Help me to create new character and story!

Post by Street_Assassin »

I haven't played Skyrim for over half a year and I suddenly got the urge to play it again (thanks to new mods). My first play through was typical; good guy pure warrior nord becoming hero of Skyrim.Second play through I played as Redguard assassin. Third play through I played as greedy vampire high elf that was pure mage. Never quite finished the game as I got tired with old characters so that explains playing the game 3 times.
Now I need help to decide what race should I choose, what guilds to join and do something differently than I did before to keep me playing! If your play through is interesting let me know, anything goes! The more ideas the better

Apathetic Imperial chick who is playful 90% of the time, until the fight get serious. Then she doesn't get angry. She gets Terminator-y.
Baurus: Our job is to get the Emperor out of situations like this. Though I'll admit, things aren't going exactly to plan.

Casandra: At the moment, the deadliest weapon at my disposal is a goblin's head on a stick. I'd be worried if this was the plan.

I have a Dunmer underworld-kingpin.
Started thieving to raise some funds, until he heard about the Thieves guild.
His increased sneak skills got him the attention of the dark brotherhood.
Having risen to the top in both organizations, he's basically the king of criminal Skyrim :)
Before fighting an enemy, he'd try to sneak kill them or steal any useful equipment off his victims to make the fight easier.

On the other hand there's a virtuous Imperial mage that does not kill unless in self-defense and does not steal or loot.
The only acceptable thing to do is harvest plants in the wilderness. Alchemy and selling transmuted (bought) ore are the main source of income.
Wanting to hone her magic skills, she enlisted in the College and later on rose in the ranks of the imperial legion to unify skyrim against the dragon threat.

I enjoyed playing a Breton mercenary "trickster". One-handed melee, light armor, heavy Illusion use, archery or Destruction for long-range attacks. And, of course, high speech skill from selling all that loot. I ruined that character by too broad skill base and wrong perk emphasis, but up until level 20 or so he was fun to play. Choosing the most dickish dialogue options most of the time and using intimidation as the main "persuade" option was fun too. He sure was a surly [&@%!]. Plus, there was no shortage of quests, roleplay-wise, since what mercenary won't jump at a chance to make some coin? Only the really evil quests were off-limits for that guy.

One could make this kind of roguish character work better than my attempt by concentrating on Illusion more, and choosing only either magic or archery for the ranged attack. Now that I think of it, I might actually try that build for my next char.

Two character types that I like are the heavy archer and the sorcerer. The Heavy archer is an archery focused character that uses heavy armor as opposed to light armor that most typical archers use. The other main difference to a standard archer type is that they never sneak, they always stand their ground and can take a hit when enemies get to close. This means no sneaking bonuses but that's not usually an issue. Even when an enemy runs at right up at you you don't back track from them shooting and trying to keep distance. That is how the normal archer build would play, with this heavy archer you stand your ground and if necessary block-bash with your bow/crossbow. The character has a tough-guy or badass type attitude so playing as a bulky Orc or Nord would suit the character best and gives you a look at their personality. If you have some free perks its nice to invest in speech as to allow you to use the intimidation option in dialogue where-ever possible.

The sorcerer character is basically a mage that is played somewhat mysteriously always looking for more power. The main difference from a standard mage is that they use heavy armor instead of robes. To better emphasis this you would actually use a shield and take block as a main skill along with heavy armor. Basically they carry a shield in their left hand and use magic in the right instead of a weapon. Destruction is an obvious choice for damage but conjuration is also nice as a backup. The sorcerer is a mysterious character and will meddle in strange and unknown magic in a never ending hunt to obtain greater power, always looking to collect and horde powerful artefacts. Enchanting is another skill that fits this characters personality.

Both of these builds depend on you getting in the right mindset to play them. Especially the heavy archer as a big part of the fun is developing the mental toughness to resist the urge to back-pedal from enemies and stand your ground when a bandit chief with a two-handed weapon is trying to pummel your face off.

Anyway hope these help and good luck if you decide to try one.
I'm on my way to Windhelm to join up with the Stormcloaks, Ulfric has the right of it!

Khaajiti Prince, last of a line of despots, exiled in a most inhospitable land

initially a fight for survival in a society which hates his kind, his career develops and gains direction as he rises in the thieves guild, learning the ways of skyrims underworld. Opportunities present themselves, now an assassin he becomes a killer of emperors, yet he joins the Empire and defeats the Nord rebels, advancing an old ally to the ruling seat in Riften.

Slowly he gathers his allies, no one knows his face yet one by one he rules all of the major powers in Skyrim, making deals with gods and demons alike, learning to call dragons and the secret of immortality - and finally is master of all he surveys

I see your on a PC so that helps since you can use mods. Its hard to role play when you stuck with the same start over and over again. To avoid this you might consider using Alternate Start - Live Another Life by Arthmoor.

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/9557/?

This will allow you to pick a start besides as a prisoner on your way to Helgen to get executed. You can ignore even starting the main quest if you like. Just be aware some of the other quest lines and some interaction with Balgruuf will end up requiring you to start the main quest. When that happens you can do it up Dragon Rising and then ignore it again. Just like you can in a vanilla start.

The beauty of the LAL mod is you can start out as anything you want. Member of one of the guilds, a property owner, in the military, a new immigrant to Skyrim, attacked and left for dead in the middle of nowhere, etc. There are even options for specific races.

I like to pick a theme for my characters story line. In the past I have characters with a stated goal.

I had a Nord who hated Mercer Frey with a vengeance with a back story to explain it. She naturally was aimed at doing the Thieves Guild quest line with a few tasks I set for her before starting TG.

Then there was another Nord whose family were all miners and mining was in her blood. This character had the goal of visiting every mine around Skyrim and was running a business that advised mine owners, helped with pests infesting the mines, etc.

My latest was a Imperial who started out in the Legion during the Civil War. I have yet to decide where I am going to go with her once the war is over.

I have a few more ideas floating around I have not done yet.

A Bosmer assassin type. While the character fully agrees some people need to die, they do not agree with worshiping Sithis and and taking gold for killing random people. There has to be a good reason to kill some one. This idea could go two ways. Wipe out the Dark Brotherhood, or try to reform it from within.

A Altmer who is melee based due to a curse that makes it physically and mentally painful to use magic. This Altmer would find a home with the Companions after being outcast by their family and shunned by other Altmer.

A Breton Spell Sword that got fed up with the infighting among the Foresworn and looks to clear their records and then join the Mages Collage. With LAL you can start as a Foresworn if your a Breton.

LAL has a start just for Orcs as well. You begin in Dushnikh Yal with a full set of Orcish armor. You could then decide why your character is leaving the Stronghold and build a story on that.

this are really good ideas. i know about the mod but havent used it yet. can you set it to be completely random? (choosing race/story/guilds/city for you)

You have to pick the race yourself, everything else can be random. Just be aware that one of the starts is the vanilla start so you might get that on a random roll. But you can refine it a bit. Most of the categories let you pick a random start from just that category. For example, you can pick to start as a member of one of the guilds. Then choose to make it a random selection of just which guild you end up joining.
