassinated by Morag Tong. (His mother died during child birth, but he doesn't know this). His adoptive parents are Eridur and Arya Illythyril, Eridur, a battle mage for the Legion (Captain rank), Arya a court wizard at the Emperor's side. Draken was trained and disciplined in both sword and spell from a young age, along with the use of light mobile armors, but with a temper to match Red Mountain's fires. He lost his cool while sparring with one of his peers at the arcane university and made a still portrait of the poor boy in soot and ash(flash bolt lol...). Thus landing himself in the Imperial prison awaiting charges of murder...and so our story begins.

Day 1
Hidden:
Escaped that damned prison by pardon of the Emperor himself. Hah! Shame he's dead now, nice old man. Gonna make my way to the priory and see what trouble i can get into.
Jauffre wants me to find the heir! An honor I'd say but I haven't the supplies for A journey to Kvatch. I'll head back to the Imperial City and make preparations, say goodbye to the folks as well.
Getting late, found a highwayman at a ruined watchtower, asked for my gold, i gave him a ball of scorching death, before i ran him through. Guess cats aren't too fond of fire either. Kitty had claws though, gonna make camp in his former abode and head to the city before daybreak, maybe use the darkness to my advantage, never been much of a sneak, but I'm in no condition for a fight after that.
I need sleep...

Draken Illythyril, Day 2
Hidden:
Said hello to mother and father on my arrival to the city, gave me a bit of coin, said I should try Rohssan in the market district to get myself a decent blade. Maybe find some work while I'm at it... Martin can wait for now.
Discovered a grave robbing plot for a lady by the name of Jensine, came away with a good bit of gold and a little claustrophobia. Damned crypts. Damned Nords, too. Well, him at least. Most are alright I suppose. Loud, but alright...
Found a ruin to the northeast of IC, Vilverin or some such, decided to have a peak inside, found a nice enough looking redguard man had setup camp within the the entry way. How do you think he greeted me? A damned hammer to the shoulder! Not even a "Hello". Hammer made a mighty fine lightning rod, though. He won't be bothering me or anyone else again. Suppose I should press on after a bit of rest.

Draken Illythyril, Day 4
Hidden:
Didn't write last night. Didn't sleep either. Never should've gone to those ruins... Those were corpses. Blasted walking corpses! Got out of there as fast as I could. Never saw such things in the city.. I'd read the stories but never believed them, foolish of me.
After I got my wits about me and washed the fetid, decomposing flesh-paste from my leathers in the river,I came upon a strange plant near the shore that almost seemed to hum with life, I swear I could hear it, call me crazy. Better ask Claudette about these.
Claudette was clueless. Sent me to Skingrad, rode 4 hours in the rain to get there. Upon arriving I rented a room at the West Weald Inn and asked after Sinderion, in the cellar they said. Damned cellars.

Sinderion is a grand fellow indeed, I enjoyed his company much more than expected, even asked if he'd take me as an apprentice, and he approved.
Turns out the plant is called Nirnroot, I've been tasked with gathering as many as possible for our research into it's applications.
Our ultimate goal is an elixir with grand effects for those who would venture into dark and forgotten places, can't wait to test the results.
Off I go again, I'll grab any Nirnroot I come across on my adventures, hopefully our research will be of groundbreaking significance.

Yesterday.
Eljar the Nightblade Wood Elf, born under the Mage, exited the sewars clutching the Amulet of Kings. Is now in the Imperial City searching barrels and crates, selling wares and buying what little spell and apparel he can afford.

Cutter the Wood Elf is busy working on reflect damage equipment, so that she can passively kill her enemies. She also enjoys making damage fatigue spells and falling off of the Imperial Bridge and rolling down hills. Endless entertainment.

Eljar the Nightblade Wood elf left the Imperial City and found Fort Empire. Killed some Imps inside and got a bit of loot. Followed the road and thought he'd found a glitched farmer, but it turned out to be the residents of Aleswell Inn that had had an invisibility spell cast upon them by some mage, who they think is hiding out in Fort Caractacus.
Carried on following the road, but ended up going in a big circle around the perimeter of the city, so left the relative safety of the roads and trailed through the woods. Got lost but ended up at, funnily enough, Weynon Priory.
Didn't look for Jauffre, instead noticed a big wall that surrounded Chorrol. Have just entered. Will be looking for an Inn for Eljar's first level up, and then he wants to try and join the mages guild.

(Forgot how dark the ruins and things are in Oblivion, compared to Skyrim. Man they are dark. Defo needed a torch in there. It's more scary but a lot more realistic.)

I'm going back through the game again, because I'm writing a 10 years of Oblivion retrospective. My guy is a Dunmer bard, so I joined the Mages Guild and went to Bravil to get some better Illusion spells. No fast travel this time, so lots of running up and down roads. I already did a leg or two of the main quest, so those annoying Oblivion gates pop up occasionally. I usually speed run through 'em to get the sigil stone, which is pretty much the best enchantment available at any given level. I just did the quest to get the Mage's staff back for the girl at Bravil. Game crashed halfway home from the Imperial City, of course. Luckily I quicksave often. I've learned my lesson over the years.
Monsters are bred in labyrinths, labyrinths are bred from walls. There is a reason the Giants choose to remain nomadic rather than follow their shield kin the Nords in building permanent settlements. The Tower is the beginning of all walls.

Eljar joined the Chorrol Mages Guild, obtained a book, stole it back, gave it to a woman, and obtained a snazzy shock spell in return.

Went to Fort Caractacus to find the mage who had made the people at Aleswell Inn invisible. Got the reverse spell scroll and bam, they are visible again.

Trekked to Bruma for the second mages guild recommendation. Solved the mystery of the missing Khajiit and got the recommendation.

Investigated the death of a local man, presumed to be a vampire, killed by a vampire hunter.
The guard in the man's house said he would only speak to fellow guards or the vampire hunter, so spent a good deal of time stealing the relevant bits of apparel to look like a Bruma guard; Eljar even went back to the Imperial City to steal some steel boots.
Alas, the guard still wouldn't share information. In the end, it was just a case if persuading/bribing him to talk. *sigh* Dressing up as a guard would have been a much more fun way of getting it.
Still, Eljar has discovered that he quite likes stealing, and may do it more in the future. He returned the stolen Bruma gear though - he doesn't know where he can sell it and doesn't want to be caught with stolen goods on him.

^ Yeah, it was annoying. It was the only quest that I had to finish in Vanilla (Hermaeus Mora's too but you have to finish all the Daedra quests to start it) with my main character.

I failed the quest because the Countess was dead but was glad that the notification of the quest wasn't bothering me anymore.

Now I only need to finish the Shivering Isles because Vanilla and KotN are 100% done.

Enjoy the Isles, by far my favorite questline.

Though really, anything involving Sheogorath is just fun.
