i enjoyed it a lot, the series now has a purpose :-)

it also explains why, despite the doc previously having destroyed all daleks forever , they still popped up every incarnation at least once lol

Also, has anyone else seen An Adventure in Space and Time? I watched it today, I have to admit- it was really moving actually.

Very nice episode, and the 3D was great!

Makes me want to watch the original series now.
Spoiler:
I loved the moment in the Tower when Hurt asked the other two about why they were young and what they were running from. Great moment, and a great lead-in to an older Doctor!

Anniversary special thoughts:
Spoiler:
Multiple-doctor episodes are always my favourite - I love watching different incarnations of the Doctor irritate himself. I like what they did with Billie Piper, actually. I was afraid they were going to bring her back straight on as Rose Tyler.

I thought what they did with the footage from the original series was really well done, and it's great that they're starting to acknowledge the older series more often.

i wonder if doc Hurt will now be inundated with sonic screwdriver calculation requests from future doctors now?

and how many can it cope with at a time?

I think that's something that will only work on an anniversary episode, when you have a younger and older Doctor together at the same time.

John Hurt is the new front-runner for my favourite Doctor now, overtaking McCoy and Smith. Controversial, choices, I know... I will admit that Smith's Doctor can push the manic/nutty thing a bit far, but I always figured it was the rather forced, strained jollity of someone who doesn't want to let their mind settle on something. The mental equivalent of fidgeting about because your feet hurt or you need the toilet.
I'm looking forward to an older Doctor after christmas, though. Back to the glory days of Hartnell and Pertwee, eh?
I just wish we had the chance to see more of the War Doctor; tired, haggard, shell-shocked and yet witty and sharp as a tack. That's a man whose life is worth seeing. Also, he has the best catchphrase:

Gallifrey stands!
“There is nothing left to watch but fire and the night: circle within circle, light within light.”

So whatever happened to
Spoiler:
The Doctor entering his own time stream? They never really explained what happened. He seems to have escaped somehow without killing himself. I thought the impetus for the Doctors meeting would be him traveling his own timeline, but it wasn't. Any thoughts?

yeah i wondered about that
Spoiler:
unless he actually hasn't escaped and the repercussions are yet to be felt

after all, the 13th doc was there which you might speculate means at the time of the events in this anniversary episode, Matt Smith doc has died (in a paradoxical and non linear sort of Whovian way). A bit like when Zaphod B says yeah I am dead, I just haven't stopped moving yet - to mis-quote a past DW scriptwriter

Yeah, they did just skip over what happened at the end of the last series. They acted like it would have huge impact but then it didn't.
Spoiler:
The excuse for getting rid of Amy and Rory was stupid. I don't have a problem getting rid of them despite how much I liked them, but the reason was just kind of silly. They probably should have just died after jumping off the roof. Would a couple dying in a suicide pact be a bit dark for a Family Show? Maybe, but Doctor Who has been pretty dark before. Ever see the ending of the 5th Doctor serial Earthshock?

Maybe the Doctor will actually die with the next doctor. Then have his grave in the TARDIS set up and everything. Then somehow come back to life after it. It is that or know that inevitably he is going to die and be buried there. Or maybe not.

Wonder if/how the Valeyard is going to play into stuff in the future.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the anniversary episode takes place before that happens.
Then again, continuity hasn't exactly been a strong point for the latest seasons, so who knows? They could just as well just throw out some hand wavy explanation and pretend it makes sense.

Hmmm. At the end of the anniversary episode
Spoiler:
11 tells 10 that he has to go to Trenzalore, where he dies and is buried, which as far as I know was only revealed in "The Name Of The Doctor".
Also in "The Name Of The Doctor"
Spoiler:
Clara asks who the War Doctor is, which if it happened after the Anniversary episode she would have known.

