Artifacts and the Alliance War
I'm probably reading into it too much, but do we know why the PvP campaigns in ESO are named after artifacts (and the occasional scholar)? I assume they're probably just TES-themed server names with no real meaning, but I can't stop picturing Titus II wielding Goldbrand at the Battle of the Red Ring. It would be really cool if these artifacts were actually playing a role (lorewise) in the war, since we likely won't see many of them featured in ESO otherwise. Am I missing something?

Re: Artifacts and the Alliance War
I dare say anyone who has been rewarded an artifact has had an Elder Scroll scribed to their fate.
Baurus: Our job is to get the Emperor out of situations like this. Though I'll admit, things aren't going exactly to plan.
Casandra: At the moment, the deadliest weapon at my disposal is a goblin's head on a stick. I'd be worried if this was the plan.

Re: Artifacts and the Alliance War
I think they simply chose iconic lore names, the way servers in any RPG are named after lore items, people and events. I wouldn't read anything more into it. The few Artifacts that appear in the storyline are either not equipped by the player, or are owned very temporarily in a specific context.
Monsters are bred in labyrinths, labyrinths are bred from walls. There is a reason the Giants choose to remain nomadic rather than follow their shield kin the Nords in building permanent settlements. The Tower is the beginning of all walls.

Shame, I was excited seeing Scourge mentioned in ESO...
Would've been a much better Fighters Guild ultimate than Dawnbreaker in my opinion. A Daedric artifact dedicated to mortals, being used against Molag Bal's hordes.

Re: Artifacts and the Alliance War
The book about Scourge is still in the game, interestingly, as is Tamrielic Lore by Yagrum Bagarn. Artifacts are still very much a part of ESO's lore, but they simply don't appear. Wuuthrad has a kickass cameo in the EP storyline, wielded by Ysgramor himself (well, his ghost, and a flashback vision of him). That's the most notable one I can think of except for the Amulet of Kings, which plays into the main quest.

Staff of Magnus appears in the AD storyline, and Wabbajack/Fork of Horripilation in the Mages Guild quests. Can't think of any others, although I heard that the Ebony Blade is featured in the veteran Crypt of Hearts dungeon.

From what I understand, it isn't actually equippable. It's stuck in the ground, as a lure for the player and his friends. When you grab it, it spawns the big boss fight. If you get to loot it at all, it's probably something you turn in for a quest reward. I guess I can see why Zenimax would treat these items that way. You don't want like 600 dudes running around with Goldbrand and Spellbreaker.

I dunno, you can see players running around with Rahjin's Mantle and the Brimstone Crown and a dozen other unique items. They totally could've implemented classic artifacts.

Re: Artifacts and the Alliance War
The thing about MMOs is that they're never really finished, as long as they're around and making money. There will be updates for that duration of time. If they're really lucky like WOW was they'll go for years, so there's still plenty of room for such additions. Personally, MMOs aren't my bag and I've dropped out as a player already. Just not my preferred type of game. A lot of people seem to like them though, so who knows? It's one reason I believe reviews of MMOs are misleading. They become obsolete within six months of a game's release.
