Something weird with MGSO
So, I've tried installing the MGSO mod, but there's something very weird with it. In the installer I've set the setting to the max (can't remember if it's very high the name of the best setting). The game is looking amazing. But, my perfomance suffered a lot, it's running at 15fps. I don't think it's related to my computer config, it's an Asus Laptop, model K45VM (https://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/K45VM/): I7 3610QM 2.3ghz, 8gb RAM DDR3, Geforce 630M 2GB. It should be able to work right? Even if I lower the setting to medium in the installer I still get this bad perfomance...

Same here. I just assumed because it was pushing the graphics up so much and adding so many new meshes and textures that that was normal. Is it not?
Now that I think about it, Skyrim runs better than Morrowind with the mod. That shouldn't be happening.

Exactly musicman, I think that's what happens when you mess too much with a game that old. I run skyrim easily at 60fps inside dungeons with settings at ultra.

Re: Something weird with MGSO
I had this problem with my DELL. I'm not sure if this solution applies to your computer (i didn't check its specifications) but it may help some other people. Morrowind with MGSO was very laggy for me as well, even on medium. My Dell laptop uses Intel graphics or GeForce, depending on the situation. It's supposed to use GeForce for games but... when I turned on Nvidia settings and accessed application settings, I noticed that Morrowind uses Intel by default. I changed it to GeForce and voila - it works fine.

This often happens when Distant Lands view distance is maxed. Try resetting to a shorter view distance.

Re: Something weird with MGSO
Morrowind was never optimised for multiple CPUs/multiple cores, so no matter how many your machine has, it can't really benefit from them. That's why Morrowind doesn't run as well as you'd expect on newer machines.
Distant Land is probably the biggest drain that MGSO adds, but the new water effects, as well as the lighting and HDR bloom effects, can also be quite intensive. Most of the new textures, however, are fairly safe to run without fear of any sort of hit to your performance. It may be worth turning off, or at least toning down, some of those features. What settings are you on currently/did you select when you installed MGSO? Did you put everything to max, and what did you choose for the options (such as foliage) where it gives you different variants rather than min to max? This thread might also be worth checking out.

Re: Something weird with MGSO
In my installation of MGSO, I just had to turn off all the shaders. Some of them have effects I don't like, some of them I did like, but with any of them enabled at all, my game is so slow it's basically unplayable.
I can't remember offhand where in the MGEgui or MGSO Options the shaders are, so unfortunately I can't tell you where to go to turn them off, but I know it's something I was able to do myself (as opposed to how Distant Land asks you to automate the settings and it takes over your computer for a minute).

Re: Something weird with MGSO
In my case running MGSO on Very Fast settings only got me 5 FPS outside, so I fired up task manager and GPU-Z and found my CPU is maxed out but my GPU only runs around 60%, So I needed to find out what was using the CPU. I've got an Athalon II X2 270 processor, an Nvidia 9800 video card, and 8 GB of RAM if you want to compare.
I disabled all but four shaders and it ran about 15 FPS.
I couldn't figure out how to turn off distant lands while keeping MGE XE running (I'd get an error saying MGE XE can't run with Distant Lands turned off).
So I set the Distant lands view distance to 1 and that brought my outdoor framerate to 25 outdoors.
Finally, turning off the shadows has my outdoor framerate at around 40 when I'm away from towns.
In towns it is still 20, but I'm also running MCA v7, COM v2, Starfire's NPC's additions, and Animated Morrowind so there are tons of people running around in the towns.
It definitely seems like the game is maxed out with this mod, as others said.
I'd love to hear if anybody knows what settings specifically run on the CPU so I can reduce the load on it. Hope I could help a bit.
