Why am I taking damage
I am wearing Boots of the Atronach =50% resistance to F-SH-Fr, and a mundane ring= 50% resistance to magic. That should give me 100% resistance to magic, but I am taking damage from pretty much everything on every shot: wraiths, liches, xivilai, spider daedra, fireball towers, etc.
My wearing heavy armor wouldn't reduce the effectiveness of those items to 95%, would it? I'm playing at max difficulty and 5% x6 might look like the damage level I'm taking per shot, but my health is maximum for lvl 26 so I don't know.

Re: Why am I taking damage
Wearing Armor only reduces the Effects of Spells that you "CAST". It does not effect enchantments, or potions.
Could it be poison effects, or physical damage?
You did have an issue with your abilities being stripped from Molag Bal, maybe it affected other area's that are not so apparent. Were you having this issue before you did the Molag Bal Quest? You might have to go back to a previous save, and test it out.

I was pretty sure of that, but it was the only thing I could think of. Molag Bal happened too long ago for a reload and the problem is not that life threatening. I just have to pay attention now or switch out for more protection.
I've watched this damage occur for a while by and tested it by deliberately standing in the line of fire from the things listed above. My health went down with every magical hit that wasn't absorbed or reflected, so it can't be poison or physical.
Before I noticed I was taking damage, I was over protected for a few levels with some +35% resistance sigils on my deadric armor, I also had a Helmet of the Mage, Peryite's shield, and the hands of the Atronach in addition to the ring and boots. I took all of that armor off to let the guy kill me, but I may have had the mundane ring on at the time, but the ring still registers, unlike my nord frost resistance and birthsign magicka. I later switched out for a suit with Fortify magicka sigils and a chamelion sigil, leaving just the boots and ring for magic resistance. I have ~80% Reflect Damage from the Escucheon of Chorrol, an Amulet of Axes, and the Ring of Namira and I rarely take much damage from a physical hit.
The Molag Bal resurrection made me disappear. There was no image in 3rd person mode after he brought me back to life, and I think the cross hairs and weapons were gone in 1st person. I forget how I fixed that, probably by a quick save followed by a reload to reset the graphics. I didn't check my stats at the time. It was late and I was half awake.

Re: Why am I taking damage
What does your Active Effects tab say? Is it listing everything that you have on, giving you the proper bonuses? Is it showing any penalties?

Re: Why am I taking damage
It shows everything I have on. No penalties, diseases etc, no red numbers on my attributes. The only things missing are my Nord and Mage birthsign bonusses, which I haven't added back yet.
I'll see if I can test it pre Molag Bal. I think I had both the ring and boots before I did that quest, but I don't know if I have a save in between.

Re: Why am I taking damage
Fire, Frost and Shock are elemental forces, even if they originate from a cast spell. So 50% magic resistance does nothing against them. You have 50% resistance to elemental forces and the same against magic. So you are still taking half damage from all of these,
Re: Why am I taking damage
Really now? http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Magic ... Weaknesses
If you add the 50% Magic Resistance from the Mage Birthsign (that you lost from the Molag Bal Glitch), then you should have 100% Magic Resistance, and take no damage from spells. The Boots of the Atronach would then be redundant.
Wiki wrote:Resist Magic: alters the magnitude of any spell effect (from a spell being cast, or from an enchantment on a weapon or staff). Certain types of poison effects are also altered: Damage fatigue, Damage health, Damage attributes, Damage magicka, Silence, Drain attributes, Drain magicka, Drain health, Drain fatigue, and Burden poisons ARE resisted by resist magic. Paralysis and Elemental damage (Fire, Frost, and Shock damage) poisons ARE NOT resisted by resist magic. In other words, all spells are resisted by Resist Magic and all poisons except for Paralysis and Fire/Frost/Shock Damage are resisted by Resist Magic, but since NPCs don't use Fire/Frost/Shock poisons players don't have to worry about them.
Wiki wrote:Whenever resistances of different types combine, their effects are multiplied. For example, a Fire Damage spell is altered by both Resist Fire and Resist Magic. The total damage done by the spell would be multiplied by:
(100 - Total_Resistance_to_Fire)/100 * (100 - Total_Resistance_to_Magic)/100
Sorry, I mis-read what you originally typed. I do remember giving you the addspell for the Mage Birthsign that you lost from Molag Bal, and though you had that added as well. The Resist Fire/Frost/Shock are reducing damage 50%, then The Resist Magic is reducing it another 50%, so you are taking 25% damage, plus the x6 Damage from playing on max difficulty. So there is nothing wrong, the game is working as it should. I just thought you had the 100% Magic Resistance.Chicken Slayer wrote:The only things missing are my Nord and Mage birthsign bonusses, which I haven't added back yet.

Re: Why am I taking damage
That statement conflicts with the fire damage page which says: "Fire (shock, frost) damage is not decreased by Armor. It is decreased by Fire Shield and Resist Fire; it is enhanced by Weakness to Fire."
I'm not saying you are wrong, just that one of the wiki pages must be wrong.
If the calculation is right, I can put on the Hands of the Atronach 20% F-S-Fr, which would put me over the top at 105%.
Mage sign doesn't have resistance, only fortification. You are thinking about Breton ability, and if magic resistance does not affect f-s-fr damage, they are weaker than previously thought.
Thanks for the work guys.
BTW, I did test with a pre quest save by standing in front of some imps in Robber's Glen Cave with just the boots and ring on. I took damage, but I didn't check my health numbers to see how much,...which I can do.

Re: Why am I taking damage
Boots of the Atronach is going to reduce all damage you take from Fire, Frost, and Shock by half.
If you're hit with a Fire Damage 20 pts spell, you'd only take 10 damage.
Mundane Ring further cuts that in half.
Meaning you'll take 5 damage.
Slapping on the Hand on the Atronach would stack with the Boots, but NOT the Ring.
So from that initial 20 pts, you'd first cut it by 70% instead of 50%.
20 pts * 70% = 14
Meaning you'll only be taking 6 points of damage.
Then the Mundane Ring cuts that in half, so you'll be taking 3 points of damage.
The thing to take away from all this is Resist Elemental Damage =/= Resist Magic. They do not stack together.

Re: Why am I taking damage
I think that's it. There's this wiki page which says that different effects are applied after one another, which is exactly how you calculated the effect. It also fits with my memories of the Breton character I played; she had 50 % Resist Magic as a racial ability and a Mundane Ring, and she could stand in front of the fireball towers without taking damage.PrinceJonathan wrote:Boots of the Atronach is going to reduce all damage you take from Fire, Frost, and Shock by half.

Thanks, I use unconventional math with tragic results sometimes.
Re: Why am I taking damage
I just ran through a character with 100% Magic Resistance, and no other Resistance (fire/frost/shock), and from several sources I took no damage. I even consoled in Fire, Frost, and Storm Atronachs in, and they did no fire/frost/shock damage.
