Smith is an excellent doctor although he does go overboard with giant manchild Doctor at times. That and the amount of crap he is given to work with. Not seen the Mcgann Doctor. Think i've seen one of the [&@%!] Dr Who Films which is ignored by fans due to it showing the Doctor as a bloke that built a time machine in his back garden.

I love that mini-episode with the 8th Doctor, I only wish they made it longer (or better yet, gave McGann a one season long spin-off ;) ).

And a while ago I realized that my nephew's birthday is on the 23rd. He's only 2, so he doesn't know anything about Doctor Who yet, but he most definitely will, as soon as he's old enough for some scary stuff. And he's getting a tiny bow-tie from his aunt, because the kid should learn early on that bow-ties are cool. :D

I enjoyed it. Was a bit of a letdown due to the way they killed him off but seeing as he only got a film and that, i'm not complaining.
Spoiler:
Although was surprised by him regenerating into the War Doctor instead of the 9th.

Did you see the last episode of the last series? If you did than you shouldn't be surprised about what he regenerated into. Also he didn't die, he regenerated. Still the same person. I'm glad we finally got to see his regeneration.

But yeah, it is a shame we've seen so little of McGann's doctor. I know he was in plenty of comics and audio dramas though.

Linkuya, I don't think it would be good to start with the 50th Anniversary. It follows directly from the episode before it and is going to dig into the lore of the show a lot, you would probably be a bit lost. You should start with the first episode of Series 1 since the show came back in 2005. That is "Rose" with Christopher Eccleston. Or if you want to skip ahead a bit you could start with the first episode of Series 5, "The Eleventh Hour", which is the first Matt Smith episode. Both are good starting points.

Good point and i had forgotten it could have been related to it.

As Kerr said, don't start with the 50th anniverasy episode as you will be confused. It's a major point for the show as it explores what the Doctor did during the time war(i think) and why he choose the name of the Doctor. Or start with the episode of Martha Jones's first appearance as it's unrelated to the previous series.

I'd recommend starting with 'Rose' but mainly because Billie Piper is in the 50th and I think it would help to know who she is.
So looking forward to the 50th though, have you seen the little clip of David Tennant and the bunny?

Matt Smith is my favourite Doctor. Paul McGann is my 2nd favourite. David Tennant my 3rd.
my favourite is Paul McGann of recent years though David Tenant's story arc was great

I lost interest in Matt Smith, but am looking forward to Capaldi, imo he'll be great

Tom Baker was great for his generation, a pure chaotic good character who is extremely dangerous even though the "worst" thing he would often do is offer the dalek a jelly baby

The nerve! Destroying them over and over again is one thing but offering them a jelly baby? Now, that's just pure evil!

I've enjoyed all of the 9th doctor's episode(can't spell the name) and most of Tenant's episodes. Smith, unfortuantly got a lot of [&@%!] episodes and crap story arcs. And i would even dare say that Song was turned into a Mary Sue/Dues Ex Machina. But when he did get the good ones, he really did a good job. Am hoping that Capaldi will protray a more serious doctor but will still have his light hearted moments. (Just not to the extent of Smith's doctor). Am looking forward to the Day of the Doctor and BBC 3 is showing Dr Who at the proms. It's music from the past 50 years of Doctor who.

yeah, a jelly baby offered from a paper bag.. that guy was hardcore

and why not? if you can travel time you're goin to get your sweets from a nice corner shop in the 1930's, not tescos

Capaldi will have to escape Malcolm Tucker lol but he is a good actor and just what the series needs now imo

I hate the doctor. [&@%!] offered me Jelly babies but didn't have any yellow ones! :P

Dr who does need a more serious one. Tenant was excellent and knew when to stop messing around. Smith, he tends to take it a bit too far at times. But it may just be the script that causes him to mess around. Will be interesting watching the two interact on saturday.

I thought Smith's first episode was great. He really sold those last few lines and made The Doctor seem like someone not to be trifled with.

What I don't get is how he's supposed to be this huge badass, but often gets in situations where he could very well die or lose if some maguffin did not happen in the nick of time. At least Tennant's Doctor always seemed to have a plan and was a step ahead of whoever he was facing.

i thought Matt Smith instantly looked like he was born to be the doctor and was perfect for it and had played the part for decades, but then after a season or so i drifted away from the show

whereas with other doctors i think there was an initial 'wtf' moment but over a period of time they showed me who their doctor was and i got into it more

also i have a correction to make - Christopher Eccleston is my favourite doctor, not McGann. Dunno why i mixed them up.. there's a line where he tells Rose about how he is aware of the stars and planets constantly moving around, which embodied what the doctor is about for me

I disagree with your assessment of Smith's looks, as I first thought, "Why is a potato playing The Doctor now?"

