This is a legal disclaimer for the following statement: Any views reflected in the following does not reflect the views of the forums or any of its constituents.
The Olympics: A time for almost every country and all people to throw aside politics and war to come together and compete. Or at least that's how it should be. The Olympics today are a combination of several things: Arrogance, Springboards for global politics, Some competition, more arrogance, and last, but not least, which country is has the best intro ever because whichever one it is is definitely better than everyone else, as are the ethnic groups that live there.
Today we use the Olympics as a way to globally express our opinions on what other countries are doing wrong. It doesn't matter if China is holding Tibet, WE CAME HERE TO COMPETE SO STOP WHINING ABOUT WHAT CHINA IS DOING WRONG!! THIS IS THEIR TIME TO SHINE AND ANYONE THAT TRIES TO SCREW THEM OVER WILL BE PUBLIC ENEMY NUMBER 1!!! It is my firm belief that America should have gone to the Munich Olympics because, as previously stated, The Olympics are a time to throw away politics. Unfortunately, not many people understand that. If they understood where the Olympics came from, they just might know that what they are doing goes against one of the oldest mandates in Olympics history. Back when Greece pretty much owned half of the known world (IE Greece), the city-states of Athens and Sparta and any other city-state there would have many many wars to gain whatever they wanted, but when the Olympics rolled around, EVERYONE set aside their petty squabbles and got together to jeer at the competitors that weren't representing them. It is my belief that that is exactly what we should do today: When an Olympics rolls around, we halt all wars and animosity for the 2 or 3 weeks that the games consist of and gather together to celebrate what makes us the same (Thank you, Morgan Freeman).
As a final statement I would like to reiterate everything I've just said, especially that one sentence, you know the one I'm talking about. The Olympics are a time for us to emphasize peace and armistice in the world, a time for us to set aside petty squabbles and nuclear wars to come together and compete. It is a time for celebration, a joyous occasion, not to remind us of everything that makes us different, not to expose or exemplify those mistakes that we, as a race, have made, but instead it is a time for us to be together, to understand one another. It is a time for us to focus on and rejoice for everything that makes us the same.
The previous statement did not reflect the views of the UESP Forums or any of its affiliates or constituents in the United States or any other country. We thank you for taking the time to read what this visionary has to say and for not arguing with a word that is displayed here today.

(Also, if you're wondering why the swimmers are setting so many records, it's because the pool is a special design to optimize the swimmers abilities)

I thought the exact thing. The pools are the same. Following this, the track runner's shoes are cutomized for enhanced performance so every event evens out.

Actually, according to yahoo, there is one small thing that gives them a small advantage.
Beneath the diving board is water jets, the water that gets shot out helps the divers see the surface and the bottom of the pool.
It's very small, doesn't really even help.

Sorry about always going on about Shawn Johnson, but it seems she wants to do 2012 olympics as well. So that is exciting for Iowa at least, don't know about the rest of the country.
As well, the pool optimizing the swimmers ability, no, I don't think so, but the suit itself does. That I do know, probably very obvious though.

There're enough differences between American Football and Rugby that they wouldn't really fit in a small post, so you'd be better off looking it up on Wikipedia.
As for handball, check out Wikipedia.org's article.

GAH! The way it was worded made me think you were asking two seperate questions, a simple "and" before the what's the difference would have made it clearer to me... I'm a pedant...The King wrote:No, I meant how is handball different from rugby and football. The wikipedia article fixed that though.

Ok, well despite my... opinion of the host nation, the past 3 days I haven't been able to choose what I watch. So, Olympics it is.
And putting my feelings aside it was pretty easy to get caught up in the excitement anyway.
Football, I thought the women's semi-final between Brazil and Germany was one of the best matches I've ever seen, extremely intense, but the final was, compared to that match, a complete let-down. 1 goal, and not even to the team I wanted to win.
Although, the last 10 minutes were exciting, lots of close shots from Brazil, but no equalizer.
Athletics, the Hurdles were awesome, even if the winner was a shoe-in. I think, putting national pride aside for a minute, we all knew that the Cuban would win. The men's 400 metres was much the same, but at least there was some race between LaShawn and that other guy... the one who came second. Plus the US got third in that race too... wow.
But, while the US showcked me there, their relays were appalling. I thought after the first baton drop: 'Oh, that's ok, a simple mistake. There's still the women's relay anyway.'. But then, the exact same thing happened. And afterwards, as the Irish athletics analysts (sounds so technical
) talked it over, they came to the conclusion that the US made a mistake first time around, but the women apparently (don't shoot the messanger) can't hand each other a stick. Or at least one of them can't put their hand out in the correct way. Women's Javelin was really good, I thought the Russian had it only to have it stolen on the very throw before her last. And finally, for athletics, YAY!, we have someone in the 5000m finals.
Cragg for the win.
Show jumping, what can I say? Gutted, utterly distraight, shattered, or maybe all of the above. A banned substance found in the horse's system 4 hours before the final. And none of that "Oh, but he says he's been using it all along,", if that was the case it'd have shown up in earlier tests. I think it's a lie, and a feeble one at that. And to make it even worse, it's exactly the same as last time. Or almost, at least there's no glee to be taken this time.
Diving, didn't see much, only the final few dives. But they were all I needed to see to know that China definitely deserved gold.
Basketball, I only seen the China Vs. Lithuania match, but what a match.
Was really good up until the end of the end of the second half. Then I actually got bored of Lithuania's scoring. And did you see that height of that Chinese guy?
7 foot 6, so much for the stereotype of small Chinese people.
I didn't really see much of anything else. Snippets of the triple jump and smaller events. Like Wrestling and women's hammer throw. But not enough to comment on it.

GO POLAND!!! I've only been watching events with Poland in them. They've won a gold in Men's Quadrupile Rowing, and a few other events.
