Okay, so I was trying to do the Dawnguard side of the Dawnguard main quest with my last character, but as usual got a bit out of control with my skill levelling, wasting perks etc. and basically gave up on it. I'm now planning to try again, but this time choosing my skills entirely around getting the most out of being a member of the Dawnguard.
However, the Dawnguard have quite a lot to offer with special armour, shields, crossbows and restoration magic. So I'm wondering if anyone's tried to mix all of these?
The skills you would need to do this are Archery, Block, Heavy Armour, One Handed, Restoration and Smithing. The easiest place to save is by not taking too much in Heavy Armour, in fact I could probably get away with only take the 5 basic perks as too many of the others expect a matching set of armour (which I don't usually wear as I hate most of the helmet choices), I only really need the heavy armour side of Smithing, though it's a shame to lose Advanced Armours thanks to the stupid position it occupies on the tree. My character probably doesn't need to progress too far in Archery, Block or Restoration, just enough to be competent, although even with these compromises this still works out at around 40 perks.
Has anyone else tried building such a character, and if so, how did you do it? I'm still stuck on the 360 version of the game so let's just stick to builds that only use the vanilla game (no mods).
Best Palladin/Vampire Hunter Type Build?
Re: Best Palladin/Vampire Hunter Type Build?
To be honest, for smithing you could just take Dwarvern and then progress up the light side to Advanced smithing. Then you can improve your Enhanced Dwarvern Crossbow and DG faction armour, as well as improving a DG rune axe too which is quite a nice thematic weapon if you didn't want Arcane Blacksmithing for Dawnbreaker.
For restoration, if you want to use it more offensively as I'd imagine you would you probably only really need Necromage taking just three perks. After that point it's hard to say what you'd need; if you're using alchemy plus enchanting for your gear you obviously won't need as much investment in heavy armor so it really becomes a matter of personal taste. I would say that DG armour offers more benefits with a helmet and the helmet looks pretty cool, so if you did decide to take it that would also factor in.
Personally, if I were to make this build, I'd go for a tank build along the lines of this: http://skyrimcalculator.com/322108 - which is quite easy to drop perks from (particularly in archery and one-handed) if you aren't so obsessed with doing damage as I am - also using the atronach stone with fortify block, restoration, health and resist magic enchantments on your equipment with fortify archery and one-handed enchantments where you can squeeze them in.
