You don't get the manuals? Assume you don't get the soundtrack either. That kind of sucks. Fallout 1 is smaller than later games because it's a smaller game. It would say out of the older games the feel of Fallout 1 is more like 3 and the feel of Fallout 2 is more like New Vegas.

'A' lets you enter combat, 'F1' lets you see the controls. If you need an in depth guide here. But well you know, spoilers. I recommend saving often enough and on 3 separate slots. If combat really is too hard you can change it in the options, there is also the always run option that makes running the default and holding shift makes you walk instead of run which is the default.

I love Fallout 1 & 2 but they have problems. One of which is how there really are bad ways to build your character that can result in you being screwed over. There are rubbish skills like Throwing and skills that are useful but not until way after you start like Energy Weapons. If you're willing to start again my recommended build for Fallout 1 and 2 is:

S: 5
P: 6
E: 5
C: 7
I: 10
A: 10
L: 4

Tag: Small Guns, Lockpick, Speech

Traits: Gifted, Good Natured.

Some recommended perks for Fallout 1: Awareness, Bonus Move, Bonus Rate of Fire, Tag (to take Energy Weapons later on)

Be careful what you say. Say the wrong thing, [&@%!] someone off and they likely won't want to work with you, may even want to kill you. Aimed shots can be good but only the Eyes and the Head are worthwhile. Don't kill children or everyone in the world will hate you for pretty understandable reasons.

Leave Vault 13 for one day and when you return you can do some quests. Use a computer on level 3 for some XP, talk to the overseer for supplies and you can get into the armory by persuading the guard outside, there's a shotgun inside which will really come in handy early on. Ask in every settlement about the water chip, look out for people who would know about vaults and about water they should point you in the right direction. The game doesn't end once you get the chip but after you take it back there's no more time limit. You can extend the time limit by paying some water merchants in one of the cities

2 Rad-X will give you 24 hours of full radiation immunity. Assuming you don't sleep or waste time and take it as soon as you need it you should have enough time in irradiated places with just that. You'll need three rope in the entire game, two for Vault 15 and one for The Glow.

There is a guy south of Bob's Iguana Bits in the Hub, if you do a mission for him (have to be level 5 first) you can get the best Small Gun in the game. It's the .223 Pistol, "That Gun" from Fallout: New Vegas.

Wait until after you get the water chip back to try to join the Brotherhood assuming you want to. Their quest will take a long time and you don't want to spend that long while you're still on the clock. Joining really is worth it.

----

If you are really, really stuck about the Water Chip I'll put it in this spoiler but don't read it unless you really need it.
Spoiler:
It is in the ghoul city of Necropolis, in the Vault under the city. It is east of the Hub, the Water Merchants in the Hub can give you the location.

---

The Temple of Trials at the start of Fallout 2 sucks. It's awful, one of the worst tutorials I've seen. Also you basically need to have tagged Steal, Speech or Unarmed to beat it.

----

I'm playing Fallout: Tactics at the moments. It's very meh, play it if you want but you wouldn't miss out on much if you skipped it. It is sort of canon though, not fully, it has a lot of inconsistencies. One of the scribes in Fallout 3 mentioned the Brotherhood in Chicago.

Short Rant in the box
Hidden:
DOGMEAT STOP RUNNING INTO THE [&@%!] FORCE FIELDS!!!!!

Holy crap, the companions on this game are so infuriating. If they had some kind of command system, I could make them a force to reckoned with, but instead they just spend their days standing in front of my shots and walking into super mutant miniguns. These are some of the most annoying and useless companions I have ever seen. I mean come on, walk up to the mutant so you are in his minigun's range, and so he is OUT OF YOUR RANGE?!

I've spent like half an hour playing the old fox, chicken, worm puzzle with these morons, except with an extra member.

Mariposa is an effin nightmare when you have 4 followers and cannot shut off the force fields....
Mariposa is really easy if you have Power Armour and a Turbo Plasma Rifle, but the companions can turn it into hell. I couldn't manage to turn off the force fields, so now my four buddies are driving me up the wall by standing in front of doorways and halting all progress, in addition to many other nuisances.

EDIT: Okay then, game complete after about 33 hours. Even though I had the prerequisites for all the good endings for the cities, I still got the the bad ones because I took too long. (The year was at the end of 2163 by the time I finished). I feel a bit cheated because of it, I mean I went about looking for all the good quests and doing them just for the good endings, but they never gave me any warning that I might take too long; after I delivered the Water Chip, they took away my timer and I assumed everything was cool, but apparently not.

