Your parents can give you alcohol under their supervision in their home, if they want to.

Back in the old days, everyone drank beer and the like. It was the best most entertaining means to purify the drinking water.

Tom, if it was Sam Adams (since you are in Boston) I feel for you. It's one of my favorite beers so I feel for you.

Re: The General Discussion Thread
My parents never kept alcohol in the house because they figured (correctly) that I'd get at it if they did. So they used to get it when we went out for meals as a learning experience, and now I like to think I understand the concept of moderation.
I guess I find it weird that, in general, guns have a less questionable legal status than beer does. Though I suppose it depends on the state, like Alarra says.
Anyway enough soapboxing. I'm just jealous because I like shooting guns as much as the next man and we only have about three between all sixty million of us back home.

I believe the honest answer would be that our temperance movement was just much better at its job. From a brief search, I can see the UK had one, but they never managed to introduce a total ban.The Tom wrote:What's the deal with the total ban on alcohol for under 21s in this country?\

That actually has nothing to do with it at all, if you are being serious.

While we do have 21 years as the legal age to buy alcohol, I assure you, teenagers can throw a kegger like there is no tomorrow.

Huh. I should have been Sarah Palin for Halloween. I always was a maverick.
Anyway. This is a bad day in Avron land for sports. At least the Buccos have an elimination game, but Atlanta, come on...you were supposed to cream New York. I should have picked the Rams like my gut first told me. No one beats the damn Jaguars.
Argh, betting. Bad, bad business.

Re: The General Discussion Thread
Thanks for sharing! Since you clearly knew the answer, and I implied I wasn't sure what it was, this would of been a great time for you to show off your expertise besides just dismissing my post as incorrect. You see, that's how an intelligent conversation between people go. One person can ask a question, and the others answer to the best of their ability.Br3admax wrote:That actually has nothing to do with it at all, if you are being serious.
Since you didn't bother to answer the question, despite knowing the answer clearly, I looked it up. It's due to the National Minimum Drinking Age Act. This made the states set the law to the age for people to purchase or possess alcohol in public (many states still allow youths to drink it at an earlier age under other circumstances). If they did not comply, they got their highway budget cut.
By the way, you are still wrong about me claiming the temperance movement had nothing to do with it all. They were responsible for the national banning of access to alcohol in the country, with the rest coming down the line from that. Therefore, it is related, even if it is not directly responsible.

I actually thought that that was the joke, the whole Temperance thing, so I didn't answer. Since you were actually alive during this time, I was pretty sure that you actually already knew the answer.

For the record, there is a very good reason I will ever acknowledge a handful of my family members as being related to me. I think they're despicable and caught in their simply insane (about half of them have been diagnosed as genuinely insane in one way or another) ideas.
The point being, my family is weird. What about yours?

My great grandfather secretly had two wives and two families, who didn't meet each other until much later. The daughters even had the same names. Awkward... So yeah. Weird family.

Re: The General Discussion Thread
Aw Avron, you know you're not that old.
So, we're talking ancestor stories now? Here's my most interesting one:
Back in Poland, my great-great-grandparents were having a very rough time in their marriage and not getting along. The husband decided that he was going to move to America in order to earn money and make a better life for his family (read: get away from the wife). So he moved there, and she didn't hear from him... but she did hear from friends who lived here, who told her where he was staying. So she packed up the kids (and they had quite a large family), hopped on a boat, and they all showed up at his doorstep one day.

I'm not old - I know, but it's so warm and fuzzy to look back at UESPF and think of how far everyone has come!
Families truly are so interesting. It's amazing all the stories that you can hear from everyone. I always wished I had the chance to talk more with my grandmother when she was sharper; there were always so many great stories about her parents (who I am named after, in fact!).
