I don't know, I think it was trying to set a theme for the place, but I'm not sure.

They were sort of out-of-place regardless.

Any other versions?

I've heard tell that the Master of Laketown, as played by Stephen fry, looks mighty like Governor Ratcliffe from Disney's Pocahontas:

Just got back from seeing Desolation of Smaug! I don't really feel like comparing it with the first one, since it has after all been a year since I saw it, but I will say that I did enjoy this one a lot. The barrel sequence was surprisingly exciting and fun to watch, even though I kept thinking, "Where are all these orcs coming from?!".

One thing I'm unsure about regarding the upcoming Part 3
Spoiler:
is how they'll wrap up the weird romance subplot with Tauriel and Kili, especially knowing Kili's eventual fate from the book.
Start the groove.

Just saw the Desolation of Smaug today and I must say I am not liking the whole Tauriel-business. I for one think that they didn't need to include a strong independent female character and change the story and add some love between one of the dwarves and the elf... as far as I recall, in the book all the dwarves go to the Lonely Mountain with Thorin & co. I also found the whole Beorn part to be way too short and where was the dialogue about the Carrock? Hopefully this is included in the extended version.
That being said, it was great movie and I am looking forward to the next one.

I noticed that there’s a moment where Thorin is claiming that he is not like his grandfather while standing next to a gigantic stone Dwarven image whose nose is shaped exactly like his. Image
So I made some quick fan art for it:

10/10 for effort, 7/10 story, my arse went numb a half hour before the end which probably means i will enjoy the boxed set dvd more when i get it as a gift in Christmas 2015 - i will have the ability to skip the Tauriel/Kili scenes then
Spoiler:
i thought this was about as good as the first. I was in a group with a few others ( a mix of younger, older, JRRT fans and people who don't know nothing about Hobbits) who found it harder to follow, saying the action essentially replaced the plot. The general concensus was the bits most like the book were better put together. Bjorn was short changed yes, but Jackson is making "Peter Jackson's JRR Tolkein's The Hobbit: a prelude to LOTR", and not "the Hobbit", a book i read when I was 11

I liked the laketown shenanigans with Bard and Stephen Fry, the book describes this situation in a page or so but the movie elaborated in a logical and reasonable way, much like the stuff with Boromir and Faramir (and Denethor) in LOTR. This was an example of where the new bits were good for the story

Smaug bit at the end was completely OTT and unbelievable but probably what people want in an Xmas blockbuster

I still think Peter Jackson has become the Man Vs Food film maker of our generation. Why have one double cheese burger topped with braised pork and pickle, dunked in gravy, with a side of slaw, when you can try and down 10 of them in one sitting to win a T shirt and have your face on the wall forever.. is it art? i dunno but bigger must be better and i can't wait for the battle of 5 (or will it be 6 or 7) armies next Christmas

Comparing a painting and a movie isn't really fair. Especially when the painting looks like nothing that could exist in reality. I suppose the author of that article was happier with the animated version of The Hobbit?

LOTR the movies drew significantly from paintings by Alan Lee, PJ managed to keep to them pretty well

if people read LOTR they will see where Jackson is coming from

If they read the Hobbit not so
Spoiler:
Jackson wants to make an epic out of everything and in the Hobbit you lose something. I was excited when i found out Del Toro was directing because his style is as vibrant and epic as Jackson's, but he would have told the story in a less obvious "prequel in a 6 disc boxed set" sort of way. I actually don't mind the source material of any of my fave books/music/films/shows being embellished and changed, but improve on it for [&@%!] sake
just a taste thing, you understand..

I too was very happy when Del Toro was announced as director! I love his work from Pan's Labyrinth, Devil's Backbone, Hellboy 1 & 2, Blade 2, even Pacific Rim and Mama were chock full of interesting imagery. I was especially excited to see what his Smaug was going to look like, as he said it was unlike any dragon design that had come before. Alas, it was not to be.

And I agree that Jackson is making "Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: A Prologue to Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings", but I think for what it is it's pretty darn good.

To jackson's credit, IMO Smaug was the most memorable movie Dragon I have ever seen. I think he did fine there

btw, whats this about Del Toro?

he worked on the script for a while and then it was decided (not sure who or why but i am sure the internet knows) Jackson would make the movie. Del Toro has a credit as a co writer or producer or something in these films
Spoiler:
DT he made a film about the ghost of a boy, it starts off as the ghost is the monster but as you watch the movie you realise the ghost is the victim and the living are the monsters. The way he dealt with that in particular i thought would have been perfect for Gollum, and of course Pans Labyrinth we all know about. Del Toro is great at giving us a child's eye view with adult depth

Bumping this thread to complain about how terrible the THIRD hobbit is. I'm no purist, haven't read the book in a decade, I don't care about high fps or anything. It's just a plain terrible movie.

Tons of the imagery feels like a straight up skyrim cutscene.