Game felt a lot smaller than I thought it would be. Fallout 3 lasted me much longer, and I have to say it left me more satisfied at the end. Also, after playing Fallout 1, I actually find that I feel a lot better about the 3rd game, and like it much more. They all feel nice and connected now.

Anyways, it's a pretty good game. Has a number of flaws, just like any other, but still enjoyable. I'll probably start Fallout 2 sometimes later today.

Companions in Fallout 1 are stupid, I've never had any of them survive to the end. Damn Ian shooting me in the back. Canonically Dogmeat actually dies from a force field in the military base, it's in the Vault Dweller's memoirs in the Fallout 2 manual. Fallout 2 is much better in that regard, they are more useful, you can give orders and you can make them move if they're blocking you. And yeah, Turbo Plasma Rifle and Hardened Power Armour kick ass. It's possible to fire the Turbo Plasma Rifle 5 times in a turn with the right build.

2163? Damn that is long. I do like actions having consequences but that said the followers ending is bugged and the time limit on the Hub is way, way too short.

Katja was the most bearable of them all, give her a power fist and she's quite powerful; can kill a super mutant on her own. Ian's alright when you give him the 223 pistol, but he does have a tendency to get hit by my plasma. Tycho's a nutcase who has something against Dogmeat, never seems to hit anyone but his own teammates. Dogmeat's a sometimes useful knockdown-er, sometimes infuriating little [&@%!].

I don't mind actions having consequences but I feel as if the time limit thing in this game is unfair and stupidly implemented. I mean, my Shady Sands and Hub were perfectly fine when I visited them and it was 2 years later, why the sudden ending twist? it didn't make any sense to me. I spent the time to explore the whole map cause I thought there were secrets to find and also because I grinded for a little while on some Super Mutants, and I also had to return to certain places to do quests I missed out on/check for new quests, how was I to know I had limited time?

By the way, I managed to have all the companions survive right up till the end, though it did require several furious loads and retries.

Kerr, that's the exact same build I used although it's pretty much the only one you can really run without gimping yourself which sucks. What I like about the newer games is that any stat build can do pretty well depending on your playstyle and I agree with your comparison of Fallout 1 to Fallout 3 and Fallout 2 to NV.

I would actually rate fallout NV as my favorite if not for the technical problems, I still might anyways because after playing through 3 again it feels like your playing the inferior game from a story/content perspective.

One thing that I really miss that Fallout 3 did well were the companions, you actually had an equal amount of good and bad ones so being evil was totally viable but in NV only Raul and the mutant lady (forgot her name) don't bother you for it.

It sucks because Cass reminded me of Clover.

And another problem was that if you actually do all of the missions for Cass
Spoiler:
she get's killed
which sucks.

As for DLC, I also think NV wins and I've played them all. The only DLC I didn't really care for were the Operation Anchorage, the Pitt, and dead money. I actually sort of enjoyed Honest Hearts because you weren't locked out of content and could do whatever you wanted without consequence which lets you play as yourself instead of doing what gives you the most loot. Also, Alight Shining in the Darkness is probably my favorit gun because I own a chromed .45 1911 irl so it makes me feel more like I'm in the game.

I hope the new Fallout is as good as New Vegas, Obsidian are excellent writers so they should do all of the writing while Bethesda develops the game (because Obsidian are poor developers IMO).

Don't get me wrong I love Baldurs Gate 2 and Planescape Torment a TON and they are installed on my PC as I type this but ever since they transferred from the PC to consoles/PC they've gone downhill (sort of like Bioware).

Yeah, you really can make your character wrong in Fallout 1 & 2, I liked that build because it let me be good at pretty much everything I wanted to be good at. Gifted is so good.

Fallout New Vegas doesn't really deal with objective morality that much anyway. Karma is mostly a side note which really I'd prefer not having it at all. A Light Shining in the Darkness is pretty damn sweet, I love it. From what I've seen Joshua Sawyer appears to know quite a bit about guns, the animations of Graham inspecting it were made based off his pistol. Ulysses was going to be a companion but got cut for time, still Ulysses turned out pretty well in the end.

New Vegas is my favourite Fallout too, I found it took my favourite elements of Fallout 1 & 2 (story, setting, characters, humour, choice and consequences) and Fallout 3 (gameplay, although the gameplay in New Vegas is better) and put them together. It is kind of a mess on the technical side, most Obsidian games are buggy messes but to be fair Bethesda did the QA. Bethesda isn't very good at QA.

