Re: Pokemon!
Can these new Pokemon games be played on the 2DS? It's a cheaper system it looks like, and if I can get one used for an even bigger price reduction, I might consider it. As it stands however, it just isn't quite cost effective enough for me to even consider getting it. Also, is this supposed to be the last Pokemon game on this generation of Nintendo handhelds? I don't really keep up with Nintendo, but I know the DS and 3DS have been around for a while, and the Black and White versions came out on the 3DS right? So is there a new system in the works that the next game will be on, or is jumping aboard now going to take me far enough into the future of Pokemon games so I wouldn't need to worry about a new system releasing next year with the new games?

Re: Pokemon!
Black and White were actually for the DS, I'm sure if nothing else we'll get a Pokemon Z for the 3DS.

Re: Pokemon!
Is the DS not a compatible system with the 3DS? I sort of thought it was like the various models of Xbox 360. Just new versions that optimize features or whatever. I guess that's not the case here though. Don't want to derail this into a Nintendo system discussion so I'll look into that on my own time.
But tell me guys. As someone who hasn't played since Sapphire, which was Gen 3 I think, is this accessible? I never went hardcore into the games, I played with teams that I liked because I thought the Pokemon were cool, never really played well with their strengths. I haven't really kept up with all the 18 million new Pokemon that there are now, and I will always like the first couple of generations the best (even playing Sapphire I wasn't really a fan of some of the new additions then) and I understand that you get to experience the older generations in this game which is pretty sweet. So if I were to hypothetically get one of these games, would an old man like me be able to hop in no problem?

Re: Pokemon!
Speaking as an even older man, yes. The learning curve is actually quite nice without being patronizing, and a lot of the stuff you'd have missed(new Pokemon and such) isn't really necessary to know about in order to do well. There are people who'd want to tell you about abilities and natures and EV training, but, honestly, picking a team you think is cool and going with that is still as viable a strategy as it was in Gen I.
Don't mistake lack of talent for genius.

Yeah, I've never been into the whole hidden stats thing. That would just take the fun out of it for me. I just choose the Pokemon and moves I like.

Re: Pokemon!
It really hasn't changed in difficulty level. Train your pokemon well before each gym so you are on level or above level of the leader, vary your team, and you will have no issues.
Get into competitive play with other people though...whole new story. I've never got into it myself, I just know that is a lot harder.

Re: Pokemon!
Competitive Pokemon is crazy. Moves that are useless in-game like Stealth Rock, Spikes, and other entry hazards are staples when playing competitively, and practically every Pokemon's usefulness takes those entry hazards into account when analyzing the strength of a Pokemon, because a Pokemon's ability to switch in can be greatly hindered by them. Not to mention that trainers switching Pokemon is a *way* bigger mechanic than it is in-game, for type advantages and other strategies. Thus the reason entry hazards are there, to discourage one from switching out too much, especially Fire-types that take more damage from Rock-type moves.. I enjoy competitive battling, but I much prefer training my own Pokemon that I want to use, not what would necessarily be the best on my team.born2beagator wrote:Get into competitive play with other people though...whole new story. More economical. and the downside is the mono speaker and the lack of 3D, I don't mind.
You can alwayss use headphones for stereo.

Re: Pokemon!
To be honest the 3D effects in this particular game aren't that spectacular, compared to Kid Icarus Uprising and Legend of Zelda OoT.

Please don't buy the 2DS, seriously. The screens are miniscule when compared to the XL and just for that reason alone you should buy the XL. It was made for little kids who tend to drop their console and break the hinges, hence the reason why you can't fold it.scribbane wrote:Good looking out General. Re: Pokemon!
I'd say the 3D effect is pretty bad. Heck, it's even disabled outside of battles. I don't think I've played a retail 3DS game that doesn't support the 3D for the majority of the game. That being said, I don't really use the 3D anyway on the game.Alarra wrote:To be honest the 3D effects in this particular game aren't that spectacular, compared to Kid Icarus Uprising and Legend of Zelda OoT.

Re: Pokemon!
Even in battle, it's not really all that visible - mainly the menus just look a little more layered, and you can see it more in some moves (like Water Pulse). I was a little bit disappointed about that. The game is pretty cool overall though, 3D aside.

I have around 6 badges now, and I have my dream outfit in mind. However, that outfit cost half a million poke. It's going to be a while. .__.

Re: Pokemon!
It's a handheld console. I don't expect large screens and I haven't had a handheld since GBA, so anything newer is going to be an upgrade. Despite the handheld nature, I wouldn't plan on taking the system all over the place, and it would probably stay by my bed so I could play at night. Its a cheaper system, and for someone like me, that is the biggest draw. If there is some other detriment to the 2DS I'd be glad to hear it, but this sounds like the system I'd buy, if I determine that I actually want to invest.Frost Mage wrote:Please don't buy the 2DS, seriously. More Pokémon related questions though: are you able to have multiple save files in the game? Also, are gen 1 Pokémon split between the two games, or is it just the new ones that you need access to both X and Y in order to obtain? Basically, if I get X, can I catch the original 151 without trading?

I would love to see answers to these questions.
Although,I'd appreciate if someone could inform me on worthy pokemon after number 250..
Not lke your favorites, or "underrated"...but rather, "legendary" and general consensus top power pokemon..(Lame question, and i could just "look it up" but i'm lazy and want to make conversation)

If you want top power Pokemon, you're looking at OU (Overused) Pokemon, which are powerful for different reasons such as stat distributions and movesets in competitive play. Not to sound condescending to a person who hasn't played any of the games for the past 10 years, (you said 250 so I'm guessing you stopped at Gen 2) but to explain to you "powerful Pokemon" is a super big and ever-changing concept that is vastly up to opinion. There are hundreds of worthy Pokemon, but to
In answer to scrib's question, no, just one save file, and to be honest I like it that way, keeps people from going too crazy. To the other question, it's hard to say because they didn't group all of the Pokemon into huge generational chunks, especially since the Bulbapedia has virtually no official information since the games have only been out for less than a week.
But no matter what you do, for the love of god, don't be a [&@%!] Genwunner.

Re: Pokemon!
This page has a list of what pokemon are version-exclusive.
Now, if you haven't played Pokemon for a couple gens, one thing you should know is that you don't have to have to know someone in person who has the game anymore in order to trade. You can do wi-fi trades if you have someone's friend code, and there's even an online global trading system.
