Lightless Oubliette = White Gold?

Post by legoless »

Is the Lightless Oubliette supposed to be the "defiled copy" of the White-Gold Tower reported by Morian Zenas? It seems like the wiki has taken this stance, and it certainly looks like WGT from a distance, but I can't find anything directly supporting that. Any insight?

I don't remember any NPCs or notes in the game drawing the connection, but it definitely resembles it. When I was in the safe NPC town in the middle of Coldharbour my first thought upon seeing the spire in the distance was "White Gold Tower". Visually it's very similar. On the other hand, the same placeholder graphic is being used for Adamantine Tower currently. In theory, the two could look very similar in the actual lore, but I feel like this is one of those recycled resources things.
Monsters are bred in labyrinths, labyrinths are bred from walls. There is a reason the Giants choose to remain nomadic rather than follow their shield kin the Nords in building permanent settlements. The Tower is the beginning of all walls.

Shame. I had the same thought from a distance. Even the walls and bridges look similar to the Imperial City.

It's actually lore-friendly for the Oubilette to resemble WTG. Adamantine, not so much. It has an utterly unique structure in the lore - almost space age.

Isn't that just the adamantium interior? I thought the Direnni built a big fortress around it.

I interpreted that to mean a ground-level keep of sorts. I'm pretty sure the adamantium cylinder in the center is said to be of proportions so wide and tall that no mortal architecture could match them - a Tower of Babel of sorts, except metal and still standing. Therefore, I doubt they'd have been able to cover the entire thing. I interpreted the lore as the surviving Direnni building a castle, a small city and a wall around the Tower.

It sounds like you're thinking of the Crystal Tower. That's the one with the multi-dimensional height. The Adamantine Tower has always been described as the inspiration for WGT, and an inherently mortal structure.

Crystal Tower and all the others were built in imitation of it, yes, but it's beyond the ability of any mortal to reproduce.

However, secrets there must be, for I took sight-and-angle measurements of the Direnni Tower from the eight points of the compass. According to my calculations, and given the known characteristics of all available materials, building an edifice of its proportions should not be possible.