Generally speaking, after playing through Fallout 1 and playing Fallout 2 for 25 hours, I can see the whole ''1/3, 2/NV'' comparison. However, unlike all these other players, I actually feel like Fallout 3 fits in pretty well with the rest of them. This isn't randomly said, I have now played the games and came to the conclusion myself, no guesswork. Humour in general feels pretty similar between the games, and I personally believe that Fallout 3 has the the Fallout feeling on the ball.
Hidden:
I'm not going to argue this^, it's just an opinion, and anyone else can think whatever they like.
Up till now, I'd still probably hold with Fallout 3 as my favourite. Its combat and gameplay are a lot more enjoyable, as well as its exploration, and the skills come across as a whole lot more useful. (What exactly does ''Traps'' do? Repair and Science get companions in Fallout 2, lockpicking is barely ever used in the first game). In terms of setting, I'd say the games come across as generally equal. When you consider the fact that a lot of the history of the first couple of games were actually given outside the games (Fallout Bible and all that jazz), Fallout 3 seems pretty decent because most of its new history is given in the game itself and it hasn't been given outside support (yet?). I'd say it's only downfalls in comparison with the others are its main storyline (could have been done a lot better), and a couple of minor details here and there with the world itself.

In terms of DLC, I disliked Broken Steel's story additions, Old World Blues, and Lonesome Road. The rest of them, I enjoyed. Especially The Pitt and Honest Hearts.

What do you mean? I remember completing her companion quest and she came out of it perfectly fine. Not that I really care that much about her, she was probably the companion I hated the most in that game. Every stupid comment or annoying joke she made, made me want to just give her in to the Van Graffs.

Out of all of New Vegas's Companions, I probably liked Raul Tejada the most. Good guy with a good story, and he was also actually quite funny.

EDIT: Yay, I actually can move people, so no problem with NPCs in San Francisco. Thank goodness.

One quest I can't finish is the ''Make a deal between NCR and Vault 15''. Apparently, because I already delivered the computer parts before killing Darion (who was too strong for me to defeat, so I left in order to gather better equipment), now that I have killed him, the deal is impossible. Even though I can stroll right up to Tandi, all I get is floating dialogue and I can't ask her about it. So that's another one out the window. I'm stuck with ''Antipathy'' reputation with Vault 15 because I made an attempt to help them. Not my fault they're a bunch of useless numpties who can't survive on their own. Good riddance to them, NCR's better off without 'em.

EDIT 2: Phew, I managed to open the stuff. had to waste some points on lockpicking but luckily it didn't take a super high skill level.

Skyrim was completed basically 2 years ago.

When are we gonna get any news on Fallout 4, the only thing I think we can say for sure is that it's taking place in New England, specifically the Boston area.

Bethesda have been busy with the recent court battle for the rights to Fallout and have just won that last year. They've also been busy with ESO in an advisory role and i suspect they are creating an entire new engine for the PS4 and X1 for the next gen TES and Fallout.

I don't know about that. It might be, but anything backing it up (Doctor Li going there, potential stuff on the android railroad...) are the only things that might be "hinting" towards it. Beyond that, there isn't really anything supporting any particular location. I've love to see how the Midwestern Brotherhood are doing (since we've already seen the East coast and Mojave), so I would love to see a game taking place in Chicago, though.

There we go, Fallout 2 completed after 46 hours or so. Once again, I was given a bunch of bad endings but not all of them. And once again, I look up the endings and see that I have a lot of prerequisites.
Spoiler:
Couple of endings that I got which didn't make sense were the Redding and Vault City ones. See, I got the ending where it's annexed by Vault City simply because I gave them a cure for Jet (wanted to strike a blow against the Mordino's), but even though I gave Marge Lebarge (NCR supporter) the excavator chip, I still got the Vault City ending. Simultaneously, I got the ending for Vault City where it stagnates and eventually gets absorbed into NCR, so all my endings for Vault City are all over the place.

Also, the final level was a bit disappointing. I had Enclave armour, and I had told all my companions to wait in SF, so I was able to wander around the Enclave oil rig completely unmolested. I even walked right up to the president and had a little chat about his plans, revealing my true identity, and then I just said ''Alright then, I'm going to stop your evil plan. But don't press that alarm. Bye!'' and just wandered off to set up a meltdown and he didn't even try to stop me. Once I ran into Frank, I realised I was gonna need the turrets to beat him, so I loaded my game and tried to sneakily dispose of the president to get his keycard, but there were no sensible methods of killing him!

