That's funny, Alexander and Askia are always quite cordial with me, I don't think I've ever had either of them declare war on me in over 150 hours of gameplay.

What difficulty do you play? It also could be that you've never been in a situation that they'd have a problem with you.Derp53 wrote:That's funny, Alexander and Askia are always quite cordial with me, I don't think I've ever had either of them declare war on me in over 150 hours of gameplay.

Normally I play on prince level difficulty, also by the time they're steamrolling everyone I'm a tech level ahead of them with armies around all my cities and siege machines with range over my countryside.Kestral wrote:What difficulty do you play? Not sure how determined you are with whatever the game gives you but I'd consider spawning as Venice beside the Zulus part of the RNG charm of the game. lol *restart*Kestral wrote:Shaka Zulu, if I can sum up my feeling about Shaka in one sentence, it's this: [&@%!] Shaka Zulu. Here's a screenshot of what getting Shaka'd is like. Note the lowly, non-expansive by restriciton, and peaceful Venetians. It's turn 80 and Shaka already has 3 visible cities (and you know he has more undiscovered cities). In addition to all of his cities, Shaka has a great general and an entire army to boot. Shaka does one of two things in his game: 1. Build Settler or 2. Build Warriors. The fact that Shaka's ikandas give his units special promotions, the fact that Impi are total BS units, and the fact that Shaka is constantly expanding and warmongering just make Shaka intolerable. No one likes Shaka, no one is ever friends with Shaka, but everyone gets [&@%!] by Shaka. I have not seen one game where Shaka was taken out by an AI, I have also not seen one game where Shaka doesn't grow like a tumor. Remember how Hiawatha settles in bad locations? Shaka settles in worse. Shaka would take in territory with 5 tiles of snow and 4 tiles of ice and call it home. Shaka just sucks and if he's in a position where he can kill everyone, god help you.
The only time I've fared decently vs him was when I tried Japan after the (most recent?) patch that gave them +Culture to fishing boats, I got a nice start and 'allied' with him against Poland.
Was on King I think, date on the screenshot is Oct 13th.

It's not hard to eliminate him with any civ that isn't venice really, once you get musketmen and some kind of ranged naval vessel that's all the advantage you need. The Dog Whisperer wrote:Not sure how determined you are with whatever the game gives you but I'd consider spawning as Venice beside the Zulus part of the RNG charm of the game. lol *restart*Kestral wrote:Shaka Zulu, if I can sum up my feeling about Shaka in one sentence, it's this: [&@%!] Shaka Zulu. Re: SID MEIER'S SID MEIER
Goddammit. Can't I just play a nice, peaceful, culture victory game? Do my two neighbors(who have large armies, mind) HAVE to go to war with me AT THE SAME TIME for the sole reason that they covet land I own? I'm not aggressive, I'm not expansionist. Can't we all just get along?
EDIT: I was Ramkhamhaeng, they were Augustus and Gustavus, and I quit before any fighting happened since I knew 100% they'd completely steamroll me.

I'm considering picking up Brave New World for the 15 bucks. Seems like a decent deal, since everybody has been saying it's really good and I haven't seen it for much cheaper than that.

I got it and all those other trinkets in the Humble Bundle, and wow, BNW really changes things.
Playing as Venice is definitely a new angle on the game. Different sort of challenge that I hadn't experienced.

Trying a peaceful, religion focused game. Find out I'm on a continent with Shaka, Montezuma, and Haile Selassie. Oh, hello, restart button.

Well, it's based thoroughly on a concept that may be unfamiliar to you. Last I heard, that concept was something called "humor".

Good point, but the unhappiness could probably be replaced and/or buffed.

Re: SID MEIER'S SID MEIER
Yeah, I'd say it'd be the best to start out with. Especially a good introduction into the series if you're not a strategy kind of guy (yet).
Then, once you like the genre, you can get into the more advanced stuff, like Europa Universalis and Crusader Kings.

Re: SID MEIER'S SID MEIER
I'm having an issue with with how many military units I should keep in reserve, I either have too many or too little, any advice?

Re: SID MEIER'S SID MEIER
I usually dismiss siege units when not at war, and then pump them out when I am expecting an attack or have had war declared on me. I'd also recommend only keeping units at choke points near where your borders make contact with other civs. Don't overpopulate the borders though, or get too close, the AI hates that, and it's a waste to [&@%!] your borders anyways, if you're not at war.
Re: SID MEIER'S SID MEIER
Civ 5 is the only Civilization games I've ever played and I totally love it.
Some leaders are really jerks such as Alexander, Shaka, Attila etc. Alexander using his UA so effective, becoming ally of all CS'. He also steals your ally CS' too. And, Shaka and Attila may attack you even when they act "friendly" towards you.

Makes sense, but what about artillery? Normally I try to have one artillery or ranged unit in all major cities.VirtualWeasel wrote:I usually dismiss siege units when not at war, and then pump them out when I am expecting an attack or have had war declared on me. Re: SID MEIER'S SID MEIER
I keep ranged units on hill forts at choke points. I usually garrison pikemen/landschnekts/later equivalents in my cities, just as a reserve.
It really comes down to having a spy on your neighboring cities every now and then to make sure they're not plotting against you, as well as how fast you can pump out a military force. Just yesterday I killed off the Celts after they attacked me, and I had one warrior to begin with. By the time I was ready to take Dublin, I had a full siege army, an era ahead of theirs. In the same game I took down Alexander's capital with 4 units that I just kept rotating as they got killed. So, really, just keep a high-production city always producing units during wartime. You can always build improvements after it's over.

Re: SID MEIER'S SID MEIER
That works, I see the strategy behind it, but what about happiness levels? I normally like to fight long protracted wars with several large armies. Normally I use three armies and coordinate on three fronts, set up two and ambush or flank.
