I like both games, but GTA just had a way bigger impact on gaming than TES ever did or will. Not to mention GTA always managed to create a living and breathing world, something TES has always failed to achieve if you put a few hours into the games (can't speak for Morrowind, but the worlds became pretty stale in Skyrim and Oblivion).

The amount of GTA IV hate in this thread is saddening. GTA IV was a masterpiece.

I would have to say that for me the TES Franchise remains a clear winner, even if we don't include Skyrim. With the Elder Scrolls IP Bethesda has set the tone for contemporary 1st-person RPGs, and captured (not just held) the attention of thousands of people. This is something fantasy has over other genres, I feel. It's a lot easier to truly get lost in a fantastical make-believe world than it is to get lost in a representation of a part of our own.

In other news though, I'm saddened that Total War lost out to Tomb Raider in Round 1.

I never understood this line of argument. I quite enjoyed Dragon Age II, although I don't deny Origins was by far its superior.

Someone who clearly doesn't get that flaming the same game over and over again gets you nowhere.

I wouldn't pay him any mind, Duruza; he's pretty much the only one here that hates a game on no real merits.

I feel the influence the series has had on other major roleplaying fantasies of the same vein, such as The Witcher and Dragon Age franchises (while not strictly necessarily 1st-person orientated games) is the beginning of what will be a further development of the genre. Certainly, I feel that Bethesda's success with TES opened the door for the evolution of the Fallout franchise away from its isometric roots, for example, and influenced franchises like the Gothic, and lesser known games like Divinity II.

Still, my comment may have perhaps overreached a little.

How is it a Nostalgia issue?
I enjoyed certain games more than others. why is it the only reason for that is always Nostalgia? I did play Morrowind before I played Oblivion, you know.

If you talk to any RPG developer right now, they will tell you they want to make their game more like Skyrim.
How is TES not living and breathing? Each NPC has their own schedule.
GTA 4 was no masterpiece. Out side of the story and everything involved in it, it sucked. There is no activities to do, or anything. Once you beat the story, what do you do? You drive around with crappy mechanics and shoot people with crappy mechanics in a small map.
Nothing is true, everything is permitted.

At time of writing, ES has a 2.5 percent lead with less then 10 minutes remaining to vote. Let's see how it goes.

Can't say I agree with that decision, but whatever, apparently it's the will of the masses. :|

Good for TES, I suppose...

For me, TES is not the greatest game series of the decade due to the quailty of the plots and the gameplay but it is the greatest open world RPG series of the decade as it does what an open world RPG should do. Gives you a lot of freedom, excellent atmoshpheres and soundtracks and plenty to do. Am a bit surprised GTA didn't win considering GTA5 is out next week.

The whole premise of the "Of The Decade" is to compare the games in the series that have come out in the past ten years. That would mean 2002 - 2012 (or Mid 2003 - Mid 2013). GTA 5 coming out next week does nothing for the games released in the past decade. ;)

Tell that to the fanbase as new releases can cause them to vote for that franchise. ;)

I'm happy TES won.. How many of you play Morrowind to this day? Now how many of you play vice city to this day.. Go to your nearest game store and vice city is on sale for 15$ but you have to get Morrowind online so are going for a cool 100$.. Pretty soon oblivion will be like that.. San Andreas was awesome but it will never be a collector.. Sry my opinion, but the gta games are simply copy and paste so the best game won... Once again my opinion

Or get Morrowind for less then $20 on steam or Amazon. I think it's literally a fiver on the UK amazon. Not 100% sure.

As Bread said, GTA has a massive fanbase. It's also well known and TES only became known to those that haven't played or heard TES in the last few years due to Skyrim and it's huge marketing budget. Whereas GTA tends to get a lot of marketing and is at the point where Rockstar can literally do very little marketing and still sell millions of copies.

Yeah, I wonder how many players there would be if they had the budget to market more back then. I was surprised at the amount of people on here who joined because of Skyrim being their first ES game.