In the end, the only way I found I could get rid of him without setting off an alarm was by walking right up to him in his office, ramming 9 Super Stimpaks into his face, and then waiting 3 hours for him to die without him putting up any kind of resistance; which is a bit of a ''gamey'' way of getting the job done. I mean, I even managed to convince a scientist to poison the air system, but the president wasn't killed by it for some reason.
The sequel fixes a lot of the companion troubles of the old game, but I still think the turn-based system just isn't very exciting, and I'm glad the gameplay was changed. A lot of my time in Fallout 2 was spent waiting for a bunch of brahmin or civilians to walk around the battlefield doing nothing, while I just sat there waiting for my turn which would never come. :P

Oh, and one little interesting tidbit: Throughout the entire game, the only Enclave personnel that I killed were Dick Richardson and Frank Horrigan. I never killed a single Enclave soldier. (You know, aside from the explode-y part)

I liked being able to disguise myself as an Enclave soldier to get through the Oil Rig as opposed to being forced into combat. I agree that having the only sneaky way to kill people being walking up to them and jamming like a dozen super stimpaks into them is ridiculous.

Oh and if you are wondering about when Fallout 4 is going to be announced:
Hidden:
We all know it's a question of when not if. And you can't say for sure it will be in the New England Commonwealth but it is probably the most likely location. If I could pick anywhere for Bethesda to place Fallout 4 I would pick the Gulf Commonwealth, New Orleans to be more precise. It is an interesting city in regards to architecture, environment and the historical and cultural background. It is also basically a blank slate when it comes to lore so you can do whatever you want with it.

I got nothing against being able to disguise myself, but I think it was maybe just a bit too safe. I basically have access to every part of the Rig, even though I'm nothing more than a grunt. Up-til now, I don't think any of the Fallout games (1, 2, 3, or NV) have had very well executed endings. They have good settings and events that take place within them, but the endings always feel like they fall flat, and feel very anti-climactic to me.

In regards to the 4th games setting: Really, any part of North America could make an interesting Fallout game setting. Though I would prefer if it remained in the USA, I'd be happy with any location within the continent, I think. The only places I would really be against would be if it were to actually leave the US or it's two close neighbour countries. (or...one close neighbour country and ''little america'' )

Oh yeah! I forgot to mention another crappy ending: If the Enclave wipe out the Deathclaws in Vault 13, YOU get blamed for their genocide in their ending! :x

I can't decide between Fallout 3 and New Vegas. I recognize New Vegas as the objectively better game and RPG with more choices, better fleshed out factions and characters with actual personalities and stories...but there's just something about the Capital Wasteland that I like, the Mojave feels really boring sometimes.

Don't even try the discussion dude. As a Fallout 3 fan, I have had this discussion 7 billion times across the internet. It is a pointless waste of energy and the argument will never end. Just buy both games and enjoy them both, no need to keep up the moaning about Bethesda.

We've been trying to get out of the loop in this discussion topic. Can we just leave the subject alone? It's been done to death already.

Ah, Fallout:Piece of [&@%!]. What a [&@%!] disgrace and immature [&@%!] that was. I mean, what the [&@%!] was interplay thinking? Let's get rid of everything that makes Fallout, fallout and replace it with the 90s version of the future. Let's get rid of all roleplaying elements and do a mother of all retcons by forming the BOS in texas. Let's have very linear levels and let's force players to pick one of the 4 generic templates. What a pile of brahmin [&@%!] that was. I understand that they were trying to introduce it to the consoles but they failed and pretty much killed Fallout untill Bethesda bought the rights to use it before the legal troubles.

As for Fallout 4. I hope it'll be set in a large area with no established lore to avoid contradicting existing lore and not have the BOS or supermutants appear as Fallout doesn't just consist of that. That and the BOS is starting to get a bit predictable, imo.

Haven't actually played Brotherhood of Steel, so I can't really say. Obviously, it's commonly said that it is terrible, but the same is often said of Fallout 3 so I can't really trust a lot of people's reviews and opinions.

Bethesda has not actually contradicted any Fallout history/lore, so hooray!

There's nothing wrong with the BoS or the Super Mutants reappearing; they did so in Fallout Tactics and New Vegas with no complaints from the community, and are well known as Fallout favourites. The problem is with focusing on them. I have no problem with some appearances, but a new main storyline would be a welcome change. (For example, I'd love to have Fawkes and Uncle Leo, the two intelligent Vault 87 Super Mutants from Fallout 3, reappear again in Fallout 4, and I'd also like to hear a mention of how the ''Outcast/Lyon's BoS'' conflict ended. But that does NOT mean I want the storyline to focus on EITHER of them.) Do not abandon the east coast for the west. The east coast can have a good history as well if it is well cared and written for in the future. Don't give up on it.

