Being inspired by Beta, I'd like to present how my friends draw my Kiara from Skyrim:

Its supposed to be a pine cone. Made with GIMP, that explains the fuzzy edges and lack of detail on that one.

Secret Handshake
Remember, kids, a proper Thalmor handshake should be done with a poker face; otherwise your cover will be blown!
Yes, according to my roleplay my Altmer mage is not an Apprentice at the College, but a visiting scholar; and he used to be a Thalmor at some point; they let him retire after he lost his eyesight during the Night of the Green Fire in 4E 42 (he had it partially restored about a century later), but they still keep him on a short leash. Which he detests.

Yup yup, 10 minutes! Maybe 15 tops with the going back over a few lines and shading, but you can see it's not finished, just a doodle. I usually do a super quick sketch to lay things out and then just go in full detail...so, everything my art teacher said not to ever do ever, that's me. ;)

Nothing fancy, just doodles!

Hey Avron, did you ever think about signing up for Drawception? I haven't been on it in months, not since before I got my tablet, but it's pretty fun, and it's all about speed-drawing in five to ten minutes.
Avron the S'wit wrote:so, everything my art teacher said not to ever do ever, that's me. ;)
Why would your art teacher say not to do this? Nearly everyone I've talked to says that roughing it first and then filling in details later is a good idea.

No, my art teacher was about laying out proportions. I don't do that. I just say, "I'm starting here" and get at it.

I actually lay all proportions out from the eyes, which I draw first. I have no idea why.

Ohhh right, yeah. I'm the same way! Terrible with laying out proportions and planning my space. As I shall now demonstrate:

I can't do that, everything ends up skewed when I try. I always have to lay out my guidelines first.
Short timed sketches like this are great practice, though. It's amazing what you can get done in 10 minutes after you've done a bunch of 60-second gestures.

A quickie for TES V: Skyrim.
The Soul Cairn sky is definitely bugged for me: on most saves it has no moons in it at all, on some saves it has two moons, and on Kiara's save it had one moon, as seen here. Image

And while we're at it, here's one for Norroen. Five Minute OC Chibi Kiara. (your art always reminds me of chibi!)

-edit- since Avron said she was doodling for ten minutes, I figured I'd use the extra five minutes to throw in some color.

The signature says "Kiara" in Japanese. I would have done it in Akaviri, but I don't know Akaviri...

I like making art, but I am horrible at drawing in real life. In real life I can paint abstractly though. Here is more art I made on the computer.

That's not horrible! It's definitely a good start.

One tip that really helped me out with drawing humans was about noses. A lot of people, especially when they're starting off, have a tendency to draw both sides of the nose, penciling the bridge in thickly, so it winds up looking like an elephant's trunk. It's usually a better idea to approach noses more subtly. Draw only one side of the bridge (or neither!), thickening the line and the shading depending on the angle of your face. There's a lot of subtle shading involved in nasal bridges, and it's generally best to ere on the side of caution, especially when you're working/practicing with basic monotones.

I'm sure Avron would have better advice, though.

Prolly better than me still<_< best I can do are stick figures and doodles. Granted I can make wonderful stick-figures that overshadow the norm.. but their still stick figures none the less.. As for doodles.. they can be very good pieces of work.. that take 2 weeks to do thanks to every... tiny.. dam.. detail. But alas it cannot be forced and is a rarity on my part

Yeah. Practice.

I took four years worth of art class, so I learnt a few things on top of just being naturally gifted in art (including the refined practice of baby food all over the wall). When it comes to proportions, there are quite a lot of things to remember. For instance: eyes are typically separated by a space equivalent to their shape (so as to say, from the outward corner of one eye to the other should be the length of three eyes). If you Google lots of different images and practice drawing them, you'll pretty much get an idea for different lengths and what is more right than the other. I spent a lot of time redrawing things from photos. :P

And yeah, noses are really tough. It's important to remember that noses are just shaped skin, so most of their features are captured by playing of light and shadow. Trying to give them too much edge can throw things off.

...then again, I'm just a doodler, more so than an artist, so. Practice makes perfect.
