follower face down on ground, still talking and following

I went out giant hunting with Serana. In the fight, she got laid low and I retreated to restore health.

As I retreated, Serana's body, still face down on the ground, slid right behind me. After "dragging" her out of range of the giants, I found I could talk to her, so she was alive, but she would not revive and stand up. Though I have seen followers drop to their knees drained of health, then recover, this dead-but-not-dead scenario is new.

Since I couldn't get her into action, I decided to see if the giants could, so I went to sneaking, dragged Serana close to the giants so they could find her, 10 feet away from me. When they found her, they immediately attacked her (not seeing me) and ka_BOOM, she pops right up and resumes fighting.

So what she needed was a stone hammer upside the head!

This occasionally happens to other NPCs for me, but it has never happened to a follower. It's certainly a bizarre phenomenon...

I think Mauin actually had something like this happen with one of the caravan Khajiit. She posted a video of it on YouTube. Was pretty amusing to watch her being chased by a corpse...

I did, yeah. He didn't get back up after I accidentally Shouted at him, though. The only thing that got him back onto his feet was the resurrect command. I just loaded my save and he was like that... No idea how it happened (although it may have had something to do with all the dead Dragons nearby). Probably one of the weirdest things I've witnessed in my 2300+ hours of Skyrim.

AFAIK, the only way to kill a follower is to do it yourself, which I did accidentally in a melee.

The give away that the follower wasn't dead in this case was my ability to talk to her.

Have you tried waiting or fast travelling? as it may fix it as the game may think they are dead but at teh same time, knows it is alive and is just confused.
