Spell Absorption, Reduced Magicka and Magic Immunity

Post by ZeroMagicka »

I created a pure-melee character, who has none of the magical skills as primary/major/minor and has the 'no magicka' disavantage in daylight and darkness. So far I basically 1-4 hit anything, and more or less take no damage: since I'm built to be a melee tank, the monsters in the game are (in their wildest dreams) at best my equal.

The character also has magic immunity, fire immunity and shock immunity. I have a bracer as well as a shield which have Spell Absorption ('of Magicka' by randomly generated name convention). Does the 'spell absorption' ever trigger, other than when I'm hit by Frost spells? Or would Magic Immunity always catch the spells? And since I always have 0 magicka, if it does do spell absorption, I must not be capable of taking damage from it. I've had a few imps deal some damage, but other than that the primary result of a lich shooting a fireball in my face is the lich dying.

I know that magic-immune melee death machines aren't exactly an innovative build in The Elder Scrolls games, but compared to the other 3 I've played this is probably the most totally-unbeatable character I've run across. As I said above, most physical enemies are inferior to me; what's more, most powerful enemies rely at least partly on spells, which do absolutely nothing to me.

It's still pretty fun, but it's pretty funny that my first, semi-blind attempt at min-maxing has apparently made the game a cakewalk? I am level 12, and I can run into a room full of Daedra of any kind you want, it's just a chance to level up my Longblade.

I've always found being able to cast magic far too useful/interesting.

Levitate
Water Breathing
Mark/Recall.

Etc.

Utility spells, plus healing, most of the time. Once/if I'm higher level, then it's fun to make the equivalent spell effect to duplicate what you've done. With added damage/spell reflection...and watch Liches etc kill themselves with their own spells!

Spell Absorption only works if you have enough free magicka to absorb the spell.
If your casting skills are low, and your maximum magicka pool is small, then you are unlikely to be able to absorb any spells at all.

I prefer a character that is a good a warrior as any, but has spell absorption and magicka 3x int.

I ended up creating a character who uses Magicka and is not magic immune. Does the Breton Magic Resistance 'stick' with a custom class like Paralysis Immunity for Elves, or is it overridden?

Anyway, you guys make some legit points regarding utility spells, but I actually did not need them: I had such incredible physical stats and my athletic skills went up so quickly that it was actually quite possible for me to climb, jump and swim my way anywhere.

My current character uses magic and melee (think AD&D Cleric), but he's nowhere near as invulnerable as my gonzo/min-max character was. The worst part about not using magic was just because it's fun, it's probably more practical to run around everywhere at 50 miles per hour and punch doors off their hinges, lol.

In the longer run, you will absolutely need levitation and open spells (unless you want to rely on randomly dropped magic items), recall is VERY handy too.

But in the end, nothing prevents a caster from becoming a better warrior then a pure warrior.
Look through the spellmaker, and gain access to the magic item maker, and you'll see what I mean.

Yes magic resistance does carry over, I don't know if the racial magic resist + class advantage magic resist stacks for immunity.
But if you have spell absorption, resistances are just a waste, if spells do become a problem anyway, try the resist spell, spell, or better yet, reflect spell.

I didn't get Spell Absorption for this guy, but thanks for all the information and tips. I haven't played since I was 12, this game is awesome.

Even as A magic user I Always Have martial skills as my main weapon, and for bashing down doors. I save my magic for the really tough enemies, although I still run away from liches and deadra I have never actually got a good look at a lich they usually kill me on sight. But then I have a bad habit of starting new characters a lot.
