According to the Pocket Guide to the Empire, the Imperial who visited Alinor pointed out that the Altmer name each other by numbers. Any one who is not fluent in their language merely hears it as a name.
Does anyone know of a source or method of translation for the Altmer numbering system for naming purposes?

It's almost entirely certain that that was actually a falsehood. The first Pocket Guide was basically propaganda; it absolutely reeks of Cyrodiilic bias.

given the Altmer use goblins as slaves, the most likely explanation is the numeric naming refers to them, and some human scholar grabbed the wrong end of the stick.

That makes sense. I'm always careful to spot things like bias in my day to day life, but for some reason, I never expect to see it in works of fiction. The Elder Scrolls lore never ceases to amaze.
I've recently started to fall for the Altmer, and that section brought up some questionable subjects. I suppose that they also don't kill nine of the ten babies born in the Isles?... I thought that a bit... extreme.

Then is the rumor of their less-frequent reproduction true? Otherwise a race that lives that long would run into overpopulation problems in the Isles.

That one's probably true of mer in general, for precisely the reason you describe.

Re: Altmer Names - Numbering System
It's fairly safe for us to assume that is the case, because we know that Mer in the TES universe go through a similar developmental process as men do, reaching adulthood around the same age. Therefore, we might conclude that Mer also begin to lose their fertility well before they actually expire (in the same way humans, particularly women, do).tatortodd22 wrote:Then is the rumor of their less-frequent reproduction true?