Have to say, though, Eccleston's line about being able to feel the earth moving was pretty powerful.

Yeah, the 50th was pretty good.
Spoiler:
I found the Curator "visit past faces" thing a bit questionable. It was nice to see Tom Baker but still I'm not sure how I feel about that being able to happen. I always like how there was no going back after regeneration. Then again we'll just have to see if that even goes anywhere. Might not even be the Doctor rather just some offshoot of him. And UNIT, I know shooting the Aliens never works but you could at least try it before blowing up London.

I look forward to seeing what they do with the Time Lords. In Tennant's regeneration episode they didn't do much. Although I hope he remembers just how many Time Lords are total [&@%!]. Might lead into a plot to get more regeneration. They better at least explain that if it isn't going to be the story of a series/episode. Also nice to see them follow up on Elizabeth I's appearance in that Shakespeare episode.

Oh, and Peter Capaldi. That was neat.

Overall I thought the episode was pretty good.
Spoiler:
In all honesty I liked them going into the time war a bit- it's something that's been in the background that really needed to be at least expanded on a tiny bit.
I loved the little Tom Baker bit myself, but only because -in my opinion- he's the best Doctor, though I have to admit John Hurt was great in the role. I did like the bit with all the Doctor's at the end, especially the Mcgann moment- he really was cut short.

Don't thing I do think was unneeded was The Moment's 'face' being Rose/Badwolf, I don't think it served any purpose because really John Hurt Doctor never met her so she didn't really have an impact on him as much as if it had been Smith or Tennant.

I'm ridiculously happy about the 50th. It was silly, and serious, and emotional and surprising and everything else Doctor Who should be.
Spoiler:
Tom Baker was a great surprise, Osgood was a walking personification of the fandom, which I absolutely loved, Hurt's Doctor was an amazing character and I'm sooooo happy to see BadWolf with him, and Capaldi has done the impossible - he hasn't had a single episode yet, but I cheered like crazy when he appeared. I'm not sure about Gallifrey coming back, but I think it's a great way to set the stage for a new, completely different Doctor. 13 is not going to carry the destruction of his own people on his conscience, he can have hope and I'm really looking forward to seeing him. All in all, I'm ready to forgive Moffat all his recent hiccups, because that was fantastic.

Also, the Ten vs. Rabbit scene made me laugh my head off.

Re: Doctor Who

Spoiler:
I don't think killing all the Daleks and Time Lords was the wrong thing to do in the first place. It was a horrible thing to do, but the alternative was so much worse. And it does turn out there was another better way. It is like the series finale of the first series of New Who. In that the Daleks would kill all the humans anyway, not just on earth, but everywhere. Then they would kill everything else too. Killing everyone on earth while terrible is the better option. But once again, there is a third option that is even better than the other two. It's just that doing the right thing something means doing something very bad. See the finale of Torchwood: Children of Earth.

Anyway, back to the 50th. I thought Hurt was very good in it. In my eyes he is a true Doctor. And I did notice what school Clara is teaching in now. I do agree that there was no real need to have Billie Piper in it. Anyone would have done.

I've said it before, but I'm sad we never got to see Jack with 11. Unless he is in the Christmas special. Also I just remembered, no River. Yay!

You know what would be great. I know it will never happen and would probably be impossible to keep secret. But what if when the Doctor was going to regenerate they didn't tell anyone. So you would have no idea it was going to happen or who the next doctor would be when it did. Just bam!, regeneration. Or even just having who the Doctor is going to be post regeneration secret. But as said it would be pretty much impossible to do.
Spoiler:
But admit it, that scene in the 50th would have been even more "Oh my god" if that was actually the first time who the next doctor was going to be was revealed.

I enjoyed the 50th anniverasy episode. Loved that they used both tradition special effects and CGI. Hurt was an excellent doctor and I would love to see more of him in a Time War spin off.
Spoiler:
The interactions between the Doctors was excellent and liked how that the 10th constantly got it wrong with the Zyngon. But the Bad Wolf was just forced and had no reason to exist beyond plot device. As for killing both races. It has to be done. It's either both die or everything dies but finding a better way to do it was unexpected and it doesn't break canon. If they had kept Capaldi a secret and had him appear after regenerating in the Xmas special, it would have had a lot of impact. Now, we're just expecting him.
