The real problem for me is how the orcs are not real people, the makeup in the lord of the rings movies was fantastic.

That said I loved the movie and they did a great job.

The only orc that wasn't real was Azog. Maybe you're thinking of the goblins?

I'm pretty sure the orc were people in the same makeup as the first trilogy. The trolls and the goblins, however, were CGI. Very good CGI, but CGI.

In Tolkien's Letters he reveals that the terms orc and goblin are interchangable - the term goblin was used more often in the hobbit than orc because children would be more familiar with the term ... the two are the same, as far as The Hobbit is concerned

Just saw The Desolation of Smaug last night!

Much more action than the first part of this trilogy. They've also added a few things (Taruiel being one of them) that were not in any of the books. One scene in particular made me want to go back and read the appendices for Lord of the Rings just to see if the timeline matches up or if they took liberties with that as well.

Overall I was pleased with it and thought it was a really good movie. The 48fps made everything really pop, too.

Anybody else see it yet? What did you think?

The films would be better as one movie. They even added filler scenes in the first movie, as to make it longer. The Hobbit is far shorter than most of the Harry Potter books, and all those were crammed into a single movie, except the last, which also contained pointless filler scenes.

The filler scenes this time around help tie this trilogy to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, so I don't mind it too much.

Not the same as the book. Tolkien did modify the Hobbit to fit the Lord of the Rings, but not in the way the movie depicts. Also, the beginning scene with the Dwarves visiting Bilbo was far too long for the movie.

I believe he is adding some things from the Lord of the Rings Appendices and making some stuff up on his own to try and make it pertinent to the previous trilogy. Because as it stands The Hobbit (the book) has very loose ties with The Lord of the Rings, mainly the One Ring and Bilbo.

Heh. That was my favourite bit.

That nonsense running about with goblins didn't half drag, though. Far too many instances of people going 'Woooaaaah!', too.

my favourite part was the beginning as well, it set the mood very faithfully imo

i dont mind all the extra bits even where he takes a few liberties and makes some educated guesses , but i am tired and bored of the bigger is better style Peter Jackson treatment (first seen in King Kong), and those goblin caves in the hobbit were not much more than "Lego: the Hobbit" adverts

in the book the dwarves have a terrible battle with spiders and only Bilbo has a weapon of any use as the dwarves have to make do with their knives, in the movie they will no doubt (?we'll see - i could be wrong) be all tooled up like marines clearing out an aliens nest. It's a sign of our times i suppose, this is the hobbit for the 21st century audience

I am enjoying it though but am wary of changes and additions which don't add to the experience

He should do the silmarillion after this, the Fall of Gondolin was made for Jackson. There would be work for Orlando Bloom as Legolas in that as well, if my memory serves

Spider battle spoilers
Spoiler:
They are pretty faithful to the book. Bilbo is the only one with a "sword" at the beginning and draws first blood...do spider have blood? The dwarves have to make do with whatever they have at hand, which is a sword for Thorin (of course), but there are a few good unarmed spider kills.
:
When the elves show up they are like the Marines, taking out the spiders with ease. I loved watching the elves fight, as all their motions were so fluid. One move went straight into the next, almost never was there just a "elf blocks his sword strike with his own sword" it was always something like "elf parries sword strike with his bow while spinning and ducking to come up behind the orc and kill him".

Spoiler:
Needless to say I was rather PO'ed about where they left the story in this one just because I want to see the end of the Smaug storyline so much. The 3rd movie is going to be LONG. They still have to finish Smaug and there is also the battle of the three armies, and I'd imagine they are going to go more into Sauron's rise.
I do really, really like the adds by Jackson with the Dol Guldur storyline. The scene with Sauron sent shivers down my spine.

btw Benedict Cumbersmaug deserves an award. He nailed everything I was hoping Smaug's voice would be like. Now I want to hear it in Imax

No it wouldn't. Most of the time, movies that are made from books suck for this very reason. They try to cram everything into one movie and it blows. This is why the Harry Potter fims were horrible.

Apart from the cringe worthy forcing of an apparent love relationship with one of the dwarves, she was good

This pretty much. I enjoyed her character and she was well acted, both by Kate Evangeline Lilly and her stunt double. Her action was some of the best in the movie.

Went to see it yesterday. I loved it! I liked it much more than the first one, for some reason it felt much more like 'LOTR' to me. Stephen Fry was a highlight for me. Very minor role, but I loved him in it. [&@%!] that ending though, but it seems we'll have to wait another year. :(

Would you people recommend it? Especially to someone not happy with the first one?

Yes. The first was a plodding mess imho. In this one there really wasn't a moment where I thought "when is this going to be over?"

I felt they could get Smaug wrong because he had a speaking part instead of just the typical "RAWR I EAT U" you'd expect of a dragon. His dialogue with Biblo was so fun to watch.

Smaug was more impressive than I'd imagined, and Cumberbatch was freaking perfect in the role. In fact, he kind of stole the entire movie from the moment he came on screen. My only disappointment with how they implemented smaug is they made him a Wyvern type dragon instead of the four legged western style I was hoping for.

and I agree with Music, I actually didn't want this one to be over :D

I actually saw this today/other day. I won't go into details, but I loved it.

Smaug is SOO well animated, and he is both fun and scary to watch. I actually can't wait for the next movie!
