Today I found out that if I am near to gaining a skill point with the skeleton key in my possesion and I remove it from my inventory (leave it at home etc), I will get three skill points with the next three tumbler locks when using a regular pick. These points then transfer when I pick up the skeleton key again.
Example:
With the skelton key, my skill was at the 70>71 boundary. I put the key into storage.
I picked a 4-tumbler lock using a lock pick and my skill jumped from 30 to 33. Each of the first three tumbler lock-up gave me a skill point (so it was counting the sum of lock-ups from point 70.)
I retrieved the Skeleton key and my skill is now 63 rather than 61 (because the skill fortification is based on skill points rather than the sum of tumbler lock-ups.).
[I did this at two different skill points to check that I wasn't seeing things.]
This is nice for managing security points when trying to level Agility efficiently.
My question is, because when using the skeleton key, your skill won't/can't go any higher once "natural" Security skill reaches 60 (you are stopped at 100 by the +40 key fortification), will the same thing happen when you put down the key and start using picks again (i.e. one tumbler leveling based on the sum of tumbler lock-ups after the last point)?

Re: Skeleton key skill point question
I don't think so. If I understand what you're trying to say correctly.
I think what you are witnessing is something like this;
-your Base Security is 30
-with SK your Security is 70
-Say you need 1,000 exp to go from 30 to 31
-Say you need 10,000 exp to go from 70 to 71
-You pick a lock with the SK until you've earned 9,000 exp
-Drop off the SK somewhere
-You now have a Security of 30 with a 9,000 exp surplus
-Pick a lock
-Game suddenly realizes you have a surplus of exp
-Gain a skill level
-Still have a surplus of 8,000 exp cause the game used 1,000 of that surplus to go up a level
-Pick a lock
-rinse & repeat until surplus is spent
Once your Security Skill reaches 100 (with the skeleton key in your inventory), you no longer gain experience when you pick a tumbler and you're no longer able to generate surplus exp.
I think. I'm not sure.

Yes. This is what I want to know.
Is this confirmed or surmized?
