Reputation enchantments

Post by Suvid »

Uhm... Hello!

I hope you can help me with some questions I have, about clothes and reputation enchantments.

Well, I started Daggerfall a while ago as a female breton healer, joined a Guild, did a coulpe quests... and then I realized clothes didn't have any purpose except looking nice and pretty! I mean, I expected better reactions from nobles if I wore one of those frilly dresses, or worse reactions if I went around on my *ahem* birthday clothes, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

It spoiled the roleplaying thing a bit for me, so I installed this savegame editor, dfhack. First, I tried to reduce my reputation with the five major factios by 20, to see how it worked, and after loading the game I saw that everyone refused to talk to me, peasants and merchants alike.

Ok, good. Then I tried to give a "Good Reputation With Nobles" enchantment to a dress, and "Good Reputation With Commoners" to a pair of pants, using the editor.

I equipped them and I talked to some peasants. Well, the enchantments seemed to work, because now people talked to me, althoug a bit rudely. But then, I unnequiped the items and... oddly, they still talked. They only ignored me when I dropped the clothes to the ground. Even after I put the items on the cart, people talked again.

It's not supposed to be like that, according to some guides that say the "Good Rep. Enchantment" only works if the item is equipped. So, are those guides wrong? Is my game bugged? Maybe that happens because I used a save editor? Is there a way to fix that so the enchantments only work when I'm wearing the clothes, or should I just give up and play the game normaly?

Also, peasants only talked to me if I had the dress on the inventory, not the pants, so it seems they are treated as Nobles by the game and not Commoners as they should be. Even at small towns. That's a bit weird too.

Anyway, sorry for the long post (and sorry if there are some grammatical errors, English is not my first language), and thank you for taking your time to read it.

To answer your question, yes your game is bugged. It's the most likely option whenever we're talking about Daggerfall.

Clothes mainly served to allow your character to have a somewhat unique look, regardless of what your armor might be. It's a really good idea that I wish they'd have kept doing into the more recent games. I would suggest going back to before you used dfhack if you are annoyed by the change, otherwise just keep playing as you are right now.

Thank you kindly for your answer!

Ok, I'll try reinstalling the game again and see if that fixes it (or, at least, the peasant=noble thingie). Reinstalling worked before with a bug that kept crashing the game after cancelling or finishing the tutorial, so it's worth a try. I was about to start a new character anyway.

I just hope the reinstallation doesn't cause new bugs, maybe I'm risking too much xD

No problem. I normally just try to ignore the bugs for as long as I can when I play the game, although they usually end up killing the experience sooner or later.

Well, reinstalling didn't work. What a shame.

Meh, I guess I'll just play the game normally.

If you're interested in researching this further, I'd suggest that you start a new game and get your clothes enchanted in the item maker, just to make sure it's not some side-effect introduced by using the editor.
