Some Daggerfall user interface issues seem obvious in retrospect, but I played for days before I figured them out. For the benefit of others here are a couple.
1) For the bow to recognize arrows that are in your inventory they must be "equipped." They can only be equipped coming from someplace else -- not the inventory list --for example, your wagon, a dead enemy or a pile on the ground. My usual practice is to "remove" them to the wagon and then "equip" them back into my inventory.
2) When you receive a "message," it shows up as just a parchment in your inventory. The message can be read by selecting it with the "Use" button.
3) In spell-making, the numbers in the formula are shifted up and down by clicking on the bars immediately above and below the numbers.
4) When levitating or swimming. use "page up" and "page down" to rise and descend.
Good Luck!

Daggerfall when first played can be one hell of a confusing mess, but once you get used to it it's pretty awesome

I wish I could "like" or upvote that post - these are EXACTLY the things that confused the living daylights out of me.

So true
As I posted a minute ago, my first playthrough like 3 years ago was hell and I picked all the wrong things when building my characters. diseases in Daggerfall as well as poisons are no laughing matter and can cause permanent damage or even wreck your save file if you didn't know you had contracted one and save while adventuring too far from a temple.
Overall though once you get that stuff down your set. I also found 1 handed to suck horribly compared to 2 handed and leather/chain as worthless as well.
There are a lot of things I wish Bethesda would have kept that were present in Daggerfall such as cloaks, a bunch of clothing, all the unique skills such as climbing and Levitation, the magic system, owning a ship, wagons, wereboars, more deadric artifacts, all the areas, large towns, all the NPC's in the cities, etc.
Daggerfall actually feels like a world instead of a region like in Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim.
But seriously, once you get used to it Daggerfall is extraordinary. I regret not doing research and blindly jumping in on my first playthrough because I had a bad experience with the game and was dying regularly due to poor decisions at character creation and going to certain areas while undergeared and not having a silver or above weapon or enough magicka to even cast a spell so certain enemies were unkillable. I had to literally use expolits to even complete the game and just the other day I started it again after using the knowledge I learned and it's much better.
I thoguht that having played Morrowind and Oblivion I knew enough to play it but I was naive because Morrowind and Daggerfall are nothing alike.
I do think Daggerfall is a bit more forgiving than Morrowind in some ways though such as the leveling system, item drops, quest rewards, etc along with having storage always nearby with your wagon making hauling tons of gear childs play and being able to clear dungeon after dungeon.
Then you have immunities that can be gained at character creation rather than having to wait until you can enchant your own gear which takes 30+ hours in Morrowind unless you grind.
So in a lot of ways Daggerfall can potentially be the hardest or the easiest Elder Scrolls game, there are just a lot of variables and the less you have the better. Lycanthropy with the ring of Hircine is ridiculously overpowered in Daggerfall though and totally breaks the game, especially if you have a good hand to hand skill, I am totally not doing that again this playthrough haha!
I totally have no clue where to get the open magical locks spell though and the Mages Guild isn't selling it which is the only problem I've ran into so far. I used lockpicking in my last game but the skill was crappy from my experience and too much like Fallout.
Re: Help for new users that I could have used!
I remember trying to use the spell maker and was disappointed that everything was 1-1 + 1, etc. I tried clicking on the numbers to make them go higher, but they didn't change. Then I went on google looking for solutions, and I facepalmed when it turned out that the grey blocks above and below the numbers were actually arrows!

Go to the Mages guild and find the NPC to make spells with. Choose Open and leave it at default numbers. Don't change anything. This spell will open any lock just about except for ones specifically needed for quests.. Also.. way cheaper to cast. Try another Mages guildhall to find the regular Open spell. It'll be there somewhere.Travalanche wrote:I totally have no clue where to get the open magical locks spell though and the Mages Guild isn't selling it which is the only problem I've ran into so far. I baught this game when it came out and played it on my 486 back in the 90's. I had to use the manual for controls so I understand where you're coming from there. Had fond memories of dying over and over again.. lycanthropy and vampirism. oh joy! And the diseases!!! O_O
What is more beautiful than the face of your god yet more wicked than a demon's forked tongue? Dead men eat it all the time. Live men who eat it die slow.

Different Mages Guild's sell a different selection of spells, but it matters not witch spells they sell, just use the spell maker.Travalanche wrote: I totally have no clue where to get the open magical locks spell though and the Mages Guild isn't selling it which is the only problem I've ran into so far. homemade spells have a tendency to be more efficient anyway, so yeah, just make the spell your self.
