Oblivion: lava walking boots

Post by ZeldaLinkAaron »

I once saw a topic over a quest in the beta that was removed but as a reward in completing it you would get lava walking boots and i was wondering if someone knew about it.

The beta? Oblivion didn't have any kind of public testing. Boots enchanted with waterwalking should do the trick, although there's no way to resist lava damage.

There actually is a way to resist lava damage.

The damage inflicted by the orange tang/jello in the Deadlands is listed in the game's code as "Water Damage", and there is an effect called "Resist Water Damage", but you need access to the Construction Set to use it.

So using the CS it would be a simple matter to take a pair of boots and slap Water Walking and Resist Water Damage 100% on it.

Since there is such an effect in the code, it wouldn't be a stretch to assume some "lava walking boots" was planned at some point but was dropped for unexplained reasons.

Yes, there's the unused water damage resistance, but as you said it's not featured in the game. Most people would assume that fire resistance would do the job, which it doesn't.

That "Water Damage", I assume, is the damage mechanism used on your character when they begin to drown. Hence "Resist Water Damage" essentially means "Resist Drowning".
Baurus: Our job is to get the Emperor out of situations like this. Though I'll admit, things aren't going exactly to plan.

Casandra: At the moment, the deadliest weapon at my disposal is a goblin's head on a stick. I'd be worried if this was the plan.

I thought "resist drowning" was water breathing? I guess it wouldn't be the first time they put 2 things in that did the same thing, but it would seem useless.

"Water Damage" begins to hit you when your air meter drops to zero. Water Breathing simply regenerates your air level to the point it never actually falls.

Ok I just got finished actually testing the "Resist Water Damage" effect and I made some interesting discoveries.

First I created a Resist Water Damage custom enchantment and found Resist Water Damage has no magnitude regardless of whether the spell is on Self, on Touch, or on Target.

Since the only factor I could change was the Duration, I gave it a duration of 300 seconds.

When I attached the enchantment to a pair of boots and equipped them in-game, I found the Resist Water Damage spell icon was nothing but a large pink box.

I further noticed that equipping the boots DID NOT add "Resist Water Damage" to the active effects menu.

After equipping the boots, I dove into Lake Rumare and watched as my air meter steadily dropped. Upon reaching 0 air, I started taking HP damage.

I then dove into an Oblivion Gate and tried to swim through the lava and nearly died.

I was about to write the "Resist Water Damage" effect off as useless, but then figured that based on the fact there was no such effect in my active effects menu despite having the boots equipped, I should re-enter the CS and try making a full custom spell rather than a constant effect enchantment.

So I went back and made a plain custom spell: Resist Water Damage 300 secs on Self

I wrote down the FormID and used console commands to add it to my spell list.

It cost 1 Magicka to cast and this time it did add the effect to my active effects menu.

I dove back into Lake Rumare and cast the spell. The big pink box appeared in the upper-right hand corner of the screen as expected and when my air meter ran out, I started taking HP damage again.

Based on this I conclude "Resist Water Damage" does NOT equal "Resist Drowning".

I then went back into an Oblivion Gate and cast the spell again and was able to swim through Dagon's Fanta Sea perfectly fine.

From this I conclude "Resist Water Damage" = "Resist Lava", and that it has no effect when worn on a piece of apparel like a boot or a ring.

So the closest one can get to a pair of Lava Walking Boots, is to just create a custom spell in the CS with Resist Water Damage and Water Walking.

It's not that hard to use really.

I learned how to use the CS by reading DarkRider's Basic Tutorials found here: TES Alliance: Consturction Set Basics

I mostly use it for interior design if I don't like a building's layout or feel a house needs more storage space, or creating custom items and enchantments. I haven't learned how to write scripts, make quests, or edit NPC AI packages yet.
