I took a look at another similar topic, but since it was a necro (and I figured it would be probably be best if I ignored it because it is one), I figured I'd make a topic since I haven't really seen any similar ones.
Anyways! I found about the Elder Scroll series awhile back, a few years ago I think (whoa does time fly) and I've loved it sense. I've played Oblivion and Skyrim, both of which I've enjoyed a lot, and I recently got Morrowind (which, while a bit hard for me at first, is getting a bit easier!), which I've also been enjoying a lot.
Needless to say, I'm curious about the older titles in the series. I know the games will be fairly basic (they where made when I was born basically, ahaha - my first game system was more or less a Super Nintendo though, so it's not like the graphics are super alien to me, and I doubt they'd bother me much... plus with a lot of the npcs, I actually find them rather pretty to be honest, from what I've seen on uesp), and a lot of the games is randomly generated. But what else should I expect? Also, is there a difficulty setting on the game at all?
I'm mostly curious about this since I've been looking at older RPGs (Baldur's Gate, for example - not as old, but not exactly new either). Normally I'd probably saw "screw it" and just download the free version Bethesda offers, but I actually have dialup, so it'd... take a long time to download LOL, even if it is apparently a pretty small file.
So... about Arena. Should I try it?

It's worth a look at, although it is much harder than the later games. A warrior is easiest but the least powerful endgame, a thief is harder but stronger, and a mage is damn near impossible at the start but worth it in the end - magic is incredibly powerful, and unlike the later games where anyone can use it, only certain classes can. Same with armour and weapons, they're restricted by your class. Unlike in Morrowind and Oblivion where class, gender and race choice aren't really an issue, they do matter for Arena.
Difficulty is like playing Skyrim on Legendary. Only harder.

I voted yes. I'm just starting to get into it myself. It takes a bit of getting used to, but it's enjoyable. I'm finding it fun playing the older games and seeing how a lot of the features the series is known for first came about.

Yes, it's my second favourite in the series for a reason! Don't be afraid to experiment with classes, because they're each unique in their own ways and not quite as free-form as in the later titles. And for the love of god; roleplay. There's so much flavour text and atmosphere that you'll be missing out on most of the game if you try to power through.

I chose option 3. It's really dated and frustratingly hard. This game is for hardcore ES and RPG fans only these days, IMO. Still a solid game, but showing its age.
Monsters are bred in labyrinths, labyrinths are bred from walls. There is a reason the Giants choose to remain nomadic rather than follow their shield kin the Nords in building permanent settlements. The Tower is the beginning of all walls.