Like I said, anywhere in the US, a Mexico/Southern US mixture, or some part of Canada, is fine with me. As long as they do not leave North America, I'd have no complaints.

Those were remnants of the Master's army, not from some other source of FEV that just happened to be lying around. If it is in the New England Commonwealth then I'd be fine with some Super Mutants moving there from the Capital Wasteland but I hope there isn't just another source of FEV that is in this region, rather they just come up with something new. You don't need Super Mutants to make a Fallout game. I'd miss Deathclaws a lot more than Super Mutants if they weren't in it, I love Deathclaws.

Personally I don't want Bethesda anywhere near the West Coast.

I just finished Brotherhood of Steel, it's as bad as people say it is. It's also non-canon thankfully.
So we have come to solve every squabble in the village personally?

I never said ''bring in a new source''. Fact is, there is a new source now, from the Capital Wasteland. And if they set it in a region nearby to the CW then a few mutants, maybe a small amount, being here or there wouldn't really be a shocker. So, I'm saying ''I want to see a few Vault 87 Super Mutants again'' not ''I want to see another source of mutants''.

I didn't mention this, so I don't know why you're bringing it up. But since we're on the topic, I'd say I wouldn't mind. A Bethesda game on the West Coast might help to meld the two different styles of the two different developers together. But like I said, it makes no difference to me, East or West, either can be interesting if done correctly. (Of course, with the Fallout 1 and 2 fanbase's treatment of Fallout 3, I find it highly unlikely that Bethesda would develop any games set there, so I don't think you'd need to worry about it)

To put everything I want in a simple way; just as a Fallout 1 fan might not have wanted its events to go completely unmentioned in Fallout 2, I as a Fallout 3 fan do not want it's events to go completely unmentioned in Fallout 4.

I've been hanging around the Fallout wiki quite a bit recently - looking up and comparing the history between eras, and checking for updates - and I sometimes get into the places with comments, and some of the guys in there seem to legitimately believe that the Enclave have been in the right from the start.

At first I thought it was just jokes, but after reading through some arguments, I'm convinced these dudes actually support the Enclave's slaughter of anyone with the slightest taint of mutation. I mean they will stand by their side and come up with any excuse for them even when handed the most damning evidence. It's crazy. I can see people enjoying the faction as an idea or an antagonist, but thinking they're in the right is another matter.

I could understand supporting Autumn's plans; there's some sense in that. But standing behind the original ideas is just silly.

The Enclave are elitist morons. If they wipe out 99% of the population, they will end up inbreeding and the human race will just become inbred power armoured boy scouts. Controlling the population is a much smarter idea and Autumn had the right idea. I think he doesn't want to do anything nasty to everyone but just wants to establish some form of civilisation in a hostile wasteland. It would have been nice if we had a chance to learn more about him in Broken Steel or even work with him. Speaking of which, did the Brotherhood of Steel kill him as soon as he stepped outside if the Lone Wanderer let him live?

I think Bethesda will use the TES approach regarding Fallout 3 and NV in Fallout 4 by mentioning the odd event along with having the gender of the Lone Wanderer and Courier be ambigous. Same with the canon events.

I hope Fallout 4 will have a lot of items that we can craft. From weapons made from junk to armour. Imagine finding some broken Power Armour and using parts of it on some metal armour. Or finding some combat armour and creating a hybrid of leather and combat armour. With weapons, we could create small flame throwers, grenades with nails etc...

I would like to see more variety in combat each with their strengths and weaknesses. Currently, there is only energy weapons, guns, melee and unarmed. I would like to see Dual Wielding make an appearance with some viable drawbacks. Such as dual wielding laser pistols up your damage but you are less accurate or dualing a sword and bat will result in you burning through stamina. I would like to see a stamina stat appear as well. I would also like to see the ability to made major modifications to weapons. Such as turn a laser rifle into a weapon that is capable of acting as a railgun at the cost of all of the magazine and being very prone to breaking.

As for the location, I hope it'll be in a location that has no links to any Fallout games to allow Bethesda to create a lot of original content. If Super Mutants do appear, i do expect a very good reason instead of Vault Tec had FEV and conducted the same experiment. Same with the Brotherhood of Steel and other factions that have appeared in previous games.

Well, it's left sort of ambiguous. He does get a mention though; during the ''Two Weeks Later'' transition at the start of Broken Steel, IF you allowed Autumn to leave, you can hear Lyon's saying ''He let him go?!'' angrily in the backround, so this would hint at the truth being that Autumn *does* escape the Purifier if you allow him to do so.
