How is TES not living and breathing? Each NPC has their own schedule.
GTA 4 was no masterpiece. Out side of the story and everything involved in it, it sucked. There is no activities to do, or anything. Once you beat the story, what do you do? You drive around with crappy mechanics and shoot people with crappy mechanics in a small map.
No activities? Clearly you never played the game. If you did, you'd remember the bowling, darts, racing, pool, odd jobs for your friends, poker, never mind all the random things your friends call you up to ask you to do. Most of the time you forget about the story with all the side activities there are for you.

Fun fact, if you had any experience with the industry, they'd tell you not to do anything like Bethesda. Unless designing buggy games with out of date technology is your idea of pioneering. Rockstar has done much for the industry in terms of design scale, technology, voice acting, graphics and animation than Bethesda will ever achieve.

Let me rephrase that: No good activities. There is a reason they are getting rid of the friend thing altogether.

Actually, unlike you, I have evidence for why RPG developers want their game to be more like Skyrim. No one says that they want to make a buggy game, but that sense of freedom and doing whatever you want has inspired the next batch of RPG's, and you will see when they release.

You act like I hate Rockstar and I say they have done nothing for the industry.( If you haven't noticed, my avatar is GTA related.) Hell, without GTA, half the games that are around wouldn't be. I'm just stating that GTA 4 was overrated compared to earlier games. The story was amazing, the atmosphere was great, it just wasn't up to par gameplay wise compared to earlier installments. I still put hundreds of hours into the game, but it was overrated. Which is why I am excited for GTA V, with excellent mechanics and more freedom.

Fun Fact: Don't insult someone if you have no idea what exactly you are talking about.
Nothing is true, everything is permitted.

As much as I like GTA, I would have to go with TES. I enjoy open world freedom (both games have that), but one thing that GTA lacks in is role-playing. One thing I hate about many "open world" games is the lack of customization, content, and the lack of peaceful interaction with random characters.

Other reasons I prefer TES over GTA is character creation, lore and background stories, the fact that it is a role-playing game, and that I prefer swords, bows, and magic over guns. Why do I hate guns in games you may ask? Number one is I can't stand aiming. Two is rifles. Hate those damn scopes (aiming again). And Three, guns are less satisfying than swords to use against enemies, because there is less excitement, just click and boom. Swords you can have a prolonged fight with just one enemy.

So this concludes my reasons of why I prefer TES over GTA, and why my favorite GTA is GTA:SA (somewhat role-playing).

And they were a bit crap. I mean, compared to GTA:SA, it had barely anything. The story was GTAIV's strong point but it was a chore to play at times. As Dika said, when Developers say they want to make their game more like Skyrim, they wish to incorporate the elements of Skyrim that have been well recieved. Also, there was no poker in GTAIV.

I hate when ppl point to bugs and say Beth is terrible and devs look at them as how not to make a game.. The bugs in my TES experience were very minimal.. After I learned how to grab the quest before I explored the area the bugs were less and less.. Jes quit with the bug excuses.. It rarely effects game play.. If anything the exploits are TES only downfall.. Not the bugs
