I just started playing Daggerfall recently. I got out of the starting dungeon and headed to town, where a shopkeeper asked me to get him a scroll from a nest. I'm not sure of the name of the quest, I can look it up later if you need that info. I get to the nest, and I'm in the middle of the dungeon somewhere now. my question is I think there is supposed to be a deadra of some kind guarding the scroll. You need a Mithril or better weapon to kill one of those right? So will there be one in the dungeon? if not always there, might one pop up in a loot pile, if I save before looting and keep reloading? I'm level 2, if levels make a difference with loot.
another question I had is the tutorial was enabled on my game, but the screen that tells you what you should do only pops up after I did whatever it was. like the screen that tells you "in the next room is a rat, let's go kill it" didn't show up until after I killed it, went upstairs and killed a couple of bats. is this just my game, or does everyone's do this?
can I complete this quest?

I haven't encountered a daedra before, but I think they are too strong for you right now, even if you happen to find a mitrhil weapon.
Also, treasures are completely random, depending on your level and luck, regardless of what mission you are doing.
You should just ignore that mission. The penalty is not that harsh, really.
On the subjet of the tutorial, each lesson will pop up after a few minutes. They are based on passing time, not on your actions.

Different materials only become available at certain levels, as far as I remember you have to be level 4-5 or something like that to find Mithril weapons.
Your only options are to avoid the Daedra (run), use magic, or use the Rusty Ogre Lodge glitch.
Killing any kind of Daedra at level 2 is going to be tricky though, unless you have spell absorption.

I didn't know about needing the mithril weapon before I started the quest. If I need to be level 4 or 5 before those will pop up, reloading a save until I get one in loot won't work. I'll have to find the exit and leave, unless I can manage to run away from the deadra. I have no idea if that will work, but I can try, lol.

Next time you should choose a save slot and use it exclusively for saving when you have no missions, or you just cleared one. Then you'll be able to go back to before you accept any mission in case something goes wrong.
Oh, talking about missions going badly, I read somewhere it's preferible to not save indoors (taverns, residences and stores, dungeons are ok) if you are in the middle of a mission, because the NPC location could bug when you reload, or something like that. I haven't experience it, actually, but I'm not taking chances.

that's a good idea, Suvid. I'll have to remember to do that.

Re: can I complete this quest?
ended up creating a new character. the one I had didn't have enough spell points to cast anything, and since I had picked several magic schools as skills, I figured it would be helpfull to have more magic. My new character has the 3x increased maggery advantage, as well as immunity to paralyze and resistance to poison. I balanced it with not being able to use blunt, missile or short blade weapons, or anything steel. so far seems to be doing ok.

Immunity to Magic grants you immunity to paralyzation as well as poison and disease.
Spell absorption makes spell casting 100x more useful, since area at range spells can be reabsorbed, but still do damage = free of cost.
