Re: Enchanting for a priest character?
"M'aiq was soul trapped once. Not very pleasant. You should think about that once in a while."
I did think about that - and then I banned the use of soul trap for all of my characters. But aside from the ethics of soul-trapping, it's actually quite nice to not have to switch to that spell during combat. And as others have already mentioned, filled soul gems are abundant enough that it won't prevent you from leveling Enchanting or from charging weapons. I still end up with more filled soul gems, including grand souls, than I know what to do with. If you're just using soul trap for practical reasons, try not using it, and I think you'll find that you don't miss it at all.

Re: Enchanting for a priest character?
Just curious, but what level do I need to achieve for this overabundant supply of filled grand soul gems to start raining from the heavens like mana showering me with filled grand soul gems for enchanting because I have yet to experience this. I rarely come across filled soul gems, let alone grand ones. Of course, I also spent enough time crawling through dwemer ruins collecting metal to level dwarven smithing on previous characters and got so thoroughly burned out on anything and everything related to the dwemer that I now avoid them like the plague.

Re: Enchanting for a priest character?
Many of the merchants carry filled soul gems. I don't know at what level filled Grands start to show up in their inventories, but they do. I should have included the caveat that I play characters for a long time. I sometimes forget that probably most players don't stick with characters as long as I do, so the "just buy filled soul gems from merchants" approach may not be as effective if you re-start a lot.

Around 36+, I think. Merchants don't usually carry things until you can start using them. There's also Solstheim and Tel Mithryn.

Farengar has greater and grand soulgems (filled) for sale under level 10. You can also try College of Winterhold.

Re: Enchanting for a priest character?
Yeah...he and the castle mages usually have around a 20% chance of possessing a filled Grand soul gem in their inventory. At least that's my calculation. Your biggest issue at low levels is gonna be the money to afford one.
Monsters are bred in labyrinths, labyrinths are bred from walls. There is a reason the Giants choose to remain nomadic rather than follow their shield kin the Nords in building permanent settlements. The Tower is the beginning of all walls.

Re: Enchanting for a priest character?
While I was in Wolfskull Cave, pulling a pre-filled Black Soul Gem off a slain Necromancer for the umpteenth time, I began to wonder about something. If a someone with an empty Black Soul Gem in their possession is killed by a weapon enchanted with Soul Trap, shouldn't their soul get sucked into the gem they were carrying?
Baurus: Our job is to get the Emperor out of situations like this. Though I'll admit, things aren't going exactly to plan.
Casandra: At the moment, the deadliest weapon at my disposal is a goblin's head on a stick. I'd be worried if this was the plan.

Re: Enchanting for a priest character?
I'd tend to agree with that assessment, but maybe there's some mystical connection regarding being in possession of the soul gem to be filled when you soul trap something (or someone)?

Re: Enchanting for a priest character?
I guess one way to protect yourself would be to carry a Black Soul Gem inside a pouch or other kind of conatainer that has some protective ward inscribed upon it. A sort of Stay-Fresh wrapping you have to break opne in order to use the gem when so desired.

Stop applying logic to fantasy!
lol

Edit: On a side note, I never really got the whole “Black Star” quest. Wouldn’t a normal black soul gem have served the same purpose without the hazard of corrupting a daedric artifact and [&@%!] off a daedric lord in the process? I mean really, what was the point?

Re: Enchanting for a priest character?
Black Soul Gems weigh twice as much as Grands. A reusable Black Star helps keep the burden down. And consider this: Azura is so high and mighty about prophecy, she shouldn't have been surprised by what happened next.

Re: Enchanting for a priest character?
Yeah, I considered that too, but more along the lines of wondering why Areana got p/o'd when I took the star to Nelecar. After all, she said herself that Azura's prophesies always come to pass. She should've seen it coming, no matter what choice I choose and whatever decision I decide to make.Dark Spark wrote:And consider this: Azura is so high and mighty about prophecy, she shouldn't have been surprised by what happened next.
Oops, there's that whole "determinism"/"predeterminism"/"predestination" (whatever you want to call it) vs. "free will" inconsistency (farce) again.
Mutually exclusive. They can't coexist.

Re: Enchanting for a priest character?
Well, according to Oblivion: http://uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Priest#Priest priests are capable of both Conjuration (soul trap's school in Skyrim) and Mysticism (soul trap's school in Oblivion), so apparently, they can use soul trap?

Re: Enchanting for a priest character?
Probably because the main requirement to being a priest is that person administers the beliefs and teachings of a particular religion or cult. Dragon Priests* for instance seemed to be masters of Destruction and also powerful Conjurers. Their beliefs were altogether militant, though, and their gods were not nice by any stretch of the imagination. For this type of priest, soul trapping presents no ethical dilemma whatsoever. A priest of Mara or Stendarr would have very different views and skill sets, but would still likely employ enchanting of some kind, if only religious enchanting of altars and amulets, which may not even involve conventional methods like soul gems. It's possible this kind of enchanting uses some other mechanic not represented in the game. Something like the runic enchanting of ESO, or something more spiritual and direct, like a blessing from an actual deity.
*In the specific case of the Dragon Priesthood, while it's logical to assume they'd be expert Enchanters, they were not personally responsible for the enchantments on their masks and staves. According to lore, these were crafted and enchanted by the Dovah themselves and passed down to their most faithful human followers. While it may seem odd to think of a creature with a body type like a Dovah crafting and enchanting things, it's essential to remember that the Thu'um can be much more nuanced than it's presented in the game.