"A bit of a mess" could describe a lot of Doctor Who continuity new and old. Although Moffat's hole in time everyone forgets Aliens thing in series 5 wasn't that bad of an idea, because otherwise you would have to question how anyone could be stupid enough to not believe in Aliens after everything that has happened. Of course they also could have continued with a world that knows they aren't alone. There also haven't been much references to big things in Torchwood like nobody dying for months but whatever. I'm fine with the 50th

wrapping up the Time War arc. Sure it was somewhat of a retcon but it was a pretty well done one. Still I do hope they keep with each series having an overarching story with stand alone episodes, I like that approach.

I found the whole anniversary episode to be underwhelming. Sure, they're supposedly dealing with enormous things but it never felt like it.
Spoiler:
For something so game changing it just fell flat for me. The whole "13 Doctors" bit was epic but it almost felt as though they figured we wouldn't notice how mediocre the rest was if they put a big shiny thing at the end.

And the way they wrote Elizabeth was just cringe worthy.

Yeah Elizabeth wasn't that well done. But I'm glad they at least did something with that scene in the Shakespeare episode where Elizabeth was furious with 10. Also, if she could kill a Zygon by stabbing it why don't UNIT just shoot them? I know shooting the Aliens almost never works but you can try before resorting to blowing up London.
I would be fine with a non-white and/or non-male Doctor. To me it doesn't matter what race or sex the Doctor is. But the best argument I've heard against female is that Moffat isn't very good at writing female characters. Not sure why he's so bad, it's basically the same as writing male characters.

Probably because he's a sexist guy who completely fails to see that he's sexist. I really hope they kick him off the show as soon as possible..

I did like Amy but hopefully we'll never see River again.

I wish he would stop with the: "People think they're gay. But they're not gay! Uh, not that there's anything wrong with that." jokes on Doctor Who and Sherlock already. He's done tonnes of them and they're more awkward than anything else.

Rory and Jack are two of my favourite companions. I liked Rory more than Amy but as said, I liked them both together.

I thought in the Christmas special that Clara would be a companion who wasn't from modern earth but alas, it was not to be.

Spoiler:
I saw the ending coming in Time of the Doctor. Was expecting the Timelords to return, not just to give him 13 more regeneratons. And the regeneration energy being used to destroy the daleks was a bit far fetched. Would have been nice to see the Timelords return and have them become a part a regular part of Dr Who. Or even have the Doctor trying to prevent a new Time War. Was a bit disappointed that a dalek didn't cause Smith to regenerate. And that the daleks didn't fight the cybermen. Or that all hell broke loose above Trenzalore. Liked how Capaldi make his debut and mentioned the colour of his kidneys instead of new hair. And forgetting how to fly the Tardis. Shame we didn't have half of the special with Smith and the other half with the new doctor.

Spoiler:
It was alright. I'm not fond of having explosive regenerations, seems, impractical. One Time Lord starts regenerating and the whole group near them will be doing it too. It was better than 10's regeneration episodes, they were kind of bad. Hopefully they do more with the Time Lords this time. Oh, this means the Master can show up again. This sorts out that whole Regeneration limit thing, glad it wasn't just ignored. I wonder if anyone will ever go: "You look exactly like that civil servant. What was his name? John Frobisher. Yeah. Seriously, it's uncanny." Also Time Lord ageing is weird. 200 years? Look the same. 300 years? Now you're like Guy Pearce in Prometheus.

What I'm most disappointed by with the closing of the Matt Smith era is the lack of Jack. Anyway, have to see what Capaldi will be like come next season. I'm confident he'll be fine, but I'm not that fond of Clara. I would have preferred if they had her be the Victorian Era version, a companion out of touch with modern times would be nice as opposed to nothing but "Female Human from Present Day Britain." Or they could have had her as a Dalek, that would be interesting.

Hopefully there'll be no more River.
With New Years coming up you could watch a New Years themed Doctor Who Adventure. The TV Movie. It isn't very good, but McGann is great in it. McCoy is good too, for the part he is in it.
