Kerr: You do realize that "Indian Opinion " was published to help FIGHT racial descrimination in South Africa, yes? If he was such a racist, why did other civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King, and Nelson Mandela, himself, use some of his writings and speeches?

He cared about racial discrimination against Indians. As said, I still think he's a good person.

Oh, Canada.
I did an elective this semester that was about Canada. It was called Canadian Studies, originally enough.

Re: General Discussion
No, Nathan Fillion is, obviously. We did culture, history, politics, geography, First Nations, Quebec and the whole separation movement, Rob Ford taking loads of drugs, day to day living, etc. Wide range of study. I liked it a lot. Did my final essay for the course on "Canada: Survival and Isolation". Was kind of tempted to mention Bioware in it, but I would just be shoehorning them in. So hopefully when I make that Fallout RP set in Canada I don't screw it up.
It's funny, I was doing Canadian Studies here in Ireland while my cousin in Toronto is doing Irish Studies.
I suppose Ireland is similar to Canada in the whole being next to a better known English speaking country with a larger population. New Zealand is like that too.

Re: General Discussion
Oh yes, Rob Ford, our new international icon. He's a great ambassador for Toronto and the country as a whole.
And as for my hero, it's got to be Tim Horton, hands down. Where would we go for coffee and doughnuts if not for him? (Not to mention his first store was opened in the city where I live. And he played on the Maple Leafs' last Stanley-Cup-winning team.)

Re: General Discussion
This is simply not the case. Indian independence was his priority because those were his countrymen, just like Nelson Mandela gave his life's work towards helping his countrymen. By the way, racist and good person don't belong in the same sentence.Knight Captain Kerr wrote:He cared about racial discrimination against Indians. As said, I still think he's a good person.

Re: General Discussion
No, you're right, racist and good person probably don't belong in the same sentence. He wasn't bad if judged by the standards of his time and he did a lot of good things. By modern standards, not as much. When I say "Racism is wrong" I don't mean it is just wrong now, I mean it was wrong even when it was tolerated. Abraham Lincoln didn't exactly see black people as equals either. Didn't want them getting citizenship, being in office, intermarrying. But by the standards of his time he was pretty progressive. Kind of sad really, but that's what history is like.

Re: General Discussion
A country gained independence because of his efforts. How is that not doing much? Ghandi is one of the best examples of a statesman in history. His methods were used by others trying to achieve similar causes. There is nothing in any literature I have ever read on Ghandi that verifies he was a racist. This is the first I've heard of it.Knight Captain Kerr wrote: he did a lot of good things. By modern standards, not as much.

Re: General Discussion
Well, only a few of my friends ever were into wrestling, and that was a few years back so I haven't heard much about the sport in general for quite a while. But back in the days when I would constantly hear them talking about it, I think I might have heard him mentioned a few times.HatofMadness wrote:Do people in canada talk about Bret Hart at all these days?

Re: General Discussion
Okay, that was poor wording on my part. Ghandi did a damn lot of good. He made great strides in politics and the use of non-violence. Without doubt he did more good than bad. I didn't know anything about his possible racism until a few years ago. I've seen quotes of Ghandi saying things that would be questionable these days but wouldn't be at the time. I would definitely prefer if those sources were wrong (which they could be.) Would remove any mixed feelings I have about the man. If they are right, they would largely be a product of societal norms.
Anyway, I would prefer to just end this argument now rather than it dragging on indefinitely.

So we are having tidal surges over here in England. It's the East coast and the north mainly. Scotland is due to have a lot of snow so yeah, the weather is trying to kick our arse. And so far, i think it's succeeded in parts of England.
