Horseback combat

I don't seem able to figure out fighting mounted. I've seen videos and people just swing their weapon and almost always hit. I almost never hit, I've tried swinging when the target is near the horse's head, near the horses shoulder, near the horse's middle but I can't seem to find the point of aim. Sometimes I "grab" the enemy with my weapon and send them flying, but not damaged apparently. I have a similar problem with bows. I aim at the cross-hair but all my arrows seem to fall short. Any tips would be welcome.

I find the sword only attacks to the side and bows have a small arc to either side from the front

I've found out that horseback combat tends to get your horse killed.
